Virtual reality is increasingly used in rehabilitation and can provide additional motivation when working toward therapeutic goals. However, a particular problem for patients regards their ability to plan routes in unfamiliar environments. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore how visual cues, namely embedded context-sensitive attractors, can guide attention and walking direction in VR, for clinical walking interventions. This study was designed using a butterfly as the embedded context-sensitive attractor, to guide participant locomotion around the clinical figure of eight walk test, to limit the use of verbal instructions. We investigated the effect of varying the number of attractors for figure of eight path following, and whether there are any negative impacts on perceived autonomy or workload. A total of 24 participants took part in the study and completed six attractor conditions in a counterbalanced order. They also experienced a control VE (no attractors) at the beginning and end of the protocol. Each VE condition lasted a duration of 1 min and manipulated the number of attractors to either singular or multiple alongside, the placement of turning markers (virtual trees) used to represent the cones used in clinical settings for the figure of eight walk test. Results suggested that embedded context-sensitive attractors can be used to guide walking direction, following a figure of eight in VR without impacting perceived autonomy, and workload. However, there appears to be a saturation point, with regards to effectiveness of attractors. Too few objects in a VE may reduce feelings of intrinsic motivation, and too many objects in a VE may reduce the effectiveness of attractors for guiding individuals along a figure of eight path. We conclude by indicating future research directions, for attractors and their use as a guide for walking direction.

Purpose The architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry exists in a dynamic environment and requires several stakeholders to communicate regularly. However, evidence indicates current communication practices fail to meet the requirements of increasingly complex projects. With the advent of Industry 4.0, a trend is noted to create a digital communication environment between stakeholders. Identified as a central technology in Industry 4.0, virtual reality (VR) has the potential to supplement current communication and facilitate the digitization of the AEC industry. This paper aims to explore how VR has been applied and future research directions for communication purpose. Design/methodology/approach This research follows a systematic literature assessment methodology to summarize the results of 41 research articles in the last 15 years and outlines the applications of VR in facilitating communication in the AEC domain. Findings Relevant VR applications are mainly found in building inspection, facility management, safety training, construction education and design and review. Communication tools and affordance are provided or built in several forms: text-based tools, voice chat tool, visual sharing affordance and avatars. Objective and subjective communication assessments are observed from those publications. Originality/value This review contributes to identifying the recent employment areas and future research directions of VR to facilitate communication in the AEC domain. The outcome can be a practical resource to guide both industry professionals and researchers to recognize the potentials of VR and will ultimately facilitate the creation of digital construction environments.

The exponential advancement in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, robotics, and automation are rapidly transforming industries and societies across the world. The way we work, the way we live, and the way we interact with others are expected to be transformed at a speed and scale beyond anything we have observed in human history. This new industrial revolution is expected, on one hand, to enhance and improve our lives and societies. On the other hand, it has the potential to cause major upheavals in our way of life and our societal norms. The window of opportunity to understand the impact of these technologies and to preempt their negative effects is closing rapidly. Humanity needs to be proactive, rather than reactive, in managing this new industrial revolution. This article looks at the promises, challenges, and future research directions of these transformative technologies. Not only are the technological aspects investigated, but behavioral, societal, policy, and governance issues are reviewed as well. This research contributes to the ongoing discussions and debates about AI, automation, machine learning, and robotics. It is hoped that this article will heighten awareness of the importance of understanding these disruptive technologies as a basis for formulating policies and regulations that can maximize the benefits of these advancements for humanity and, at the same time, curtail potential dangers and negative impacts.

