The serum concentration of zinc, copper, manganese and lead in 30 manic patients and 30 human volunteers were determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. It was observed that the concentration of zinc in manic patients increased significantly (P < 0.05), where as the concentrations of copper, manganese and lead were found to be within the limit (P > 0.05). These concentrations of different trace elements may have some prognostic significance for the diagnosis of manic patients, but more work is suggested to find out the exact correlation between trace elements level & the degree of disorder in manic patients. The serum concentration of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), calcium (Ca) and iron (Fe) in 30 schizophrenic patients and 30 normal healthy subjects were analyzed by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. The concentrations of Cd, Pb and Ca in schizophrenic disorder patients was not increased significantly (P > 0.05) compared to that of the cohort controls. But the concentration of Fe in schizophrenic patients was significantly different from that of the cohort control (p < 0.000). The change in serum concentration of different trace elements may have some prognostic significance for the diagnosis of schizophrenic disorder. However further work is suggested to examine the exact correlation between trace elements level and the degree of disorder in schizophrenic patients. Acne vulgaris is a chronic skin disease with multifaceted cause. The exact etiology and pathogenesis of acne are yet to be established completely and various causative factors are considered as pathogenic mechanisms in the development of this disorder. We designed a study to determine the extent of serum trace elements, macrominerals and antioxidants in patients with acne, and thereby, to find the pathophysiological correlations, if any. Serum trace elements and macro-minerals were determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. RP-HPLC was used to quantify antioxidants. Significantly (p<0.05) decreased level of zinc (1.90±0.06 vs. 2.17±0.09 mg/L), calcium (115.64±4.84 vs. 197.05±7.11 mg/L) and vitamin A (0.2±0.06 vs. 0.86±0.26 ?mol/L) was found in patient when compared with the corresponding controls. This investigation suggests a commendable association between the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris with the reduced level of zinc, calcium and vitamin A which could well be used as a diagnostic tool for acne vulgaris.Dhaka Univ. AbstractObjectivesTrace elements are essential in thyroid functioning as they incorporate into biologically important enzymes as cofactors. The placenta can either activate or inhibit the transfer of maternal trace elements to the unborn. An imbalance of maternal trace elements in pregnancy may affect both maternal and newborn thyroid function.MethodsBlood samples from 315 lactating mothers were collected in the first 48 h after delivery and evaluated for selenium (Se), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS) and quadrupole inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Thyroid hormones and auto-antibodies (thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free T3 (fT3), free T3 (fT4), anti–thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO), and antithyroglobulin (anti-TG)) were analyzed in maternal blood using an electro-chemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA). Between 48 and 72 postpartum hours, spot blood samples were used for newborn screening-TSH measurement. Correlation and multivariate analyses were performed to evaluate the effect of maternal trace element levels on newborn screening-TSH levels.ResultsThe medians (min-max) of maternal Se (45.16 µg/L (21.28–79.04)), Cu (210.10 µg/dL (117.04–390.64)), Mn (2.11 µg/L (0.20–3.46)), and Zn (0.43 mg/L (0.24–0.66)) were determined. A positive correlation was detected between Zn and maternal TSH levels (r=0.12, p < 0.05). Newborn screening-TSH was significantly correlated with maternal Cu (r=0.14, p < 0.01). Similarly, Cu exhibited weak associations in clustering analysis while others shared common clusters with newborn-screening TSH.ConclusionsThere was no significant association between most of the maternal serum trace elements and maternal thyroid hormone parameters, with an only exception between maternal Zn and maternal serum TSH. Finally, the association between maternal serum Cu levels and newborn screening-TSH levels may highlight the importance of maternal Cu levels on the newborn thyroid health.

