The optimal solar radiation received on an inclined surface is always critical for energy purposes at a location or in an area. Therefore, many attempts have been made worldwide to calculate the optimum tilt angle for this purpose. The present study gives an answer about the south-oriented inclination or inclinations of solar panels in Greece for maximum efficiency. The analysis shows that an angle of 25° (and 30° in some cases) facing south is the most appropriate. To calculate this, the energy sums received on surfaces with inclination angles of 0–60° with a step of 5°, including φ° (φ being the geographical latitude) facing south at 33 locations in Greece were analyzed monthly, seasonally, and annually. The solar radiation data used in this work comes from corresponding typical meteorological years (TMYs) generated for the above locations. TMYs are used for the first time worldwide for the study of the optimum energy received by solar panels tilted south. Four new energy zones are defined to cover the whole of Greece.

The article suggests the method for calculating the solar radiation on a horizontal surface of the territory of Syria which has been developed using the weather database of NASA and ArcGIS software to create the atlases of Syria. In order to compute the solar radiation on an inclined surface for Syria, the following steps were taken. Firstly, the method proposed by Liu and Jordan (1962) and developed by Klein (1977) was used and applied at a point with a latitude of 33º and a longitude of 36º in Syria to calculate the total average daily monthly and yearly solar radiation on an inclined surface and its components (direct, diffuse and ground reflected). Secondly, the annual and monthly values of the optimal tilt angle of the solar panels were determined. Thirdly, verification of reliability and accuracy of calculations was carried out. Finally, using the interpolation method (inverse distance weighted IDW) in ArcGIS, the method proposed was applied to 63 points that covered the territory of Syria. Thus, we developed an Atlas of Syria of solar radiation on an inclined surface which characterized by the optimal tilt angles of solar panels and the maximum annual solar radiation on an inclined surface under these angles. Solar Radiation Atlas of Syria shows that the annual optimal tilt angle of the solar panels varies in the range from 23º to 28º and the maximum average annual solar radiation on an inclined surface under these angles varies in the range from 1859 to 2069 kWh/m2·year. In addition, on the basis of the NASA meteorological database, we determined the average total gross (natural) potential of solar energy on optimal inclined surfaces in Syria which is 362.1·103 TWh per year.

The environmental pollution that arose from the 20th century has led to the search for clean and renewable energies, so this research aims to determine the efficiency of a two-axis solar tracker system, through the analysis of the data obtained. In view of the fact that it remains perpendicular to the solar rays for a longer time, which automatically moves to the point where the radiation source is. Mathematical models were considered for this study based on parameters of time, voltage, solar radiation, temperature, ultraviolet radiation, inclination angles, and cardinal points, to which the panel was directed during the test days.  The efficiency given by the solar panel was obtained as 15.34% on average among monocrystalline silicon solar panels. It was concluded with the analysis of the most relevant data that are, the voltage, the solar radiation, and the angle of inclination to determine with these three parameters if the dual-axis tracker system had an excellent capture of solar radiation in the test days, in order to make the collection and production of solar energy more efficient.

Effects of shading and blocking of solar radiation intensity through Fresnel lens onto solar cell were investigated in this work. Fresnel lens was made of polyvinyl chloride to concentrate the solar radiation onto the polycrystalline silicon solar cell with the 0.767 m x 0.670 m in size and no cooling under the solar panels. The temperature and efficiency comparisons between solar module with and without Fresnel lens were observed. The performance of the two modules overtime is assessed by monitoring the characteristic I-V and P-V curves. The maximum efficiency of the solar panels with Fresnel lens and without Fresnel lens in each hour was approximately 5-6.7% and 8.8-11.5%, respectively. This lower efficiency of PV module with Fresnel lens was a result of unsuitable distance of Fresnel lens that operated with the PV module.

A capillary pulsed-discharge and a theta-pinch were used to record Kr spectra in the region of 330–4800 Å. A set of 168 transitions of these spectra were classified for the first time. We extended the analysis to twenty-five new energy levels belonging to 3s23p24d, 3s23p25d even configurations. We calculated weighted transition probabilities (gA) for all of the experimentally observed lines and lifetimes for new energy levels using a relativistic Hartree–Fock method, including core-polarization effects.