Virtual reality (VR) is receiving enough attention to be regarded as a revival era and technologies related to the implementation of VR systems continue to evolve. VR systems are applied not only in entertainment but also in various fields such as medicine, rehabilitation, education, engineering, and military (Aïm, Lonjon, Hannouche, & Nizard, 2016; Howard, 2017; Lele, 2013). In particular, low-cost and immersive VR systems are commercialized to the general public, accelerating the revival of VR (Wang & Lindeman, 2015). In VR system, the research from the viewpoint of human–computer interaction and user experience (UX) is required to provide a high sense of immersion to the user. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide a structural methodology for classifying current VR researches and to review UX evaluation of VR systems systematically to identify research trends and to clarify future research directions. This study followed systematic review protocol of (PRISMA) (Liberati et al., 2009). To cover a broad spectrum of perspectives of engineering and medical fields, six web databases were selected: Scopus, Web of Science, Science direct, IEEE Xplore, EBSCO, and ProQuest. The main search keywords were virtual reality and user experience. These two words can be used in acronyms or other words. As a result, four and three words were chosen for virtual reality and user experience, respectively (‘virtual reality’, ‘virtual environment’, ‘VR,’ and ‘VE’ were chosen as keywords for virtual reality, ‘user experience’, ‘UX,’ and ‘human experience’). In addition, the journal articles in English were searched only. After the screening process was completed, final articles were selected based on the full-text. In this process, there were two essential selection conditions. The selected articles should use VR system and evaluate UX component. No restrictions other than these conditions were made. As a result, 78 articles were found to be consistent with the purpose of this study. As a result, there were two main points of discussion about UX studies in a VR system. The first is related to the implementation of equipment and technology including input devices, output devices, feedback forms, platforms, and applications. The other is related to research methods including user characteristics, interactions, and evaluation method. With respect to hand input devices, conventional input devices such as keyboards and game pads were used in many cases compared to trackable devices. However, as implementation techniques for natural interaction such as gesture recognition or real-time tracking of the body parts have been extensively developed, UX research needs to be conducted on VR systems that apply these techniques. In relation to feedback, stimuli other than visual stimuli were not frequently provided. Since providing multiple types of stimuli simultaneously may increase the user’s immersion and sense of reality, it is necessary to intensively study the effect of multi-sensory feedback in the future. In addition, there is a lack of academic research on CAVE and motion platforms. Though CAVE and motion platforms are difficult to set up for experimentation because they are expensive to build and require large space, there is a need to continually expand the UX research on this platform since the public will have more opportunities to access these platforms. Regarding research methods, most of the studies have focused on subjective measurements, quantitative research, laboratory experiments, and episode UX. To comprehensively understand the overall UX, it is necessary to conduct a qualitative study such as observation of subjects experiencing a VR system, think aloud, or deep interview with them, rather than evaluating UX only through a questionnaire. In addition, there was no case in which UX was evaluated in terms of momentary UX. However, there is a limit to evaluating the subjective measurement such as immersion, presence, and motion sickness during usage by directly asking the user, since the VR system provides an immersive environment to the user. Thus, behavioral characteristic or physiological signal of users can be used as one of the evaluation indicators of these measurements. Today, new VR systems are emerging and VR-related technologies are expected to evolve steadily. In this context, the findings can contribute to future research directions and provide insights into conducting UX evaluation in VR system.

Purpose This paper aims to present a systematic review of the literature on sustainability for the competitiveness of firms to identify the state of the art, significant discussions and new research directions. Recently, due to the negative impacts that traditional and unsustainable practices of companies have caused the Planet (e.g. climate change, sanitary crisis), national and international research urgently calls for the assessment of sustainable practices in firms. However, progress seems slow due to a poor understanding of the necessary changes that companies must make in their specific reality. Competitiveness has remained as firms’ primary strategy to endure. Some have associated sustainability with an increment of costs, sometimes with a negative impact on its competitiveness. Sometimes generating oppositions from stakeholder and institutions regulations, it is important to explore how these behaviors and dynamics of this relationship between sustainability and competitiveness affect the pursued transition to sustainability. Design/methodology/approach A systematic review of the literature, which is a scientific tool, is used in this research. It allows reliably and accurately analyzing and constructing conclusions from a broad database. The search was leaked over the 10 years, from 2010 to 2019. As a basis, 182 scientific articles were identified and revised based on methodology selection criteria and 51 articles were revised in detail. Findings This paper identifies critical variables analyzed in the selected articles, sustainability strategies for competitiveness, strategies for sustainability, organizational aspects for sustainability and competitiveness, measurement of sustainability, models, moderating factors for sustainability and new future research directions. Originality/value This paper presents state of art about sustainability for competitiveness and identifying key themes and future research directions.

Light pollution is the consequence of elevated lighting emitted by human-made artefacts to the lower atmosphere. Recently, there have been major advances in the assessment and mitigation of light pollution impacts on humans and the natural ecosystems. Severe negative impacts of light pollution have been highlighted while very few mitigation measures have been implemented. People (scientists, policymakers or stakeholders) interested in light pollution may not have a holistic perspective of the problem, and also there is a need for incorporating social and natural dimensions. Therefore, the main goal of this paper is to review the literature on light pollution using ISI Web of Science by paying attention to the (i) type of publication, year and journal; (ii) impacts on specific elements; (iii) location and (iv) methods used. Our results indicated that the elevated number of papers come from a diverse range of disciplines, methods, places and scales. It is clear that light pollution is getting enough attention from the scientific community but decisions on the implementation of mitigation measures are left with the stakeholders, ordinary inhabitants, policymakers and politicians. Nevertheless, light pollution is having impacts on the health of humans and the natural ecosystem as perceived by experts and inhabitants having divergent perspectives. Thus, light pollution is multifaceted but difficult to be faced, mitigated and not holistically understood. This review paper groups the total impacts of light pollution on the Earth presents some contradictory results, summarises mitigation measures, and provides specific future research directions.

