Hydatid disease, caused by Echinococcus granulosus is still endemic in certain parts of world but not a common disease in our country. Hydatid cysts mainly involve the liver and lungs but any other organ can potentially be involved. Renal hydatid cyst is uncommon and represents 2-4% of hydatid cyst in human. We report a case of isolated hydatid cyst of right kidney in our surgical care. A 36 years old lady was admitted under our care with gradually increasing lump and mild pain in right lumbar region for 6 months. Ultrasonography revealed a diagnosis of hydatid cyst. IVU showed smooth filling defect in right kidney which displaced pelvicaliceal system. Serological tests were not done due to unavailability. The patient was operated on and endocystectomy, deroofing and marsupialization were done. Hydatid cyst was confirmed by histopathological examination. Albendazole was started 2 weeks before operation and continued postoperatively for 1 month. The patient was discharged on 8th postoperative day and was closely followed up for 3 years without any further development of hydatid cyst in any organ.Faridpur Med. Coll. J. Jan 2015;10(1): 40-43

Hepatic hydatid cysts are benign cysts in the liver that are the result of parasites infection. They are caused by echinoccocus granulosis or multilocularis. They caused several symptoms like pain, obstructive jaundice, and sepsis. Hydatid cyst can be complicated to cystobiliary communication (CBC) which can be frank CBC or occult CBC. Medical, endoscopic, percutaneous and surgical treatments are different approaches to treat hydatid cyst. Here we report a case of hepatic hydatid cyst with cystobiliary communication, causing obstructive jaundice and treated with sphincterotomy and insertion of biliary stent through endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).

ABSTRACTHuman coenurosis is a rare zoonotic disease caused by the larvae of Tinea multiceps seen in sheep-rearing countries. We report the case of a 63-year-old male who was referred to our hospital with a working diagnosis of skull base chondrosarcoma. Histopathological examination after surgical excision revealed characteristic feature of coenurus with multiple scolices invaginating from the outer cuticular layer. Coenuri are often mistaken for giant cysticercal cysts and hydatid cysts. Despite its wide prevalence in cattle, only two cases of human coenurosis are reported from India till date. We report the third case from India.

Hydatid cyst is a very significant health problem in India. As recorded in the literature, majority of hydatid cysts are found in the liver followed by the lungs with an incidence rate of 60-70% and 10-15% respectively. Cystic hydatid disease in bones is seen in less than 4% of cases, with majority presenting in the spine. In this case report we have discussed primary intraspinal extradural hydatid cyst with paravertebral extension (dumbbell shaped) in lumbar vertebra which is a rarity. The diagnosis was established intraoperatively based on the findings with a follow up and review of literatures, along with its management.

We present a case report that demonstrates diagnostic and intraoperative challenges in the laparoscopic management of initially unrecognized splenic hydatid disease. A male patient, aged 44, was admitted to our department with a big unilocular splenic cyst, radiologically (ultrasonography, computed tomography) characterized as a simple cyst. Serological tests for anti-Echonococcus antibody were negative, and chests X-ray findings were unremarkable, so laparoscopic cyst fenestration with omentoplasty was planned. The intraoperative finding did not correspond to a simple splenic cyst. Hydatid daughter cysts were recognized after the careful opening of the cyst wall. The operation was completed without shifting to open procedures. Laparoscopic partial pericystectomy with omentoplasty is a safe and effective surgical procedure for the management of splenic hydatid disease.

Isolated hydatid cysts of the pancreas are rare lesions, even in endemic regions. In this report, we present the case of a 76-year-old patient who was admitted to our clinic with a diagnosis of a cystic lesion in the tail of the pancreas. On preoperative computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) examination, the cyst was characterized as a mucinous cystadenoma. A laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy followed. A histopathological examination revealed a large hydatid cyst in the tail of the pancreas.

A 14-year-old boy presented with painless gross hematuria after a blunt trauma to his right lumbar region. Abdominal ultrasonography and abdominal computerized tomography revealed that the right kidney was hydronephrotic; contrast material delineated a hematoma inside the kidney. The patient underwent a right simple nephrectomy and after histopathological examination was found to have a renomedullary interstitial cell tumor of the right kidney. This tumor is common in patients older than 50 years, whereas our patient was very young. The diagnosis of this small tumor is not possible by conventional radiological techniques and histopathological examination is mandatory for its diagnosis.

A tailgut cyst is a rare developmental lesion and usually is located in the retrorectal or presacral space. Extrahepatic hydatid disease has been reported in several locations including the pelvis and it often poses a diagnostic challenge. There are very few reported cases of primary perineal hydatid cysts. We present the multimodality imaging findings of a tailgut cyst and concurrent perineal hydatid disease in a 32-year-old male patient.

Objective: To report an unusual case of orbital hydatid cyst successfully managed by surgical excision.Case report: A 33-year-old female presented with gradual protrusion of the left eye associated with poor vision, cosmetic embarrassment and watering. She had excision biopsy of an encapsulated cystic lesion with cheesy tissue and serous content. Orbital hydatid cyst due to echinococcosis was confirmed at histopathological examination of the excised tissue. She subsequently became pregnant hence, could not undergo post-operative antihelminthic treatment, but was managed conservatively with no recurrence after five years of regular follow-up.Conclusion: Orbital hydatid cyst should be considered as a differential in a young patient presenting with unilateral proptosisFunding: NoneKeywords: Echinococcosis, Hydatid cyst, Orbit, Nigerian, Proptosis

The hydatid cyst is a parasitic pathology which is endemic in Tunisia and presents a public health problem. Hydatid cysts located in the retroperitoneum, especially around or in the kidney, are rare and only represent 5% of visceral locations. The kidney is the most commonly affected organ of the urinary tract. The psoas muscle is an uncommon location and not less than 70 cases have been cited. We report the case of an unusual presentation of a right kidney hydatid cyst associated with a psoas muscle location. To our knowledge, this association of double retroperitoneal location has not been reported in the literature.

Hydatidosis is a public health problem in endemic countries. Hydatid cysts are located usually in the liver and the lungs. Primary pancreatic hydatid cyst is in unusual location and rarely causes acute pancreatitis. In this paper, we report a case of a 34-year-old man who admitted with recurrent acute pancreatitis. Following the preoperation investigations, the primary impression was a pancreatic pseudocyst. During surgery, a primary hydatid cyst was detected in the pancreas measuring 35 × 20 × 15 cm. The treatment consisted of evacuation and external draining of the cyst. In addition, we summarized 14 cases of primary hydatid cyst of the pancreas associated with acute pancreatitis reported in the literature.