AbstractPhaseolus vulgaris (L.), commonly known as bean or common bean, is considered a promiscuous legume host since it forms nodules with diverse rhizobial species and symbiovars. Most of the common bean nodulating rhizobia are mainly affiliated to the genus Rhizobium, though strains belonging to Ensifer, Pararhizobium, Mesorhizobium, Bradyrhizobium, and Burkholderia have also been reported. This is the first report on the characterization of bean-nodulating rhizobia at the species and symbiovar level in Greece. The goals of this research were to isolate and characterize rhizobia nodulating local common bean genotypes grown in five different edaphoclimatic regions of Greece with no rhizobial inoculation history. The genetic diversity of the rhizobial isolates was assessed by BOX-PCR and the phylogenetic affiliation was assessed by multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) of housekeeping and symbiosis-related genes. A total of fifty fast-growing rhizobial strains were isolated and representative isolates with distinct BOX-PCR fingerpriniting patterns were subjected to phylogenetic analysis. The strains were closely related to R. anhuiense, R. azibense, R. hidalgonense, R. sophoriradicis, and to a putative new genospecies which is provisionally named as Rhizobium sp. I. Most strains belonged to symbiovar phaseoli carrying the α-, γ-a and γ-b alleles of nodC gene, while some of them belonged to symbiovar gallicum. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that strains assigned to R. sophoriradicis and harbored the γ-b allele were found in European soils. All strains were able to re-nodulate their original host, indicating that they are true microsymbionts of common bean.

A pulsed discharge light source to study the six and seven times ionized xenon spectra in the 419–4642 Å region was used. A set of 40 transitions of Xe VII and 25 transitions of Xe VIII were classified for the first time. We revised the values for the previously known energy levels and extended the analysis for Xe VII to 10 new energy levels belonging to 5s6d, 5s7s and 5s7p, 4d95s25p even and odd configurations, respectively. Seven new energy levels of the core excited configuration 4d95s5d of Xe VIII are presented. For the prediction of the atomic parameters, energy levels, and transition, relativistic Hartree–Fock calculations were used.

According to the challenge of the reduction of greenhouse gases, the structure of energy production should be revised and the increase of the ratio of alternative energy sources can be a possible solution. Redistribution of the energy production to the private houses is an alternative of large power stations at least in a partial manner. Especially, the utilization of solar energy represents a real possibility to exploit the natural resources in a sustainable way. In this study we attempted to survey the roofs of the buildings with an automatic method as the potential surfaces of placing solar panels. A LiDAR survey was carried out with 12 points/m2 density as the most up-to-date method of surveys and automatic data collection techniques. Our primary goal was to extract the buildings with special regard to the roofs in a 1 km2 study area, in Debrecen. The 3D point cloud generated by the LiDAR was processed with MicroStation TerraScan software, using semi-automatic algorithms. Slopes, aspects and annual solar radiation income of roof planes were determined in ArcGIS10 environment from the digital surface model. Results showed that, generally, the outcome can be regarded as a roof cadaster of the buildings with correct geometry. Calculated solar radiation values revealed those roof planes where the investment for photovoltaic solar panels can be feasible.

The larvae of Hydropsyche cetibeli Malicky & Sipahiler 1993 from the Aegean, Hydropsyche mostarensis Klapálek 1898, endemic of the Balkan Peninsula, and Hydropsyche pygmalion Malicky 2001 endemic of Serifos Island (Cyclades, Greece) are described for the first time. The diagnostic features of the species are described and illustrated, and some information regarding their ecology is included. In addition, a tabular key for larvae of the known Hydropsyche species of Greece and the Aegean Islands is included.

The family Tenuipalpidae from Greece is revised and keys to the Greek species of the gene­ra Aegyptobia, Brevipalpus, Cenopalpus, Pentamerismus and Tenuipalpus are provided. A key to the Greek tenuipalpid genera is also given. The species: Aegyptobia leiahensis, Phytoptipaipusparadoxus, Brevipalpus recki, Pentamerismus coronatus, P. juniperi, P. o­regonensis, Pseudoleptus zelihae, Dolichotetranychus floridanus, Raoiella macfarlanei and Obdulia tamaricis are recorded for the first time. Two new species Aegyptobia karys­tensis and Aegyptobia aliartensis are described and illustrated. Hosts, distributional data and relation to hosts are presented for each species. A revaluation of the world genera and subgenera of the Tenuipalpidae is presented.

The decay of bromine-76 was studied using high resolution HpGe detectors in singles and coincidence mode. Bromine-76 was produced via two reactions: 75 As (α,3 n )76 Br and 76 Se ( p , n )76 Br . The results of these experiments verified the previously reported levels of 76 Se . In addition to the previously described transitions and levels, 37 new γ-rays and 15 new energy levels were found for the first time.