Backgrounds: Variations of trace element contents may be associated with several diseases including metabolic disorders, cellular growth disturbance, mutation and tumorigenesis. Prostate cancer is the second most common male cancer worldwide and stand fifth most common male cancer in Saudi Arabia. Objective: In the present study, Serum levels of selenium, zinc, copper, manganese, and iron were measured in patients with BPH and prostate cancer aiming to explore the association between these elements and prostate cancer. Patients and Methods: The study included 40 newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients, 22 patients with BPH and 30 healthy male subjects. All participant groups had similar socio-economic levels. Fasting blood samples were collected from all subjects and before any intervention for the patients. Serum PSA concentrations were analyzed by ELIZA and trace elements Se, Zn, Cu, Mn and Fe were measured by ICP-MS. Results: Serum Se, Zn, and Mn levels of prostate cancer patients were significantly decreased compared to control groups. The levels of serum Cu and Fe were significantly higher in prostate cancer patients than in control groups. Conclusion: In the present study, an association was noticed between serum trace elements disturbance and prostate cancer. The decreased levels of Se, Zn, and Mn, and increased Cu and Fe levels may play significant roles in the initiation of prostate cancer. However, future prospective studies on the causes of trace elements alteration in prostate cancer patients are needed as well as to illustrate the relation between different prostate cancer stages and trace elements concentrations.

AIM: The purpose of the study was to determine the levels of Copper (Cu), selenium (Se), Zinc (Zn), Lead (Pb) and Lithium (Li) in patients in Accra and Pantang Psychiatric Hospitals in Ghana since no data exist.SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Simple random sampling of age-matched subjects was used to recruit 81 schizophrenics and 25 mentally healthy controls in 2012. Serum levels of Cu, Se, Zn, Pb and Li were determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS). RESULTS: Mean levels were as follows: Cut 766 ± 250 µg/L and Cuc 855 ± 270 µg/L (p = 0.168). Set 149 ± 72 µg/L and Sec 108 ± 61 µg/L (p=0.009). Znt 702 ± 438 µg/L and Znc 1007 ± 593 µg/L (p = 0.028). Pbt 1.38 ± 0.05 µg/L and Pbc 0.10 ± 0.05 µg/L (p = 0.000). Li levels for the test group (Lit) was 4077 ± 2567 µg/L, whiles that of the controls was undetectable < 0.02 µg/L. Se, Pb and Li levels were significantly higher in schizophrenic patients compared to controls. While Zn and Cu levels were lower in the same group.CONCLUSION: Trace elements dysmetabolism exist among Ghanaian schizophrenics and monitoring is essential to avoid the adverse effects of metal overload or deficiency.

Trace elements play a significant role in giving nutritional benefits to the body because they act as essential cofactors for all physiological processes. However, there are some trace elements which may bring more harm than good when entering the human body. Due to its ability to incorporate trace elements in an amount that is proportional to an individual’s dietary intake and environmental exposure, human fingernails are suitable biomarkers in assessing the health status of an individual as they reflect on the trace element concentration present in the body. This study has analysed fingernail samples of 23 adult females residing in Kuching and Kota Samarahan, Sarawak, Malaysia for four elements, namely Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. By using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS), the mean elemental concentrations found in fingernail samples of research participants were 171.8 ± 33.8 μg/g for Zn, 27.8 ± 14.8 μg/g for Cu and 2.64 ± 0.94 μg/g for Pb. Cd concentrations were not able to be detected as they were below the detection limits. A standard reference material, NIST 1568b Rice Flour was used to verify the methods used in elemental analysis using FAAS. Independent t-test which was used to compare the means of Zn and Cu between vegetarians and non-vegetarians showed no significant differences for both elements. Moreover, correlation analysis showed negative correlations between Cu/Zn pair and Pb/Zn pair, whereas significant positive correlation was obtained for Cu/Pb pair. The overall data from this study showed good agreements with data obtained from studies in other countries. Therefore, the current data in this study represents the latest background elemental concentrations in fingernails of the residents in Kuching and Kota Samarahan, Sarawak.Keywords: Adult females, fingernails, flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS), trace elements

Abstract The direct introduction of slurries in flow Injection-flame atomic absorption spectroscopy has been studied using a single-channel manifold. The influence of flow Injection parameters on the sensitivity and accuracy of this procedure has been established. A method has been developed for the determination of copper, manganese, and lead In sewage sludge where batch digestion of the samples In a microwave oven is carried out before dilution. Both sensitivity and limit of detection of the flow Injection analysis procedure are adequate for the analysis of actual samples (the limit of detection was 0.06, 0.05, and 0.3 ppm for copper, manganese, and lead, respectively). The accuracy of the proposed method, determined from the analysis of 2 reference samples from the European Community Bureau, is better than that obtained by the continuous aspiration of the samples.