The purposes of this chapter are three-fold: to (a) review the research on 3D immersive and interactive technology (or virtual reality, VR) conducted so far for educational purposes both in the earlier years of the technology and in more recent years, (b) discuss a few VR technology tools available today, and (c) describe three scenarios in science, mathematics, and language learning to demonstrate how the current VR technology can be designed for education. In addition, primary challenges of using 3D immersive and interactive technology in education are also discussed along with future research directions. The intent of this chapter is to provide ideas and insights for researchers and designers who are interested in applying the VR technology in education.

Nanotechnology is employed across a wide range of antibacterial applications in clinical settings, food, pharmaceutical and textile industries, water treatment and consumer goods. Depending on type and concentration, engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) can also benefit bacteria in myriad contexts including within the human body, in biotechnology, environmental bioremediation, wastewater treatment, and agriculture. However, to realize the full potential of nanotechnology across broad applications, it is necessary to understand conditions and mechanisms of detrimental or beneficial effects of ENMs to bacteria. To study ENM effects, bacterial population growth or viability are commonly assessed. However, such endpoints alone may be insufficiently sensitive to fully probe ENM effects on bacterial physiology. To reveal more thoroughly how bacteria respond to ENMs, molecular-level omics methods such as transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics are required. Because omics methods are increasingly utilized, a body of literature exists from which to synthesize state-of-the-art knowledge. Here we review relevant literature regarding ENM impacts on bacterial cellular pathways obtained by transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic analyses across three growth and viability effect levels: inhibitory, sub-inhibitory or stimulatory. As indicated by our analysis, a wider range of pathways are affected in bacteria at sub-inhibitory vs. inhibitory ENM effect levels, underscoring the importance of ENM exposure concentration in elucidating ENM mechanisms of action and interpreting omics results. In addition, challenges and future research directions of applying omics approaches in studying bacterial-ENM interactions are discussed.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the connections between sexual harassment and ostracism both before and after the modern day #MeToo movement. It outlines how the birth of the #MeToo movement lessened the impact of ostracism, empowering victims to report their abusers. Design/methodology/approach This paper provides an overview of the ostracism literature, and discusses why ostracism has historically prevented individuals from disclosing workplace abuse. It also examines recent and historical cases of sexual harassment where ostracism has both inhibited targets of sexual harassment from reporting and harmed those who stood up for their right not to be harassed. Findings Both purposeful and non-purposeful ostracism have negative impacts on employees and organizations as a whole, and the fear of ostracism prevented many from disclosing harassment and abuse in the workplace. The #MeToo movement, by nature, is antithetical to ostracism by building community and freeing people to seek justice. This paper makes practical recommendations for organizations that wish to help prevent ostracism as a response to workplace sexual harassment disclosure. Research limitations/implications Both purposeful and non-purposeful ostracism have negative impacts on employees and organizations as a whole, and the fear of ostracism prevent many from disclosing harassment and abuse in the workplace. The #MeToo movement by nature is antithetical to ostracism, building community and freeing people to seek justice. This paper makes practical recommendations for organizations that wish to prevent ostracism as a response to workplace sexual harassment disclosure. Additionally, it provides future research directions to explore the empirical link between the disclosure of sexual harassment and ostracism. Originality/value This paper analyzes a crucial barrier to reporting sexual harassment. It both examines the consequences of ostracism and highlights how the threat of ostracism can be overcome through intentional organizational efforts.

It is common for individuals with symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to present with co-occurring pain problems, and vice versa. However, the relation between these conditions often goes unrecognized in clinical settings. In this paper, we describe potential relations between PTSD and chronic pain and their implications for assessment and treatment. To accomplish this, we discuss phenomenological similarities of these conditions, the prevalence of chronic pain in patients with PTSD, and the prevalence of PTSD in patients with chronic pain. We also present several possible explanations for the co-occurrence of these disorders, based primarily on the notions of shared vulnerability and mutual maintenance. The paper concludes with an overview of future research directions, as well as practical recommendations for assessing and treating patients who present with co-occurring PTSD or chronic pain symptoms.
