Various facade designs in modern architecture have expanded the limits of materials and construction methods. In this study, I explored and analyzed structural, decorative, media, and adaptive as representative case studies of facade expression. This study identified the following modern architectural trends for new facade construction methods in South Korea. First, efforts to improve the function of spaces by integrating interior and exterior spaces. Second, attempts for creating decorative facade expressions that stimulate human senses, or expand perceptions and increase aesthetic sense. Third, forming complementary relationships with the city by demonstrating regionality. Fourth, enhancing the performance of facades with adaptive facades. Fifth, helping to expand publicness, such as strengthening and combining the relationships between city, building, and person. Changes and advances in architectural facades will ultimately enhance fundamental aspects of architecture, enriching our daily living through harmony between the traditional and the modern, buildings and humans, and buildings and the environment.

Modern Portuguese architecture has been seen as the result of an eminently empirical and intuitive practice, dissociated from any effort of theoretical structuring. This paper intends to contradict that predominant view, presenting the notion of spatial limit as a subject that earned particular consideration from a younger, more critical and intellectually demanding generation of architects. Firstly, it introduces two notions directly related to limit - ‘extensions of the dwelling’ and ‘transition-space’ - presented in theses by Nuno Portas (b. 1934) and Pedro Vieira de Almeida (1933-2011) respectively, two highly innovative works in the academic panorama of early 1960s. Next, it focuses on the fundamental role each of the notions taken in investigative works that are parallel in time but substantially different. The first, Habitação evolutiva, is a typological study reflecting the spirit of its time by claiming the ‘right to the city’ as the founding principle of a model critical of CIAM urbanism. The second is an essay stemming from a critical reflexion on the work of an eclectic architect that eludes categorization (Raul Lino, 1879-1974) which sheds light on the need for a critical approach to the history of modern architecture.

The research subject of the paper is the center of Graz as a fusion of historical heritage and modern architecture, with its seven landmarks of modern architecture selected here in order to make a short review of this unusual mix. Although the historical center is well known as UNESCO protected district, that may not be damaged or destroyed, the avant-garde shops and bars found their place in the ancient center, complementing it. A contrast of new and the old is also present in the likeness of a fusion of historical heritage and contemporary architecture. This unusual combination made Graz a unique city which could serve as example for the future, how to make contemporary architecture in the middle of historical environment.

The topic of this paper is the functional and design characteristics of multifamily (formerly collective) residential buildings created in the post-war period of Modern architecture of Nis. For the post-war period of intensive and mass construction of residential buildings, a time classification of constructed buildings was performed, and they are classified into two categories. The first category includes buildings built in the 1950s, in the period of the ?mature? Modern architecture, which is a continuation of modern architecture of Nis between the two world wars. The second category consists of residential buildings created in the late 1960s and 1970s, in the period of the late (industrial) Modern architecture of Nis. In this paper, two representative examples of residential and commercial buildings from the mentioned periods were selected, both built on the 14. Oktobar square, in the central core of the city of Nis. As typological representatives of the mentioned periodizations of construction, the buildings will be analyzed in the form of two case studies.

This chapter examines the ways that monks in Thailand make sense of and make use of mindfulness in the course of their everyday lives at Thai monasteries. It focuses on two monks in particular as representative case studies: a rural wandering thudong monk in a remote monastery in “Mae Jaeng” outside of Chiang Mai, and an urban monk at the busy university monastery of Wat Suan Dok in the city. In relating the experiences of these two monks it explains some of the most common definitions of mindfulness in Thailand, as raluk dai (‘recollecting the mind’), along with some of the most common affective uses and some of the most common meditative practices to cultivate mindfulness. It also introduces some of the most well-known textual renderings of mindfulness in the region, as drawing from Thai iterations of Pali-language texts.

City centers worldwide are perceived as essential parts of the city, where city memories are preserved and its identity is expressed. They are planned to satisfy the functional requirements and pleasurable qualities of the city. Under the accelerating urbanization of the modern city, several challenges face these centers including demographic, economic, and environmental challenges. This requires a continuous and incremental urban development process based on clear strategy and action plans. Thus, this study focuses on urban development strategies of city centers, with a focus on Rafah city located in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian Territories. The geographic location of this city near the Palestinian-Egyptian borders makes it a promising commercial city at local and regional levels. Thus, the current situation of Rafah city center has been analyzed, and several development strategies have been proposed. This has been done through a field survey based on observation and a questionnaire directed to city center users. It has been found that there is a great potential of Rafah city center to be developed as a commercial center. In this regard, several strategies and required actions have been proposed in the fields of transportation, environmental quality, shopping activities, investment opportunities, and visual perception.

В данной статье с опорой на тексты ряда исследователей раскрывается, что в современной архитектуре коллаж может использоваться и как метод, и как модель города. Автором выдвинут тезис о том, что одновременное использование коллажа по этим двум направлениям способно связать город и построения зданий в единую умозрительную логику, обеспечивая при этом целостность общего и его частей. In this article, based on the texts of a number of researchers, it is revealed that in Modern architecture a collage can be used both as a method and as a model of a city. The author put forward the thesis that the simultaneous use of a collage in these two areas is able to link the city and the construction of buildings into a single speculative logic, while ensuring the integrity of the general and its parts.

This chapter considers how Wolof, an Atlantic language spoken in Senegal, has become an important lingua franca, and how French has contributed to the ascent of Wolof. The nature of social relations between Africans and French in cities along the Atlantic coast in the 18th and 19th centuries were such that a prestigious urban way of speaking Wolof that made liberal use of French borrowings became the language of the city. As an index of urban belonging, opportunity, and modernity, Wolof was viewed as a useful language, a trend that has continued up to the present. Four case studies illustrate how the use of Wolof facilitates mobility for speakers of other languages in Senegal. By drawing a distinction between the formal and informal language sectors, this chapter offers a more realistic view of everyday language practices in Senegal, where Wolof is the dominant language.

There is increasing evidence that ridehailing and other private-for-hire (PfH) services such as taxis and limousines are diverting trips from transit services. One question that arises is where and when PfH services are filling gaps in transit services and where they are competing with transit services that are publicly subsidized. Using weekday trip-level information for trips originating in or destined for the city center of Portland, OR from PfH transportation services (taxis, transportation network companies, limousines) and transit trip data collected from OpenTripPlanner, this study investigated the temporal and spatial differences in travel durations between actual PfH trips and comparable transit trips (the same origin–destination and time of day). This paper contributes to this question and to a growing body of research about the use of ridehailing and other on-demand services. Specifically, it provides a spatial and temporal analysis of the demand for PfH transportation using an actual census of trips for a given 2 week period. The comparison of trip durations of actual PfH trips to hypothetical transit trips for the same origin–destination pairs into or out of the central city gives insights for policy making around pricing and other regulatory frameworks that could be implemented in time and space.
