The objective of this work was to optimize the production of pigments by Rhodotorula minuta and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa through submerged fermentation, using yellow passion fruit peel (Passiflora edulis), as the only substrate. The independent variables evaluated to optimize were: yellow passion fruit peel (YPFP), in grams (g) as culture medium, pH and fermentation time, in days. The study of pigment production and its optimization was carried out using the Doehlert matrix, with fifteen experimental conditions, of which thirteen had different combinations and two repeated the central point. The fixed variables were 30ºC and 150 rpm. Data analysis was performed using the Statistica software version 10.0. The largest amount of total pigments and total carotenoids produced by R. minuta was 28±0.01 mg/L and 72.8±0.026 µg/g, respectively; while for R. mucilaginosa the production of total pigments was 37±0.002 mg/L and total carotenoids 236.8±0.013 µg/g. The optimum production point of total pigments for R. minuta was 2.3g of YPFP, pH 6.5 and 5 days and for R. mucilaginosa 2.5g of YPFP pH 6 and 5 days. In samples of total pigments, the presence of 0.29mg/L of β-carotene for R. minuta and 0.83 mg/L for R. mucilaginosa was identified. It is possible to conclude that yellow passion fruit peel can be used as a nutrient source for Rhodotorula spp growth and pigment production with total carotenoids and β-carotene in its composition.

Palavras-chave: Passiflora edulis, calagem, lixiviação de sais     CAVALCANTE, L. YELLOW PASSION FRUIT PLANTS PRODUCTION ON SOIL WITH LIME AND POTASSIUM UNDER IRRIGATION WITH SALINE WATER       2 ABSTRACT   The experiment was carried out in Coronel Ezequiel county, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, in order to evaluate the effects of limestone and chloride potassium in production components of yellow passion fruit plants and soil salinity, caused by irrigation with saline water of 3.6 dS m-1 during the dry season, and salt leaching of the soil promoted by waters of the rainy season. Treatments were arranged in randomized blocks using factorial design of 3 × 2, referring to three levels of limestone,  1.4, 2.5 and 3.6 t ha-1 and two potassium levels,  80 and 160 kg ha-1 in potassium chloride form. According to present results, irrigation with saline water (3.6 dS m-1), in comparison with data from the literature about plants irrigated with non-saline water, did no compromise the productive capacity of yellow passion fruit. Among the treatments, the combination of 80 kg ha-1 of K2O with 3.6 t ha-1 of limestone provided the fruits production with more mean mass, yield per plant and crop yield. Although the high salinity of the irrigation water increases the soil saline character on root environment of the plants during the dry season, the rainy season waters and the soil physical conditions provide the salt leaching and allow the use of water with saline restrictions in agriculture.   Keywords: Passiflora edulis, liming, salt lixiviation

BACKGROUND: The Passion Fruit (Passiflora sp.) that grows in the Indonesian region generally has three varieties, namely purple passion fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims.), red passion fruit (Passiflora ligularis Juss.), and yellow passion fruit (Passiflora verrucifera Lindl.). The passion fruit peel is an economic waste that has not been utilised optimally, but has many efficacious phytochemical contents. AIM: The objectives of this research are to examine scientifically hepatoprotective activity (with paracetamol-induced hepatotoxic) and nephroprotective activity (with gentamicin-induced nephrotoxic) from three varieties of the passion fruit (purple passion fruit peel extract, red passion fruit peel extract and yellow passion fruit peel extract) in the albino rat (Rattus norvegicus). METHODS: Three varieties of passion fruit peels were extracted by maceration method. The experimental animals used were the albino rat (Rattus norvegicus). Hepatoprotective activity was done by the liver biochemical (alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase) analysis with paracetamol (hepatotoxic compound) induced after 10 days of treatment with extract. Nephroprotective activity was done by the kidney biochemical (urea and creatinine) analysis with gentamicin (nephrotoxic compound) induced after 10 days of treatment with extract. RESULTS: The hepatoprotective activity for positive control was similar to the 250 mg of purple passion fruit peel extract per kg of body weight, 250 mg of red passion fruit peel extract per kg of body weight, and 500 mg of yellow passion fruit peel extract per kg of body weight. The nephroprotective activity for positive control (50 mg of silymarin per kg of body weight) was similar to the 250 mg of purple passion fruit peel extract per kg of body weight, 500 mg of red passion fruit peel extract per kg of body weight, and 500 mg of yellow passion fruit peel extract per kg of body weight. CONCLUSIONS: The extracts were shown hepatoprotective activity and nephroprotective activity with a dose-dependent activity. The hepatoprotective activity and nephroprotective activity of purple passion fruit peel extract were the best compared to red passion fruit peel extract and yellow passion fruit peel extract.
