Several studies have reported that diet’s inflammatory potential is related to chronic diseases such as cancer, but its relationship with cervical cancer risk has not been studied yet. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®) and cervical cancer risk among Korean women. This study consisted of 764 cases with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN)1, 2, 3, or cervical cancer, and 729 controls from six gynecologic oncology clinics in South Korea. The DII was computed using a validated semiquantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Odds ratios and 95% CI were calculated using multinomial logistic regression. Higher DII scores were associated with higher cervical carcinogenesis risk. A significant association was observed between the DII and risk among CIN2/3 [Odds Ratio (OR) = 3.14; 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) = 1.57–6.29] and cervical cancer patients (OR = 1.98; 95% CI = 1.01–3.88). Among Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)-positive women, a significant association was found between DII and cervical carcinoma risk with CIN2/3 (OR = 5.65; 95% CI = 1.38–23.2). Moreover, women with CIN2/3 and cervical cancer showed a significant association with proinflammatory diet in people without of physical activity (OR = 3.79; 95% CI = 1.81–7.93). These findings suggest that high intake of proinflammatory diets is associated with increased risk of cervical carcinogenesis among women with CIN2/3. Further evaluation in future studies to confirm this association is warranted.

Both inflammation and poor nutritional status are major risk factors of frailty, and the dietary inflammatory index (DII) has been suggested as being associated with the risk of frailty. The present study aimed to investigate whether DII scores were positively associated with the risk of frailty in older individuals, particularly those with poor nutritional status. In total, 321 community-dwelling older individuals aged 70–85 years were recruited and categorized as non-frail, pre-frail, and frail according to the Cardiovascular Health Study index. DII scores were calculated based on 24-h dietary recall, and nutritional status was assessed using the Mini Nutritional Assessment. Multinomial logistic regression analysis showed that DII scores were positively associated with the risk of frailty in older individuals (odds ratio, OR 1.64, 95% confidence interval, 95% CI 1.25–2.17), particularly those with poor nutritional status (OR 1.68, 95% CI 1.21–2.34). Among the frailty criteria, weight loss (OR 1.29, 95% CI 1.03–1.60), low walking speed (OR 1.33, 95% CI 1.10–1.61), and low grip strength (OR 1.34, 95% CI 1.13–1.60) were associated with DII scores. In addition, the optimal DII cut-off score for frailty was ≥0.93 (sensitivity 71%; specificity: 72%; area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, AUC = 0.792). The present study showed that a pro-inflammatory diet was associated with increased risk of frailty, particularly in older individuals with poor nutritional status. Future randomized controlled trials with a low DII diet for the prevention of frailty are needed to confirm our finding.

Objective. We aimed to derive a more precise estimation of the associations between human leukocyte antigens DP (HLA-DP) gene polymorphisms and cervical cancer risk by meta-analysis. Methods. PubMed, EMBASE, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang databases were systematically searched to identify studies investigating the relationship between HLA-DP gene polymorphisms and cervical cancer. The associations between them were evaluated by pooled OR and 95% CI. Results. A total of 11 studies including 5008 cases and 9322 controls with 11 HLA-DP alleles were included in the current meta-analysis. Results. The results showed that HLA-DPB1⁎03:01 was significantly associated with an increased risk of cervical cancer (OR=1.252, 95%CI: 1.116-1.403, Pz=0.001), while HLA-DPB1⁎04:02 and HLA-DP rs3117027 G allele were significantly associated with a decreased risk of cervical cancer (OR=0.744, 95%CI: 0.652-0.848, Pz=0.001; OR=0.790, 95%CI: 0.745-0.837, Pz=0.001), and HLA-DP rs9277535 G allele was significantly associated with a decreased risk of cervical cancer in Asia (OR=0.802, 95%CI: 0.753-0.855, Pz=0.001). Subgroup analyses based on race system showed that HLA-DPB1⁎13:01 was significantly associated with an increased risk of cervical cancer in Asia (OR=1.834, 95%CI: 1.107-3.039, Pz=0.019). No significant association was established for the HLA-DP following alleles: DPB1⁎02:01, DPB1⁎02:02, DPB1⁎04:01, DPB1⁎05:01, rs4282438, and rs3077. Conclusion. HLA-DP gene polymorphisms (HLA-DPB1⁎03:01, DPB1⁎04:02, DPB1⁎13:01, rs9277535, and rs3117027) were significantly associated with cervical cancer.

