The aim of this study was to evaluate ex vivo the sealing achieved at simulated lateral canals (SLC) and the quality of filling according to their position in the root canal after using the same filling technique. SLC were created at three levels in 55 teeth and divided into two groups depending on the root canal sealer used (1: BioRoot® RCS, 2: GuttaFlow® bioseal). They filled them with the continuous wave technique and submitted to a diaphanization technique. The samples were analyzed using a magnifying lens (20×), pictures were taken, which proceeded to linear measurement with the ImageJ® program and used a filling score system with five grades (0 to 4, 0 and 1 not acceptable, 2 to 4 acceptable); BioRoot® RCS has got a greater proportion than GuttaFlow® bioseal for SLC filled acceptably at 10 mm from the apex (p < 0.05). The highest proportion of SLC filled acceptably was found in the middle third (6 mm) (p < 0.05), followed by the apical third (3 mm) and the coronal third (10 mm). The difference between apical and coronal third could be significant; BioRoot® RCS has been better than GuttaFlow® bioseal for filling SLC in the coronal third of the teeth. Studies on the characteristics of these cements are missing to explain these differences.

Purpose. To evaluate the percentage content of gutta-percha, sealer, and voids in a filled canal area following three different filling techniques, using microphotographs and Nis Elements® software. Material and Methods. After completing chemomechanical preparation, the teeth (n=48) were randomly divided into three groups (n=16) and filled by either cold lateral condensation (CLC group), the continuous wave technique (EOU group), and the ProTaper® thermoplasticized obturator (PT group). The roots were then sectioned horizontally 2.5, 6.5 and 8.5 mm from the tooth apical foramen. The surface areas of the sealer, voids, and gutta-percha (PGFA percentage of gutta-percha-filled area) were calculated and the results subjected to statistical analysis (Kruskal-Wallis test). Results. The percentage of gutta-percha (PGFA) was lower in the apical third of the canal for the CLC and EOU groups than the PT group. In the middle and the coronal third of the canal, the PGFA value was higher after using thermal techniques (EOU and PT) than cold lateral condensation (CLC). The presence of voids was comparable in the fillings performed using warm and cold gutta-percha obturation at all levels. Conclusion. Although thermal methods of root canal obturation allow higher PGFA values to be obtained than cold lateral condensation, the content of voids is comparable.

The aim of this ex vivo was to investigate if two radiopaque root canal sealers with different formulations would influence the radiographic perception of root canal fillings. The root canals of 48 extracted maxillary canines were prepared and randomly assigned to 3 groups of 16 specimens each. In each group, the root canals were filled by lateral condensation of gutta-percha and one of the tested sealers: Endométhasone, Sealer 26, or a non-radiopaque sealer. A through-and-through void was simulated in half of the specimens from each group (n=8). The buccolingual radiographic images obtained were randomly interpreted for voids existence by a radiologist and an endodontist. The differences in sensitivity and specificity between groups and examiners were compared using, respectively, Fisher's Exact and McNemar tests at 5% significance level. Both radiopaque sealers caused a significant decrease in sensitivity at the coronal part of fillings. The use of Endométhasone increased specificity values for both coronal and apical portions of the root canal fillings. In conclusion, the tested sealers influenced the radiographic perceptions of laterally condensed root canal fillings in a different way.

This study aimed to compare apical microleakage using tooth clearing method between two softened core obturation techniques which are carrier based gutta percha and continuous wave. Samples are maxillary first incisors, with a single root canal. They are devided into three groups of 9 each randomly. The first group is carrier based gutta percha, the second is continuous wave, and the third is lateral condensation as positive control. The teeth were decoronated at the cementoenamel junction, prepared with crown down pressureless technique, and obturated according their group.  All the samples were coated with nail polish except for 2 mm from the apical, and then placed in China Ink for 7 days. After that, the polish were removed and the samples undergone tooth clearing procedure. When the samples had been transparant, they were observed using microscop. Data were collected and analyzed using Anova and Tukey’s post hoc test. The study showed that mean of apical microleakage from continuous wave technique (0.256+0.133) is less than from carrier based gutta percha (0.433+0.173). As the conclusion, there is a significant diffrence (p:0.034) of apical microleakage between continuous wave and carrier based gutta percha (p<0.05).

Introduction. Obturation of the root canal is the final phase of endodontic therapy and it is usually used to assess the quality of endodontic treatment. The objective of this study was to examine the quality of apical sealing of the root canal after application of chemically softened gutta-percha. Material and Methods. Thirty extracted single rooted and multi rooted teeth, divided into two groups according to the material for obturation, were used in the study. After root canal instrumentation using step-back technique, obturation was completed using chemically softened gutta-percha and AH Plus and Apexit paste. The effect of apical sealing was assessed regarding the type of material used for the obturation. After obturation, teeth were coated with two coats of varnish and immersed in 50% solution of silver nitrate for twelve hours, and then longitudinally cut using diamond disc. Linear dye penetration was observed using light microscope and twenty five times magnification. The apical leakage was calculated using the measuring scale, previously mounted on microscope lens. Results. The results showed that the average penetration of silver nitrate in single rooted teeth obturated with the AH Plus paste was 132.8 ?m, while in teeth obturated with Apexit, it was 148.6 ?m. The difference was not statistically significant. Apical leakage in multi rooted teeth obturated with softened gutta-percha and AH Plus paste was 117.3 ?m while in teeth obturated with Apexit, it was 158.5 ?m. The difference was statistically significant. Conclusion. The lowest dye penetration in the apical portion of the canal was observed in multi rooted teeth obturated with AH Plus paste and the highest penetration of silver nitrate was in multi rooted teeth obturated with Apexit paste.

