This essay offers a twofold exploration of the art of epitaph in Charles Dickens's writing. First, it considers the memorial inscriptions that Dickens wrote for friends and family members in light of contemporary debates about epitaph's proper form and function, nuancing understanding of the author's epitaphic aesthetic. Second, it examines the creative potential of epitaph in Dickens's fiction, by tracing the migration of epitaphic text from actual to fictional inscriptions and between paper and stone. In doing so, it argues that for Dickens the art of epitaph is fundamentally carnivalesque, as a supposedly succinct form of death writing generates extended texts and paratexts, new stories, and fresh associations.

Contemporary cosmetic dentists are expected to create realistic and seamless restorations that mimic natural tooth structures. Recent advancements in composite resin systems have improved the practitioners ability to deliver optimal results using chair-side techniques. Many times, the form and function is achieved but the surface of these restorations is not smooth. This might lead to rough or uneven surfaces which over time invite microbial flora leading to an inevitable failure of the restoration. To avoid such failures and to satisfy this patient-driven demand for aesthetic restorations, the use of exemplary finishing and polishing materials is required. These techniques of finishing and polishing helps to achieve the proper form and function of the restoration along with pleasing aesthetics and the maintenance of proper periodontal and gingival health. This article aims to briefly outline finishing and polishing of composite restorations.

Abstract This study looks into the patterns of metaphor use in the family register of scripted sitcom conversations. Previous studies of metaphor in conversation adopted different approaches to the concept of register, resulting in a rich but complex picture (Cameron, 2003, 2007, 2008; Deignan, Littlemore & Semino, 2013; Kaal, 2012). This research attempts to reduce such complexity by using an approach to register based on closely defining communicative settings and the participants’ roles (Giménez-Moreno, 2006). In this way, we were able to focus on the register used by family members and close friends and the contexts of private oral communication, as opposed to other possible registers characteristic of professional conversations or those between friends. The study provides data on the frequency, typology, grammatical form and function of the metaphors used in the fictional dialogues between family members and close friends from two British sitcoms, “Gavin & Stacey” and “The Royle Family”. The findings, in general, confirm the patterns of metaphor use in naturally-occurring (UK) conversation, but show lower frequency ranges than other more purpose-oriented contexts. The main contribution of this study is the evaluation of metaphor as an ‘appraisal resource’ (Martin & White, 2005) and its frequent use in assessing the participants’ attitudes. The study suggests that defining register in terms of communicative setting and participants’ roles can help to provide comparable data on metaphor variation.

AbstractResearch on call names or greetings based on family members who died in the Kenyah Lepoq Jalan language is important as a form of documentation and cultural preservation. This study aims to describe the form and function of call names or greetings based on family members who died. Data collection techniques were obtained from informants through interviews with record and note techniques. Data analysis techniques in this study used descriptive analysis, namely the analysis of linguistic and sociolinguistic data. The data analysis model used is an interactive model analysis consisting of three components of analysis, namely data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Based on the results of research and discussion, the forms of call name or greeting based on the death of family members in Kenyah Lepoq Jalan are classified into three, namely  call names that are neutral (female and male), nicknames for female gender, and  call names for gender Male. The function of the use of these greetings, namely: (a) as the identity of the Kenyah Lepoq Jalan community, (b) to find out the status of the speech partner, (c) gender marker of the speech partner, (d) as a social interaction, and (e) as a control social.

SUMMARY This case report presents treatment of a mandibular second molar with an extensive proximal margin, which was finished on amalgam-stained dentin. A resin-modified glass ionomer for margin elevation and a lithium disilicate onlay were used to restore the tooth to proper form and function. The patient has been followed for six years and has had no complications during this period.

Progressive carious and inflammatory involvement of teeth if left untreated will ultimately lead the loss of tooth structure in the oral cavity. Earlier clinician was left with no option but extraction of such hopeless teeth followed by replacement with fixed partial denture, removable partial denture or implants. Hemisection is a removal of compromised root and the associated crown portion. It is one of the treatment options for preserving remaining part of molar having sound periodontium. This case report presents a patient in which distal half of the teeth was carious but with sound periodontium and the periodontally compromised mesial root was resected, and after healing, fixed dental prosthesis was delivered to restore proper form and function

STM is one of the most promising techniques available for visualizing the fine details of biomolecular structure. It has been used to map the surface topography of inorganic materials in atomic dimensions, and thus has the resolving power not only to determine the conformation of small molecules but to distinguish site-specific features within a molecule. That level of detail is of critical importance in understanding the relationship between form and function in biological systems. The size, shape, and accessibility of molecular structures can be determined much more accurately by STM than by electron microscopy since no staining, shadowing or labeling with heavy metals is required, and there is no exposure to damaging radiation by electrons. Crystallography and most other physical techniques do not give information about individual molecules. We have obtained striking images of DNA and RNA, using calf thymus DNA and two synthetic polynucleotides, poly(dG-me5dC)·poly(dG-me5dC) and poly(rA)·poly(rU).