AbstractPrevious studies have investigated the association between dietary inflammatory potential and the development of cancer. For breast cancer the results have been equivocal. The present study aimed to investigate whether higher Dietary Inflammatory IndexTM (DII) scores were associated with increased risk of breast cancer among Chinese women. A total of 867 cases and 824 controls were recruited into the present case–control study from September 2011 to February 2016. DII scores were computed based on baseline dietary intake assessed by a validated 81-item FFQ. The OR and 95 % CI were assessed by multivariable logistic regression after adjusting for various potential confounders. DII scores in this study ranged from −5·87 (most anti-inflammatory score) to +5·71 (most proinflammatory score). A higher DII score was associated with a higher breast cancer risk (adjusted ORquartile 4 v. 1 2·28; 95 % CI 1·71, 3·03; adjusted ORcontinuous 1·40; 95 %CI 1·25, 1·39). In stratified analyses, positive associations also were observed except for underweight women or women with either oestrogen receptor+ or progesterone receptor+ status (but not both). Results from this study indicated that higher DII scores, corresponding to more proinflammatory diets, were positively associated with breast cancer risk among Chinese women.

AbstractDiet has been shown to have an effect on both inflammation and oesophageal cancer. This study investigated the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII®) and the risk of oesophageal cancer in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. A case–control study was conducted during 2008–2009 in Urumqi and Shihezi. DII scores were calculated based on dietary intake assessed by a validated FFQ administered to 359 incident oesophageal cancer patients and 380 hospital-based controls. Higher DII scores indicate more pro-inflammatory diets. Logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the association between DII scores and oesophageal cancer risk. Oesophageal cancer patients had a significantly higher median DII score (−0·35; interquartile range (IQR)=−2·25, 1·86) than that of controls (−1·41; IQR −3·07, 0·40). Multivariable logistic analysis revealed a positive association between higher DII scores and oesophageal cancer risk (ORQuartile 4 v. 1 2·55; 95 % CI 1·61, 4·06; Ptrend<0·001). A pro-inflammatory diet appears to be associated with an increased risk of oesophageal cancer in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Specific carcinogenic mechanisms are discussed. Accumulating evidence, to which the study contributes, indicates that encouraging the intake of more anti-inflammatory foods may be a strategy to protect against oesophageal cancer in this high-risk area of China.

