As an integral part of our culture and way of life, language is intricately related to the migrations of people. To understand whether and how migration shapes language formation processes, we examine the dynamics of the naming game with migrating agents. (i) When all agents may migrate, the dynamics generates effective surface tension that drives the coarsening. Such behaviour is very robust and appears for a wide range of densities of agents and their migration rates. (ii) However, when only multilingual agents are allowed to migrate, monolingual islands are typically formed. In such a case, when the migration rate is sufficiently large, the majority of agents acquire a common language that spontaneously emerges with no indication of surface-tension-driven coarsening. Relatively slow coarsening that takes place in a dense static population is very fragile, and an arbitrarily small migration rate can most likely divert the system towards the quick formation of monolingual islands. Our work shows that migration influences language formation processes, but additional details such as density or mobility of agents are needed to more precisely specify this influence.

The main contention of Shooting a Tiger is that hunting during the colonial period was not merely a recreational activity, but a practice intimately connected with imperial governance. The book positions shikar or hunting at the heart of colonial rule by demonstrating that, for the British in India, it served as a political, practical, and symbolic apparatus in the consolidation of power and rule during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book analyses early colonial hunting during the Company period, and then surveys different aspects of hunting during the high imperial decades in the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book draws upon an impressive array of archival material and uses a wide range of evidence to support its contentions. It examines hunting at a variety of social and ethnic levels—military, administrative, elite, princely India, Indian professional hunters, and in terms of Indian auxiliaries and (sometimes) resisters. It also deals with different geographical contexts—the plains, the mountains, north and south India. The exclusive privilege of hunting exercised by the ruling classes, following colonial forest legislation, continued to be extended to the Indian princes who played a critical role in sustaining the lavish hunts that became the hallmark of the late nineteenth-century British Raj. Hunting was also a way of life in colonial India, undertaken by officials and soldiers alike alongside their everyday duties, necessary for their mental sustenance and vital for the smooth operation of the colonial administration. There are also two final chapters on conservation, particularly the last chapter focusing on two British hunter-turned-conservationists, Jim Corbett and Colonel Richard Burton.

This study investigates the dependency of meander lateral migration rates on the spatial distribution of channel centerline curvature in both synthetic and real meandering rivers. It employs Machine Learning techniques (hereafter ML) to relate observed local lateral meander migration rates with the local and the upstream/downstream values of the centerline curvature. To achieve this goal, it was primarily essential to identify the feasibility of using ML in the meandering river's morphodynamics. We then determined the ability of ML to predict the excess near bank velocity based a set of input data using different regression techniques (linear and polynomial, Stochastic Gradient Descent, Multi-Layer Perceptron, and Support Vector Machine). We then moved forward to study the upstream-downstream influence on local migration rate. Synthetic meandering river planforms, as obtained through the planform evolution model of Bogoni et al. (2017), which is based on Zolezzi and Seminara (2001) meander flow model, were used as test cases for the calibration and check of the different adopted ML algorithms. The calibrated algorithms were then applied to multi-temporal information on meander planform dynamics obtained through the PyRiS software (Monegaglia et al., 2018), to quantify to which extent the upstream and downstream distribution of meander centerline curvature affects the local meander migration rate in real rivers.

References

1- Zolezzi, G., & Seminara, G. Cavity flow around a wedge with rounded edges was studied, taking into account the surface tension effect and the Brillouin–Villat criterion of cavity detachment. The liquid compressibility and viscosity were ignored. An analytical solution was obtained in parametric form by applying the integral hodograph method. This method gives the possibility of deriving analytical expressions for complex velocity and for potential, both defined in a parameter plane. An expression for the curvature of the cavity boundary was obtained analytically. By using the dynamic boundary condition on the cavity boundary, an integral equation in the velocity modulus was derived. The particular case of zero surface tension is a special case of the solution. The surface tension effect was computed over a wide range of the Weber number for various degrees of cavitation development. Numerical results are presented for the flow configuration, the drag force coefficient, and the position of cavity detachment. It was found that for each radius of the edges, there exists a critical Weber number, below which the iterative solution process fails to converge, so a steady flow solution cannot be computed. This critical Weber number increases as the radius of the edge decreases. As the edge radius tends to zero, the critical Weber number tends to infinity, or a steady cavity flow cannot be computed at any finite Weber number in the case of sharp wedge edges. This shows some limitations of the model based on the Brillouin–Villat criterion of cavity detachment.

