Laser cladding coating has many advantages in surface modification, such as a small heat-affected zone, and good metallurgical bonding. However, some serious problems such as pores, and poor forming quality still exist in the coating. To suppress these problems, a novel process of ultrasonic vibration-assisted laser cladding process was adopted to in-situ synthesize TiC/TiB composite ceramic coating on the surface of titanium alloy. Results showed that the introduction of ultrasonic vibration effectively improved the surface topography of the coating, reduced the number of pores in the coating, refined the crystal grains of the coating, decreased the residual tensile stress in the coating, and increased the micro-hardness of the coating. The tribological properties of the coating were significantly improved by the ultrasonic vibration, the wear resistance of the coating fabricated with ultrasonic vibration at power of 400 W increased about 1.2 times compared with the coating fabricated without ultrasonic vibration, and the friction coefficient decreased by 50%.

A SiC ceramic coating was prepared on carbon/carbon composites by pack cementation. The phase composition and microstructure of the coated specimens were characterized using X-ray diffraction instrument and scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the mass-loss percentage of the coated specimen was 9.5% after being oxidized for 20 h. The oxidation failure of the SiC ceramic coating at 1773 K was analysed by non-destructive X-ray computed tomography. The effective self-healing of cracks with widths below 12.7 μm introduced during the coating preparation process and generated while the specimens cooled down from the high oxidation temperature prevented the oxidation of carbon/carbon composites. X-ray computed tomography was used to obtain three-dimensional images revealing internal damage caused by spallation and open holes on the coating. Stress induced by heating and cooling caused the formation, growth and coalescence of cracks, which in turn led to exfoliation of the coating and subsequent failure of oxidation protection.

Abstract To further enhance the corrosion resistance of chemically bonded phosphate ceramic coating, TiO2 was grafted on the surface of GO to enhance the interfacial adhesion between GO and the coating. SEM results show that the presence of TiO2 on GO creates a good interfacial adhesion between GO and the coating. In addition, EIS experiments were carried out to investigate the performance of the coatings on the corrosion resistance. The result indicates that the corrosion resistance is enhanced with the introduction of GO-TiO2 hybrid material. Besides the influence of GO on the corrosion resistance, the good interfacial adhesion between GO and the coating with the presence of TiO2 hybrid material can consume more fracture energy to stop crack propagation, which leads to the high corrosion resistance.
