The Al2O3 + TiO2 coatings are of the interest of surface technology and tribology due to their good wear resistance and enhanced toughness comparing to pure Al2O3 coatings. However, the detailed effect of the used feedstock powder, is often neglected. Here, this work focuses on the deposition of Al2O3 + 13 wt % TiO2 coatings by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) method as well as on their microstructure, phase composition and selected mechanical properties, in the reference to the route of the powder feedstock preparation. The commercial powder Metco 6221 in agglomerated and sintered form was used as a feedstock material during spraying, due to the fact that, so far, sintered or cladded powders are the most studied ones. The 2k + 1 spray experiment allowed to evaluate the influence of two variables, namely spray distance and torch linear velocity, on the coating microstructure. Afterwards, the coating adhesion was measured by the means of pull-off test. The correlations between Vickers microhardness, fracture toughness (Kc) as well as the coating morphology and phase composition were investigated. Finally, the dry sliding wear resistance was studied by using Ball-on-Disc method.

W(100-x)%Cx% coatings with different tungsten and carbon contents were deposited by unbalanced magnetron sputtering. The microstructures and mechanical properties of the W(100-x)%C x% coatings was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nanoindentation and adhesion testing techniques. The tribological performance of the coatings was investigated using a pin-on-disc trobometer under dry conditions. Experimental results indicated that coating microstructure, mechanical properties and wear resistance varied according to the tungsten and carbon contents of the coatings. The W72%C28% coating had the highest hardness/elastic modulus (H/E) ratio. In the ball-on-disc wear tests, it was found that the W72%C28% coating exhibited the best wear resistance.

In this work, the alumina (Al2O3) and alumina-titania coatings with different contents of TiO2, i.e., Al2O3 + 13 wt.% TiO2 and Al2O3 + 40 wt.% TiO2, were studied. The coatings were produced by means of powder and liquid feedstock thermal spray processes, namely atmospheric plasma spraying (APS), suspension plasma spraying (SPS) and suspension high-velocity oxygen fuel spraying (S-HVOF). The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of spray feedstocks characteristics and spray processes on the coating morphology, microstructure and phase composition. The results revealed that the microstructural features were clearly related both to the spray processes and chemical composition of feedstocks. In terms of phase composition, in Al2O3 (AT0) and Al2O3 + 13 wt.% TiO2 (AT13) coatings, the decrease in α-Al2O3, which partially transformed into γ-Al2O3, was the dominant change. The increased content of TiO2 to 40 wt.% (AT40) involved also an increase in phases related to the binary system Al2O3-TiO2 (Al2TiO5 and Al2−xTi1+xO5). The obtained results confirmed that desired α-Al2O3 or α-Al2O3, together with rutile-TiO2 phases, may be preserved more easily in alumina-titania coatings sprayed by liquid feedstocks.

Atmospheric Plasma Spraying (APS) enables deposition of coatings from different materials, including those based on Al2O3 and TiO2. In this work, Al2O3 + 40 wt.% TiO2 coatings were tested. The relationships between mechanical properties, microstructure and spraying parameters (namely: spraying distance and torch scan velocity) were investigated. Commercial -45 + 5 μm powders in agglomerated as- produced state were sprayed onto the stainless steel 1.4301 substrates. The aim of the study was to determine the adhesion, microhardness and roughness of coatings but also to characterize their microstructure. It was observed that coatings sprayed from shorter distance were well melted and revealed good adhesion, but at the same time they were more porous and of lower microhardness than those deposited from the longer spraying distance.

The Al2O3+TiO2 coatings are of the interest of surface engineering due to their high hardness and wear resistance but also increased toughness, when compared to pure Al2O3 ones. This article describes the deposition of Al2O3+3 wt.% TiO2 coatings by Atmospheric Plasma Spraying (APS) technique. The commercial AMI 6300.1 powder (-45 + 22 μm) was used as a feedstock. The 2k+1 spraying experiment, based on two variables, namely spray distance and torch velocity, was designed. The samples were characterized in the terms of morphology, microstructure, microhardness and roughness. It was observed that the shorter spray distance resulted in lower porosity, higher microhardness and lower roughness of coatings.

The Cylinder liner is one of the working environment of the worst parts in internal combustion engine ,it is required to have good wear resistance, corrosion resistance, resistance to high temperature and high pressure shock, etc. After tests showed, better comprehensive mechanical properties of cylinder liner is got by using Plasma Spray composite ceramic nanometer coating technology, and after laser remelting treatment.

Dry sliding wear and friction tests of CrN coating on two types of aluminum alloy substrates, 6061 Al and 7075 Al, deposited by arc ion plating were performed with a ball-on-disk tribometer. The effects of normal load and the mechanical properties of the substrate on the friction coefficient and wear resistance of CrN coating were investigated. The worn surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscopy. The results show that surface microhardness of CrN-coated 7075 Al is higher than that of CrN-coated 6061 Al. With an increase in normal load, wear volume increases, while the friction coefficient decreases. The friction coefficient of CrN-coated 6061 Al is higher than that of CrN-coated 7075 Al, while the wear resistance of CrN-coated 6061 Al is lower than that of the CrN-coated 7075 Al. This indicates that the substrate mechanical properties have strong influence on the friction coefficient and wear of CrN coating. The main wear mechanism was fragments of CrN coating, caused by apparent plastic deformation of substrate during wear tests.
