In this study, the temperature distribution of a pavement was predicted by developing an analytic algorithm. The Laplace and inverse Laplace transform techniques and Gaussian quadratic formula were applied to a pavement system of an asphalt overlay placed over an existing concrete pavement. The temperature distribution of the previous cement concrete pavement with an asphalt overlay can be estimated with the proposed analytical method regardless of the depth and time. To conduct the method, the layer thicknesses, material thermal properties and climatic factors (including air temperature, wind velocity and solar radiation) were firstly input. Then, a discrete least-squares approximation of the interpolatory trigonometric polynomials was used to fit some specific measured climatic factors considered in the surface boundary condition, i.e., the measured solar radiation intensity and air temperature. The pavement surface convection coefficient can be approximately calculated by the wind speed. The temperature solutions are validated with the measured pavement temperature data of two different periods of a whole year (summer and winter). The obtained results demonstrate the feasibility of the developed analytical approach to predict the temperature distribution of the existing cement concrete pavement with an asphalt overlay in different weather conditions with acceptable accuracy.

The effective treatment of void cement concrete pavement slab through grouting technology is the important premise of ensuring the service performance of asphalt overlay engineer on cement concrete pavement. Based on the current problems of grouting technology, we did experimental studies on the mixing proportion of grout slurry and analyzed the effects of slurry composition and admixture type on mechanical properties including the strength, mobility, viscosity, expansion rate and bleeding rate of the slurry and on the service performance. Based on these, we put forward the control indexes for grouting slurry mix proportion determination which provided guidance for the design and construction quality control of grouting under the old cement concrete pavement slab.

Cement concrete pavement is the main type of highway pavement in our country. The asphalt overlay on old concrete pavement is one of the main measures to improve the pavement performance, to improve the bearing capacity and extended service life. But, the prevention of reflection cracks is a key problem need to overcome. This paper briefly analyzes cause of the formed mechanism of reflecting crack of bituminous paving course on old cement concrete pavement, and elaborated some major technical measures of preventing or retarding reflection cracks.

The melting point of polypropylene geotextile is 170 centigrade. However, during the repaving design of the old cement concrete pavement, the paving temperature of the asphalt mixture is often 160-170 centigrade or above. Therefore, it is very important to verify that whether the polypropylene geotextile can be paved under a high temperature. Through the modeling and analysis of temperature fields and relevant temperature tests in the laboratory, the paper has tested the surface temperatures of the polypropylene geotexile when the asphalt mixture is paved under a high temperature. The results show that, under a simulated paving temperature of over 190 centigrade, the highest temperature of polypropylene geotextile is only about 160 centigrade, which is lower than its melting point. Therefore, the polypropylene geotextile can be used for the paving under a high temperature.

Temperature is known to be one of the most important factors affecting the design and performance of asphalt concrete pavement. The distresses of asphalt overlay are closely related to its temperature, particularly in Guangxi, a hot-humid-climate region in China. This research is to analyze the impact of meteorological factors on temperature at 2 cm depth in asphalt overlay by ReliefF algorithm and also obtain the temperature prediction model using MATLAB. Two test sites were installed to monitor the temperatures at different pavement depths from 2014 to 2016; meanwhile, the meteorological data (including air temperature, solar radiation, wind speed, and relative humidity) were collected from the two meteorological stations. It has been found that the temperature at 2 cm depth experiences greater temperature variation, and the maximum and minimum temperatures of asphalt overlay, respectively, occur at 2 cm depth and on the surface. Besides, the results of ReliefF algorithm have also shown that the temperature at 2 cm depth is affected significantly by solar radiation, air temperature, wind speed, and the relative humidity. Based on these analyses, the prediction model of maximum temperature at 2 cm depth is developed using statistical regression. Moreover, the data collected in 2017 are used to validate the accuracy of the model. Compared with the existing models, the developed model was confirmed to be more effective for temperature prediction in hot-humid region. In addition, the analysis of rutting depth and overlay deformation for the two test sections with different materials is done, and the results have shown that reasonable structure and materials of asphalt overlay are vital to promote the high-temperature antideforming capability of pavement.

By using finite element method, the thermal stress of stress absorption interlayer of asphalt overlay on the cement concrete pavement is analyzed in this paper. The result shows that the inter-laminar shear stress and the structural vertical displacement are influenced by the thickness of stress absorption layer, while the asphalt bottom stress is less affected; the increase of the modulus is unfavorable to the structural vertical displacement, the inter-laminar shear stress and the asphalt bottom stress.

In view of the the imperfection of design method of asphalt overlay on old cement under heavy-load traffic, and with the background of a successful practice of repaving improvement project in Xia Jiaying-Fen Yang expressway, this article analyzes the mechanical response of the old cement concrete road slab and the overlay, takes the influence of the void under slab on the life expectancy of asphalt overlay into account, and advances the mechanistic-empirical design process of asphalt overlay under heavy-load traffic. In comparison with Chinese standard, this method takes the influence of old concrete pavement on the reflective cracking of overlay into consideration, which ensures that there is no reflective cracking on the overlay in 3 years.

Based on the improved Paris formula, the reflection cracking characteristics of asphalt overlay on the cement concrete pavement are carefully scrutinized. The fatigue life is also predicted through the indoor simulation tests and establishing the two- and three-dimensional extended finite-element method (XFEM) models. Four fracture factors of the Paris formula in the asphalt mixture are appropriately calculated by fitting the N-a curve of the indoor test, and their predicted values are then exploited in the numerical simulations. The obtained results show that the numerical model can successfully predict the results of the indoor simulation test. It indicates that the XFEM has apparent advantages in examining the reflection cracking of the asphalt overlay on the cement concrete pavement.