The purpose of the article is to analyze the mechanism of the emergence and functioning of the discourse of neurosis of Vasyl Stefanyk on the material of the artistic and biographical novel by S. Protsyuk “Rose of Ritual Pain”.Methods of analysis, synthesis, description, interpretation, psychoanalytic methodology, postcolonial reading were used to analyze the set goal.Research results. The novel presents a wide range of artistic psychoanalytic tools – unconscious processes of mental development of the hero, traumas and traumatic events in the life of Vasily Stefanyk, a body of mental inspirations, built on numerous fears, neuroses, pain, a number of associations and suggestions, well-associated images and visionary discourses, indepth archetypes. It was found that neurosis is a natural consequence of the intensified struggle of various incarnations of Vasyl Stefanyk, which he tried to reconcile with each other. Significant aspects of the appearance and functioning of the neurotic state of the hero added children’s trauma, fears, complexes, stress, excessive anxiety. Internal tension and early childhood trauma formed deeply associated images of the beast with the bloody paw and the Bullet of Alarm as fundamental neurotic factors. The Oedipus complex and the conflict between the real idea of oneself and one’s ideal self also significantly developed the neurotic way of life of Vasyl Stefanyk. It is established that the image of Vasyl Stefanyk in the novel is marked by dispersive tension, excessive anxiety, which led to the emergence of a depressive, melancholic and partly infantile worldview. It was found that creativity helped the character to alleviate tension, fears, guilt, sins.Conclusions. The image of Vasyl Stefanyk in the novel is marked by neurosis, the key components of which are excessive anxiety, depression, actually neurotic and mental disorders in behavior, fears and addictions, communication problems, the Oedipus complex, multiple personality. Important psychoanalytic codes for the interpretation of the neurotic type of personality are the deep personal associations of the Bullet of Alarm and the beast with the bloody paw, which express the neurotic discourse of the protagonist’s performance.Key words: neurosis, fear, trauma, anxiety, association. Мета статті – на матеріалі художньо-біографічного роману С. The goal of this chapter is to further consider how the theoretical framework presented in the book is applicable to so much of what people do, as well as to so many complex human issues and concerns. In this chapter, a wide net is cast to consider how the theoretical framework is applicable to eating, freedom, attitudes, extreme action, and art. By thinking about these topics in terms of action, readers can see how the book’s theoretical framework provides a common language for thinking systematically about a wide range of complex issues. The chapter shows how the book’s action perspective provides ways of thinking systematically about the complexities of action as people go about their lives in all corners of the world.

Nanoparticles are nanometer sized metallic oxides which possess enhanced properties that are desirable to a wide range of industries. In this study, we investigate structural and surface properties of anatase TiO2 nanoparticles in vacuum and water environments using molecular dynamics simulations. The particle sizes ranged from 2 to 6 nm and simulations were performed at 300 K. Surface energy of the particles in vacuum was seen to be higher than that of the particles in water by about 100% for the smaller particles (i.e. 2 and 3nm) and about 60% for the larger particles (i.e. 4 to 6 nm). Surface energy of the particles in both environments, is seen to increase to a maximum (optimum value) as the particle size increases after which no further significant increase is observed. In vacuum, studies carried out at temperatures ranging from 300–2500 K showed a high dependence of surface energy on temperature. The estimated surface tension of water is seen to agree quite well with that of experiments.

Refractories cover a wide range of products. With the aim to precisely describe the key product properties, end-users and refractory producers have progressively developed a common language: refractory standards. After a brief description of refractory standards history, and a synoptic overview of the present status, future prospects are illustrated by an example. The Belgian Ceramic Research Centre (BCRC) has recently launched a pre-normative research in the field of unshaped refractories. It focuses on robust methods to assess the workability and setting of hydraulically bonded unshaped products. Among the investigated methods, the so-called “exothermic profile” appears to have a high potential to become a standard for refractory producers or end-users.