Background: We evaluated the effects of ultrasonic activation on root canal filling quality of the single-cone (SC) obturation technique with calcium silicate sealers and gutta percha cones. Methods: Thirty-six human single-rooted premolars were obturated with gutta percha and sealer. For the continuous wave (CW) group (n = 12), AH Plus with a continuous wave technique was used. The SC group (n = 12) received EndoSequence BC sealer with a single-cone technique. The SCU (SC with the addition of ultrasonic activation) group (n = 12) received the same treatment. Micro-computed tomography was used to scan the teeth, and the void volume within the root canal was evaluated at the apical, middle, and coronal levels. Then cross-sections were observed under a light microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results: Void volume was significantly lower in the SCU group than in the CW and SC groups. There were no statistically significant differences between the CW and SC groups. The SCU group had fewer voids than the CW and SC groups in the coronal and middle third areas. Specimens showed no apparent gaps or voids in any group. SEM images revealed both gap-free and gap-containing regions at different levels in all groups. Conclusions: Single-cone obturation with calcium silicate-based sealers might obtain enhanced filling quality when used with ultrasonic activation.

Aim: To evaluate the effect of irrigation techniques, i.e. different types of irrigation needles, on the quality of cleaning of root canal walls using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Material and Method: The study was conducted on 16 extracted, single-rooted, human teeth. The samples were allocated to two experimental groups depending on the type of the irrigation needle. Conventional needles were used for the irrigation of Group I and laterally perforated ones for Group II. All root canals were instrumented using K files and the Step-back technique. During instrumentation, all samples were irrigated with 2.5 % sodium hypochlorite solution followed by final irrigation with 17 % EDTA for 1 min. After that, all samples were irrigated with 10 ml of distilled water. The roots were, then, sectioned longitudinally and middle one third of each root canal was analyzed using SEM. Quantitative analysis was based on criteria by H?lsmann et al. Results: The obtained results showed that the more efficient removal of debris and the smear layer was accomplished in the group of samples irrigated using laterally perforated needles than conventional needles. The difference between the investigated irrigation techniques were statistically significant (p<0.01). Conclusion: The use of laterally perforated needles for irrigation allows more efficient cleaning of root canal walls, i.e. the removal of debris and the smear layer.

The present study was performed in order to evaluate, by the autoradiographic technique the sealing properties of three root canal sealers, combined with gutta - percha and silver points, in vitro. A total of one hundred and five extracted human, single root teeth were used and divided into five groups according to the filling combinations tested. The teeth were filled, using two techniques, of the single and multiple points. Autoradiographies, using S35, in all instances, were performed and the results obtained were compared with the respective dental radiograms The obtained results lead to the following conclusions: 1. Silver and gutta - percha points may be always combined with sealers. Otherwise the root canal is not adequately sealed. 2. A gutta - percha point, without sealer, produced a superior filling to silver point. 3. It seems possible to obtain a complete obturation of the rootcanal with the combination of gutta - percha and Grosman’s Sealer using the multiple - point technique. 4. It follows in effectivness, the combination of silver point and Grossman’s sealer.5. The combination of gutta - percha point with Zinc - oxide eugenol sealer and chloropercha are the least efficient. 6. Finally it must be stressed that since the conditions of the present study do not correspond exactly to those encountered in vivo, extrapolation of the results obtained, to man has to be performed with caution.

Background Google Glass is a head-mounted device designed in the shape of a pair of eyeglasses equipped with a 5.0-megapixel integrated camera and capable of taking pictures with simple voice commands. Objective The objective of our study was to determine whether Google Glass is fit for veterinary forensic pathology purposes. Methods A total of 44 forensic necropsies of 2 different species (22 dogs and 22 cats) were performed by 2 pathologists; each pathologist conducted 11 necropsies of each species and, for each photographic acquisition, the images were taken with a Google Glass device and a Nikon D3200 digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera. The pictures were collected, divided into 3 groups (based on the external appearance of the animal, organs, and anatomical details), and evaluated by 5 forensic pathologists using a 5-point score system. The parameters assessed were overall color settings, region of interest, sharpness, and brightness. To evaluate the difference in mean duration between necropsies conduced with Google Glass and DSLR camera and to assess the battery consumption of the devices, an additional number of 16 necropsies were performed by the 2 pathologists. In these cases, Google Glass was used for photographic reports in 8 cases (4 dogs and 4 cats) and a Nikon D3200 reflex camera in the other 8 cases. Statistical evaluations were performed to assess the differences in ratings between the quality of the images taken with both devices. Results The images taken with Google Glass received significantly lower ratings than those acquired with reflex camera for all 4 assessed parameters (P<.001). In particular, for the pictures of Groups A and B taken with Google Glass, the sum of frequency of ratings 5 (very good) and 4 (good) was between 50% and 77% for all 4 assessed parameters. The lowest ratings were observed for the pictures of Group C, with a sum of frequency of ratings 5 and 4 of 21.1% (342/1602) for region of interest, 26% (421/1602) for sharpness, 35.5% (575/1602) for overall color settings, and 61.4% (995/1602) for brightness. Furthermore, we found a significant reduction in the mean execution time for necropsy conduced with the Google Glass with respect to the reflex group (P<.001). However, Google Glass drained the battery very quickly. Conclusions These findings suggest that Google Glass is usable in veterinary forensic pathology. In particular, the image quality of Groups A and B seemed adequate for forensic photographic documentation purposes, although the quality was lower than that with the reflex camera. However, in this step of development, the high frequency of poor ratings observed for the pictures of Group C suggest that the device is not suitable for taking pictures of small anatomical details or close-ups of the injuries.
