Abstract In the present paper, the acoustic emission (AE) device is used with an innovative approach, based on the calculation of P-wave propagation velocity (vp ), to detect the stiffness characteristics and the diffused damage of in-service old concrete structures. The paper presents the result of a recent testing campaign carried out on the slant pillars composing the vertical bearing structures designed by Pier Luigi Nervi in one of his most iconic buildings: the Hall B of Torino Esposizioni. In order to investigate the properties of these inclined pillars, localizations of artificial sources (hammer impacts), by the triangulation procedure, were performed on three different inclined elements characterized by stiffness discrepancies due to different causes: the casting procedures, executed in different stages, and the enlargement of the hall happened a few years later the beginning of the construction. In the present work, the relationship between the velocity of AE signals and the elastic characteristics (principally elastic modulus, E) is evaluated in order to discriminate the stiffness level of the slanted pillars. The procedure presented made it possible to develop an innovative investigation method able to estimate, by means of AE, the state of conservation and the elastic properties and the damage level of the monitored concrete and reinforced concrete structures.

With the ubiquitous use of mobile imaging devices, the collection of perishable disaster-scene data has become unprecedentedly easy. However, computing methods are unable to understand these images with significant complexity and uncertainties. In this paper, the authors investigate the problem of disaster-scene understanding through a deep-learning approach. Two attributes of images are concerned, including hazard types and damage levels. Three deep-learning models are trained, and their performance is assessed. Specifically, the best model for hazard-type prediction has an overall accuracy (OA) of 90.1%, and the best damage-level classification model has an explainable OA of 62.6%, upon which both models adopt the Faster R-CNN architecture with a ResNet50 network as a feature extractor. It is concluded that hazard types are more identifiable than damage levels in disaster-scene images. Insights are revealed, including that damage-level recognition suffers more from inter- and intra-class variations, and the treatment of hazard-agnostic damage leveling further contributes to the underlying uncertainties.

Abstract Background Irradiation has emerged as a valid tool for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in situ treatment; however, NPC derived from tissues treated with irradiation is a main cause cancer-related death. The purpose of this study is to uncover the underlying mechanism regarding tumor growth after irradiation and provided potential therapeutic strategy. Methods Fibroblasts were extracted from fresh NPC tissue and normal nasopharyngeal mucosa. Immunohistochemistry was conducted to measure the expression of α-SMA and FAP. Cytokines were detected by protein array chip and identified by real-time PCR. CCK-8 assay was used to detect cell proliferation. Radiation-resistant (IRR) 5-8F cell line was established and colony assay was performed to evaluate tumor cell growth after irradiation. Signaling pathways were acquired via gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA). Comet assay and γ-H2AX foci assay were used to measure DNA damage level. Protein expression was detected by western blot assay. In vivo experiment was performed subcutaneously. Results We found that radiation-resistant NPC tissues were constantly infiltrated with a greater number of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) compared to radiosensitive NPC tissues. Further research revealed that CAFs induced the formation of radioresistance and promoted NPC cell survival following irradiation via the IL-8/NF-κB pathway to reduce irradiation-induced DNA damage. Treatment with Tranilast, a CAF inhibitor, restricted the survival of CAF-induced NPC cells and attenuated the of radioresistance properties. Conclusions Together, these data demonstrate that CAFs can promote the survival of irradiated NPC cells via the NF-κB pathway and induce radioresistance that can be interrupted by Tranilast, suggesting the potential value of Tranilast in sensitizing NPC cells to irradiation.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menentukan waktu perlakuan optimal dan suhu penyimpanan dingin untuk mutu kubis bunga. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap (RAL) yang terdiri dari dua faktor, faktor pertama adalah suhu yang digunakan dan faktor kedua adalah waktu selama show case. Faktor pertama terdiri dari dua level, yaitu (P1): show case temperature 8oC, dan (P2): show case temperature 15oC dan tambah kontrol (P0). Faktor kedua terdiri dari empat level, yaitu (A0): penyimpanan selama 0 jam, (A1): penyimpanan selama 12 jam, (A2): penyimpanan selama 16 jam, (A3): penyimpanan selama 20 jam dan diulang untuk 3 kali ulangan. Kubis bunga sebagai kontrol disimpan pada suhu kamar (28 ± 1 ?). Parameter kualitas yang diamati dalam penelitian ini termasuk penurunan berat badan, tingkat konsumsi O2, warna (warna berbeda), uji organoleptik termasuk umur simpan dan tingkat kerusakan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan parameter penurunan susut bobot, laju konsumsi O2, warna, umur simpan, tingkat kerusakan pada suhu perlakuan suhu terbaik adalah suhu 8 ? dan waktu penyimpanan 20 jam (P1A3).Kata kunci: kembang kol, waktu penyimpanan, suhu penyimpanan dingin   The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal treatment time and cold storage temperature for the quality of cabbage flowers. This study uses a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of two factors, the first factor is the temperature used and the second factor is the time during the showcase. The first factor consists of two levels, namely (P1): showcase temperature of 8oC, and (P2): showcase temperature of 15oC and added a control (P0). The second factor consists of four levels, namely (A0): storage for 0 hours, (A1): storage for 12 hours, (A2): storage for 16 hours, (A3): storage for 20 hours and repeated for 3 replications. Flower cabbage as control was stored at room temperature (28 ± 1 ?). The quality parameters observed in this study included weight loss, O2 consumption rate, color (color different), organoleptic tests including shelf life and damage level. The results showed the parameters of weight loss, O2 consumption rate, color, shelf life, damage rate at the best temperature of 8 ? and storage time of 20 hours (P1A3). AbstractThis paper presents the fragility assessment of non-seismically designed steel moment frames with masonry infills. The assessment considered the effects of multiple earthquakes on the damage accumulation of steel frames, which is an essential part of modern performance-based earthquake engineering. Effects of aftershocks are particularly important when examining damaged buildings and making post-quake decisions, such as tagging and retrofit strategy. The procedure proposed in the present work includes two phase assessment, which is based on incremental dynamic analyses of two refined numerical models of the case-study steel frame, i.e. with and without masonry infills, and utilises mainshock-aftershock sequences of natural earthquake records. The first phase focuses on the undamaged structure subjected to single and multiple earthquakes; the effects of masonry infills on the seismic vulnerability of the steel frame were also considered. In the second phase, aftershock fragility curves were derived to investigate the seismic vulnerability of infilled steel frames with post-mainshock damage caused by mainshocks. Comparative analyses were conducted among the mainshock-damaged structures considering three post-mainshock damage levels, including no damage. The impact of aftershocks was then discussed for each mainshock-damage level in terms of the breakpoint that marks the onset of exceeding post-mainshock damage level, as well as the probability of exceeding of superior damage level due to more significant aftershocks. The evaluation of the efficiency of commonly used intensity measures of aftershocks was also carried out as part of the second phase of assessment.
