Calcium phosphate (CaPh) coatings are considered promising surface treatments for Mg-based implants. Normally, the phase conversion process of CaPh compounds occurs during immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF) and allows the easy penetration of a corrosive medium. To solve the issue, pre-treatment is often performed, creating an effective barrier that further improves the corrosion resistance of the underlying Mg. In the present work three pre-treatments including hydrothermal treatment, anodization, and plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) were performed on pure Mg prior to CaPh deposition. Results indicated that the composition, morphology, and thickness of the CaPh coatings were strongly influenced by the pre-treatments. Dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) was formed on PEO surface, whilst DCPD and hydroxyapatite (HA) were deposited on hydrothermally prepared and anodized surfaces. HA could be deposited on the studied samples during immersion in SBF. The electrochemical impedance spectrum indicated that CaPh coating combined with PEO pre-treatment had the highest corrosion resistance at 120 h due to the superior barrier properties conferred by the PEO layer.

Nanostructured conversion coating of Al-Mg alloy was obtained via the surface treatment with zirconium titanium salt solution at 25°C for 10 min. The zirconium titanium salt solution is composed of tannic acid 1.00 g·L−1, K2ZrF60.75 g·L−1, NaF 1.25 g·L−1, MgSO41.0 g/L, and tetra-n-butyl titanate (TBT) 0.08 g·L−1. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR) were used to characterize the composition and structure of the obtained conversion coating. The morphology of the conversion coating was obtained by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results exhibit that the zirconium titanium salt conversion coating of Al-Mg alloy contains Ti, Zr, Al, F, O, Mg, C, Na, and so on. The conversion coating with nm level thickness is smooth, uniform, and compact. Corrosion resistance of conversion coating was evaluated in the 3.5 wt.% NaCl electrolyte through polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS). Self-corrosion current density on the nanostructured conversion coating of Al-Mg alloy is9.7×10-8A·cm-2, which is only 2% of that on the untreated aluminum-magnesium alloy. This result indicates that the corrosion resistance of the conversion coating is improved markedly after chemical conversion treatment.

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) regulations demand for an expedient discovery of a Cr(VI)-free alternative corrosion protection for light alloys even though the green alternatives might never be as cheap as current harmful technologies. In the present work, flash- plasma electrolytic oxidation coatings (FPEO) with the process duration < 90 s are developed on AZ31B alloy in varied mixtures of silicate-, phosphate-, aluminate-, and fluoride-based alkaline electrolytes implementing current density and voltage limits. The overall evaluation of the coatings’ anticorrosion performance (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), neutral salt spray test (NSST), paintability) shows that from nine optimized FPEO recipes, two (based on phosphate, fluoride, and aluminate or silicate mixtures) are found to be an adequate substitute for commercially used Cr(VI)-based conversion coating (CCC). The FPEO coatings with the best corrosion resistance consume a very low amount of energy (~1 kW h m−2 µm−1). It is also found that the lower the energy consumption of the FPEO process, the better the corrosion resistance of the resultant coating. The superb corrosion protection and a solid environmentally friendly outlook of PEO-based corrosion protection technology may facilitate the economic justification for industrial end-users of the current-consuming process as a replacement of the electroless CCC process.

In the present investigation, the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process was employed to form aluminum oxide coating layers to enhance corrosion resistance properties of high-strength aluminum alloys. The formed protective coating layers were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and characterized by several electrochemical techniques, including open circuit potential (OCP), linear potentiodynamic polarization (LP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results were reported in comparison with the bare 6061-O aluminum alloy to determine the corrosion performance of the coated 6061-O alloy. The PEO-treated aluminum alloy showed substantially higher corrosion resistance in comparison with the untreated substrate material. A relationship was found between the coating formation stage, process parameters and the thickness of the oxide-formed layers, which has a measurable influence on enhancing corrosion resistance properties. This study demonstrates promising results of utilizing PEO process to enhance corrosion resistance properties of high-strength aluminum alloys and could be recommended as a method used in industrial applications.

In order to explore the hydrothermal growth mechanism of hydroxyapatite (HA) coating on fluorinated magnesium alloy, the changes of morphology, composition and crystal phase of the calcium phosphate coating during the hydrothermal treatment were studied. And the change of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of the coating specimen of different hydrothermal treatment time was discussed to further understanding the change of the coating structure. The results demonstrated that calcium phosphate could rapidly nucleate on fluorinated AZ31 magnesium alloy. The crystal phase of calcium phosphate coating was mainly octacalcium phosphate (OCP) at the early stage of hydrothermal treatment. Then the content of OCP decreased and the content of HA increased with hydrothermal time. The coating consisted of only HA after hydrothermal treatment for about 4h. The HA coating composed of rod-like crystals exhibited an obvious double layer structure. The rod-like crystals of inner layer arranged into dense bundles and the rod-like crystals of outer layer arranged into loose chrysanthemum-like clusters. Fluoride conversion layer acted as an intermediate transition layer to connect magnesium alloy and HA coating into a whole. The results of immersion test in simulated body fluid demonstrated that HA crystals dissolved slowly. No peeling occurred of HA coating during the 12 days' immersion. Pitting corrosion was still the mainly corrosion mode of magnesium alloy substrate due to the electrolyte infiltration during the immersion.

The fabrication of a ceramic coating on the metallic substrate is usually applied to achieve the improved performance of the material. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is one of the most promising methods to reach this performance, mostly wear and corrosion resistance. Traditional PEO is carried out in an aqueous electrolyte. However, the current work showed the fabrication and characterization of a ceramic coating using PEO in molten salt which was used to avoid disadvantages in system heating-up and the formation of undesired elements in the coating. Aluminum 7075 alloy was subjected to the surface treatment using PEO in molten nitrate salt. Various current frequencies were applied in the process. Coating investigations revealed its surface porous structure and the presence of two oxide layers, α-Al2O3 and γ-Al2O3. Microhardness measurements and chemical and phase examinations confirmed these results. Potentiodynamic polarization tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed the greater corrosion resistance for the coated alloy. Moreover, the corrosion resistance was increased with the current frequency of the PEO process.

Novel ZnIn2S4/FeUiO-66 (ZFeU) photocatalyst with different proportion of FeUiO-66 has been successfully prepared by a facile one-pot solvothermal reaction. The as-synthesized nanocomposites have been thoroughly characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) characterization, photoluminescence (PL) analysis and electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS). The photocatalytic performance of ZFeU nanocomposites for the photodegradation of RhB under visible light irradiation was better than that of ZnIn2S4 and FeUiO-66 alone. The experiment results showed the 20% ZFeU nanocomposites had the best photocatalytic properties. At the same time, a probable mechanism was discussed and it was believed that introduction of FeUiO-66 on ZnIn2S4 would minimize the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, leading to the enhancement of the photocatalytic activity.