ObjectivesPrevious studies investigating the association between interleukin 1β (IL-1β) and its receptor antagonist (IL-1RN) polymorphism and cervical cancer risk have reported controversial results. Thus, we examined these associations by performing meta-analyses.Methods and MaterialsFourteen studies testing the association between IL-1β and/or IL-1RN gene polymorphisms and cervical cancer were examined: 5 studies of IL-1β–511C/T, 3 studies of IL-1β–31T/C, and 6 studies of IL-1RN. Overall and ethnicity-specific summary odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for cervical cancer associated with these polymorphisms were estimated using fixed- and random-effects models. Heterogeneity and publication bias were evaluated.ResultsMeta-analysis of all 6 studies showed variant genotypes of IL-1RN to be associated with an elevated cervical cancer risk (RN2/RN2 vs RN1/RN1: OR, 2.64; 95% CI, 1.29–5.40; recessive: OR, 2.15; 95% CI, 1.06–4.38; dominant: OR, 1.60; 95% CI, 1.07–2.38). Combined analysis indicated that IL-1β–511C/T polymorphism was also associated with increased risk of cervical cancer (TT vs CC: OR, 1.56; 95% CI, 1.22–1.99; CT vs CC: OR, 1.61; 95% CI, 1.31–1.99; dominant: OR, 1.60; 95% CI, 1.31–1.95). No significant association of IL-1β–31T/C and cervical cancer risk was detected. There was no evidence of publication bias.ConclusionsThis meta-analysis suggested that the IL-1RN and IL-1β–511C/T polymorphisms may contribute to genetic susceptibility of cervical cancer. More studies are needed to further evaluate the role of the IL-1β–31T/C polymorphism in the etiology of cancer.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) exists as more than 100 genotypes. It is not well-established whether the different HPV types interfere with infection or pathogenesis by each other. Possible interactions in cervical carcinogenesis between infection with the most common HPV types (6, 11, 16, 18 and 33) were studied in a seroepidemiological case- control study of 218 women with primary untreated cervical cancer and 219 healthy age-matched control women. As previously shown, HPV-16 seropositivity was associated with cervical cancer risk [odds ratio (OR), 2·39], but HPV-16 was not associated with cervical cancer risk among HPV-6 seropositive women (OR, 1·0). The relative excess risk due to interaction between HPV-6 and -16 was −2·35 (95% confidence interval, −0·04 to −4·65), indicating significant antagonism. The results suggest that infection with HPV-6 may interfere with HPV-16-associated cervical carcinogenesis.

The objective of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis to systematically summarize and investigate the association of miRNA-124 rs531564, miRNA-218 rs11134527, miRNA-146a rs2910164, miRNA-196a2 rs11614913, and miRNA-499 rs3746444 polymorphisms with cervical cancer. A systematic review was performed to identify relevant studies using Embase and PubMed databases. A chi-square-based Q -test combined with the inconsistency index ( I 2 ) was used to check the heterogeneity between studies. A total of six case-control studies on rs2910164 and rs11614913, 4 studies on rs3746444 and rs11134527, and three studies on rs531564 were included. No evidence of association was found between miR-146a rs2910164, miR-196a2 rs11614913, miRNA-499 rs3746444, and miR-218 rs11134527 polymorphisms and cervical cancer risk in all the genetic models. The miR-124 rs531564 polymorphism was associated with a statistically increased risk of cervical cancer in a homozygote model (CC vs. GG: OR = 2.87 , 95% CI: 1.40-5.91, P H = 0.887 ), dominant model (GC/CC vs. GG: OR = 1.38 , 95% CI: 1.07-1.80, P H = 0.409 ), and recessive model (CC vs. GC/GG: OR = 2.26 , 95% CI: 1.58-3.23, P H = 0.979 ). However, this finding should be interpreted with caution for limited samples and heterogeneity. Large-scale and well-designed studies are needed to validate our result.

Several epidemiological studies have shown that there are consistent positive associations between dietary inflammatory index (DII®) and cancer incidence in Western populations. However, few DII-cancer studies have been conducted in East Asian populations. In a large cohort representative of the general Korean population, we investigated whether the DII is associated with overall cancer risk. A total of 163,660 participants (56,781 males and 106,879 females) had evaluable data for analyses. This follow-up study was carried out over the course of 7.9 years. DII was calculated based on Semi-Quantitative Food-Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) data for 106 food items. Cancers were self-reported based on notification by the participants’ medical doctors. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). After the follow-up, 1,643 cases of cancer (520 males and 1123 females) had developed. In a fully adjusted model, women in the highest DII quintile showed a 44% increased risk of getting cancer (HRQ5vsQ1 = 1.44; 95% CI = 1.14–1.82; p-trend = 0.0006), while men showed no apparent association (HRQ5vsQ1 = 0.80; 95% CI = 0.58–1.10). These results indicate that in Korean women, a more pro-inflammatory diet is associated with a higher risk of cancer incidence.
