Transition-metal nitride coating used to protect the electronic connector devices in marine environment is required to have high electrical conductivity and good corrosion resistance. This study synthesized a novel CrN–Pt coating with a dense growth texture. Pt addition induced a pronounced increase in electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance. The resistivity decreased from 0.0149 Ohm·cm in the CrN coating to 0.000472 Ohm·cm in the CrN–Pt coating, while the corrosion current density decreased from 24 nA/cm2 in the CrN coating to 6.3 nA/cm2 in the CrN–Pt coating. The results of the above studies confirm that Pt doping has significant advantages in improving the electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance of nitride coatings for potential applications in the marine environment.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of hybrid surface treatment composed of plasma nitriding (PN) and chromium nitride (CrN) coating on the friction-wear properties, the adhesion strength of AISI 316L stainless steel. The CrN coatings with the thickness of 1.0 µm and 2.2 µm were formed on the surfaces of both substrates with plasma nitriding (PN/CrN coating) and without plasma nitriding (CrN coating). The plasma nitriding, CrN coatings, and the hybrid treatment improved markedly the friction-wear properties of the stainless steel. The plasma nitriding generated a hardened layer between the soft substrate and the thin hard coatings and improved markedly friction-wear properties of the CrN-coated stainless steel and the adhesion of the CrN coatings.

The present work aims to study the impact of O and N addition on Cr-sputtered coatings on plastic (polycarbonate, PC) used in automobile parts, as a promisor alternative for auto part metallization, while eliminating the usage of toxic hexavalent chromium. The coatings were deposited using DC magnetron sputtering from a single pure Cr target in a reactive atmosphere (N2 and/or O2). The deposition of the coatings was performed maintaining the total pressure constant and close to 1 Pa by tuning Ar pressure while reactive gases were added. The target current density was kept at JW = 20 mA·cm−2. Structural characterization revealed a mixture of α-Cr, δ-Cr, β-Cr2N, and CrN crystalline structures as well as amorphous oxides. The coating hardness ranged from 9 GPa for the CrON coating to 15 GPa for the CrN coating. All deposited coatings showed a particularly good interface adhesion; adjusting the amount of O and N made it possible to tune the optical properties of the Cr-based coatings as desired. The promising results open future industrialization of sputtered Cr-based coatings for automotive industries.

AISI 420 stainless steel is widely used in applications where wear and corrosion resistance are required. However, the heat treatment and nitriding process can drastically reduce the corrosion resistance of this stainless steel. This article focuses on investigating the influence of steel substrate and gas nitriding efficiency at two temperatures of 520 oC and 550 oC on some properties of CrN coating. The experiments were carried out to evaluate the surface hardness, microstructure and phase composition of nitrided layers. The coating adhesion and load capacity of the coating were performed according to VDI 3198 standard. Electrochemical testing was performed in a solution of 3.5% NaCl and then using the Tafel method to determine the corrosion current and corrosion potential. The thickness of CrN and CrN/CrN coating was 1.6 μm and 3 μm, respectively. The study showed that the corrosion resistance of coatings fabricated through duplex technology was affected not only by the normal defects but also by the porosity on the nitrided surface. The corrosion resistance of multilayer duplex coating was improved compare with mono-layer duplex coating due to its ability to cover and reduce pores and pitting defects.
