AbstractThe detachment and abandonment of Latin American historic cities appear as a recurrent problem, despite the multiple regeneration projects that have been implemented in recent decades. In this context, we analyze the incidence of this type of project on the sense of belonging and appropriation of four public spaces: three plazas and one park, located in the Historic Center of Cuenca in Ecuador. The objective is to identify and study the relationship between the physical-spatial and usage characteristics with the user and his perception, in order to correct and enhance future interventions. A methodology with a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach is used, through the development of tools that allow analyzing the sense of belonging and appropriation of the users after the regeneration projects. It is found that both, the plazas and the park studied, are mostly used for transit and their users do not feel identified with them, mainly due to the lack of daily activities that neighborhood life, a situation linked to the loss of housing and diversity of uses. Finally, we conclude with a series of recommendations that seek to foster a sense of belonging and appropriation in public spaces in heritage areas. Keywords: Attachment, urban life, patrimonialization.

The aim of this paper is to study how women’s privacy needs are met through the physical form of public spaces in both old and new urban designs, using as a case study the city of Nablus, Palestine, which has been significantly influenced by the culture of gender separation. The findings will help develop a better understanding of the relationship between women’s privacy and the physical form of public spaces and will enhance the development of public spaces that women can use comfortably and actively to participate in the urban life. An environmental approach based on the concept of behavioural setting was used to examine women’s privacy issues in the chosen public spaces. Direct observations and questionnaires were used in the fieldwork, in addition to interviews with women and relevant people who influence the women’s privacy. Maps (GIS), sketches and SPSS techniques were used to interpret the data.

ABSTRACTThe article presented here seeks to understand gentrification in Latin America through a con- ceptual analysis. It proposes that gentrification cannot be understood only as an isolated issue, but rather that it is connected to urban heritage management –as a common effect of urban planning– and to the historic center –as an area of the city which is not only specific in a historical sense, but also in terms of the historicity of the city–. Gentrification tends to develop in central spaces in other latitudes; the desire to understand the possibilities of Latin American historical centers as spaces that generate gentrification, or not, emerges from such a phenomenon. In addi- tion to a search to deepen concepts and theories, the purpose of the paper is to determine, on the basis of Latin American cases, if it is objective to speak of gentrification in the historical centers of Latin America and what particularities the region may have regarding such processes. Gentrifi- cation is currently a controversial category due to its Anglo-Saxon origin and any Euro-American conceptualization is put into question by many Latin American authors, in terms of the appropri- ateness of the use of concept. Keywords.-Historical centers, gentrification, urban heritage management.

Palavras-chave: Estudo do lugar. Therefore, maps are seen as a complex and valuable means for the understanding of geographical areas. This study aimed to contribute to the geographical research regarding School Cartography by drawing attention to environmental problems in the municipality of Quevedos/RS. It consisted of a phenomenological research study which combined qualitative and quantitative approaches. Based on the results, it is believed that the practices linked to the local environmental understanding, such as the construction of mental maps, the use of teaching materials related to the municipality (Hypermap), and the written systematic thinking about its environmental reality contribute to the understanding of geographical space and temporary truths about the ‘world’ in a pivotal, interrelated and systemic way. This allows the students to think more thoughtfully, thus developing a sense of belonging and identity. Keywords: The study of the area. Living space. AbstractArguments of recovering or rehabilitating public spaces have guided interventions on squares (plazas) throughout the Latin American historic centres. In the case of the Historic Centre of Cuenca, Ecuador, from 2006 to 2016, several projects were carried out in the traditional plazas. In this context, this research aimed to analyze the practices and discourses that have predominated in cultural heritage management and the so-called public spaces of the city. For this purpose, a qualitative research, supported by documentary review, in-depth interviews, and discourse analysis was carried out. As a result, it is clear that a material approach to heritage is predominant, as well as little attention to social uses, the politicization of projects, an absence of participatory processes, and a fragmented approach to the city. The heritage discourse has forgotten the appropriations and resignifications in the present, it has not problematized the notion of public space and, in most cases, it has stigmatized social uses. Conclusions showed that historic places management requires including inter and transdisciplinary studies, rethinking heritage as a construct, and addressing, rather than the conservation of plazas, the care for urban life. Keywords Conservation, Historic centre, cultural heritage, public space, squares.

This note examines the relationship between affirmative action (AA) program perceptions and women’s self-ascribed capacity and desire to become leaders. We propose that women who believe that their organization implements a program of preferential selection toward women will experience negative psychological effects leading to lowered self-expectations for leadership, but that this effect will be moderated by their justice perceptions of AA programs. We test this proposition empirically for the first time with a Latin American female sample. Among Brazilian women managers, desire but not self-ascribed capacity to lead was reduced when they believed an AA policy was in place. Both desire’s and capacity’s relationships with belief in an AA policy were moderated by justice perceptions.

Is it possible to transform stone into a technological and innovative device? The meeting with one of the main stone transformers in Europe produced the intention of a disruptive operation that could affect the strategy of the whole company. A contagious singularity. By intertwining LEAN methodologies and the human-centric approach of design thinking, we mapped the value creation in the company activating a dialogue with the workers and the management, listening to people, asking for ambitions, discovering problems and the potential of production. This qualitative and quantitative analysis conducted with a multidisciplinary approach by designers, architects and marketing strategists allowed us to define a new method. We used it to design a platform that could let all the players express their potential to the maximum. This is how the group's research laboratory was born, with the aim of promoting the relationship between humans and stone through product innovation. With this goal, we coordinated the new team, developing technologies that would allow creating a more direct relationship between man and surface, making the stone reactive. The result was the first responsive kitchen ever.

Palabras clave: educación, valores, fuente de valores, integración, cultura EDUCATION AND VALUES ABSTRACT The article offers a reflection on education and values. After a reference to the different senses in which one can pose the problem in terms of how you can understand the relationship between the two nouns “education” and “values”, reflection focuses on some problems related to the values in the contents of education. First, it concerns the problem of the criterion against which to determine the values of education, concluding that the criterion could be neither a priori in nature, not empirical, but “synthetic”. Herein, the problem of principle is faced, the source of values, or the realization of the criterion of the values of education, understanding that these should be determined from the subject of education. It concludes with the reference of a requirement of the values in education, setting up a unitary and interactive whole. Key Words: education, values , power values , integration, culture

This article analyzes how the research on the relation between capitalism and the state in Latin America has developed from the 1950s up to the present. It starts from the premise that knowledge of this relation in sociology and other social sciences in Latin America has been taking shape through the disputes that have opposed three intellectual standpoints: autonomist, denialist, and North-centric. It analyzes how these standpoints envision the relationship between economy and politics and how they conceptualize three regionally and globally growing trends: the concentration of power, social inequality, and environmental depletion. It concludes with a series of challenges aimed at restoring the theoretical and political potency of the autonomist program in Latin American sociology.
