Adequate serum vitamin D and iron levels are thought to influence physical training adaptations and mood positively. The primary purpose of this prospective, observational study was to investigate relationships between serum 25-OH vitamin D/25(OH)D and serum ferritin levels with body composition and athlete burnout symptoms. Seventy-three collegiate athletes (female: n = 49; male: n = 24) from indoor (swimming, basketball) and outdoor (soccer, cross-country) sports were tested pre-season and post-season for serum 25(OH)D and serum ferritin (nutrient biomarkers) via venipuncture; body composition (total lean mass, bone mineral density/BMD, and % body fat) via dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans; and athlete burnout symptoms (post-season) via the athlete burnout questionnaire (ABQ). When male and female cohorts were combined, significant correlations (Pearson’s r) were noted between pre-season serum 25(OH)D versus the change (∆: post-season minus pre-season) in both BMD (r = −0.34; p = 0.0003) and % body fat (r = −0.28; p = 0.015). Serum ferritin ∆ was significantly associated with lean mass ∆ (r = −0.34; p = 0.003). For burnout symptoms, serum 25(OH)D ∆ significantly explained 20.6% of the variance for devaluation of the sport in the male cohort only. Across time, serum 25(OH)D levels decreased while serum ferritin levels increased, non-significantly, in both males and females. Relationships between nutrient biomarkers and body composition were opposite of physiological expectations.

Abstract Objectives Background: South Asian Indians (SAI) have a higher prevalence of both chronic diseases and vitamin D deficiency compared to Caucasians. Previous research shows that vitamin D status is a determinant of metabolic health. SAIs have higher total fat, lower lean mass, and higher visceral or truncal fat compared to Caucasians. These factors are all associated with chronic health conditions at a younger age than their Caucasian counterparts. Objective The study aimed to determine the association between body composition parameters and the biomarkers of vitamin D status and whether these relationships differed between Caucasian and SAI cohorts. Methods Healthy SAIs and Caucasian men, who were 22 to 60 years of age, were enrolled. Anthropometric and body composition measurements, serum levels of 25 Hydroxy-vitamin D (25OHD), Parathyroid Hormone, and Vitamin D Binding-Protein were obtained. Independent t-test and Mann-Whitney u test were used to report the differences between groups. Spearman correlation was used to identify the possible association. A P value of less than 0.05 was considered significant. Results 30 SAIs and 30 Caucasians completed the study. Both groups did not significantly differ in their age and BMI. The 25OHD levels were statistically different between Caucasians (31.24 ± 9.14 ng/mL) and SAIs (22.94 ± 7.19 ng/mL), (P < 0.01). The correlation analysis found that among Caucasians, percent of Fat Free Mass (FFM), android fat, gynoid fat, visceral adipose tissue (VAT) correlated negatively with 25OHD levels (P < 0.05). Among SAIs, % of FFM, Fat Mass, Lean mass correlated negatively with 25OHD levels (P < 0.05). Conclusions VAT showed a negative association with vitamin D status in Caucasians only. Abstract Background Whether vitamin D supplementation has any effect on body fat percentage, especially among elite athletes, remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of vitamin D supplementation on serum vitamin D level in elite male collegiate athletes and to analyze its effect on body fat percentage. Methods We enrolled a total of 42 elite male collegiate athletes in this prospective cohort study. In March 2020, body composition monitoring and blood test were performed. All athletes were provided with vitamin D3 supplement tablets of 25 μg/day. The use of the supplement was dependent on athletes’ preference. During the study period, their club activities were stopped for 2 months due to the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak. A second examination, similar to the first one, was performed after approximately 3 months. Supplement usage by each athlete was also confirmed. The participants were divided into a non-supplement group (without supplementation, n = 15) and a supplement group (with supplementation, n = 27). Results Regarding baseline data at initial examination, the non-supplement and supplement groups showed significant differences in the mean body fat percentage (9.0% and 12.1%, respectively; P = 0.03) and serum 25(OH)D level (22.7 and 18.5 ng/mL, respectively, P = 0.02). At the time of the second examination, there were no significant differences in the results of both the groups. In terms of mean change value from the first to the second examination, there were significant differences in body fat percentage (1.9 and 0.2%, respectively, P = 0.02) and serum 25(OH)D level (1.7 and 7.2 ng/mL, respectively, P < 0.001) between the two groups. A significant negative correlation was observed between the change ratio of body fat percentage and change value of serum 25(OH)D level (r =  − 0.37, P = 0.02). Conclusions Vitamin D supplementation of 25 μg/day significantly increased the serum 25(OH)D level in elite male collegiate athletes. Vitamin D supplementation may play a role in maintaining athletes’ body fat percentage under circumstances where sports activity has decreased.

Background: HIV and antiretroviral therapy (ART) alter vitamin D metabolism, and may be associated with bone loss.Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and body composition in postmenopausal South African women living with HIV and on ART.Method: In this 2-year longitudinal study on 120 women conducted in the North West province of South Africa, serum 25(OH)D concentration, bone mineral density (BMD) at three sites, lean mass and percentage of body fat (%BF) were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Multivariable linear mixed models were used to assess the association between serum 25(OH)D and body composition over 2 years. Linear mixed models were also used to determine the longitudinal association between lean mass, %BF and BMD.Results: Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency increased from baseline (10.2% and 19.5%) to 11.5% and 37.5%, respectively, after 2 years. Serum 25(OH)D decreased significantly, however, with a small effect size of 0.39 (P = 0.001), whilst total BMD (effect size 0.03, P = 0.02) and left hip femoral neck (FN) BMD (effect size 0.06, P = 0.0001) had significant small increases, whereas total spine BMD did not change over the 2 years. Serum 25(OH)D had no association with any BMD outcomes. Lean mass had a stronger positive association with total spine and left FN BMD than %BF.Conclusion: Serum 25(OH)D was not associated with any BMD outcomes. Maintenance of lean mass could be important in preventing bone loss in this vulnerable group; however, longer follow-up may be necessary to confirm the association.

Vitamin D is essential for maintaining calcium homeostasis and optimizing bone health. Its inadequacy is related to many factors including dietary intake. The aim of the present study was to evaluate serum 25(OH)D and its relationship with nutrient intakes in postmenopausal Brazilian women with osteoporosis. This cross-sectional study comprised 45 free-living and assisted elderly at São Paulo Hospital. Three-day dietary records were used to assess dietary intakes. Bone mineral density was measured with a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometer (DXA). Blood and urine sample were collected for analysis of biochemical markers of bone and mineral metabolism. Insufficiency of vitamin D was observed in 24.4% of the women and optimal levels (≥ 50 nmol/L) were observed in 75.6%. Parathyroid hormone was above the reference range in 51% of the participants. The mean calcium (724 mg/day) and vitamin D (4.2 μ g/day) intakes were lower than the value proposed by The Food and Nutrition Board and sodium intake was more than two-fold above the recommendation. Higher levels of serum 25(OH)D were inversely associated with sodium intake. Dietary strategies to improve serum vitamin D must focus on increasing vitamin D intake and should take a reduction of sodium intake into consideration.

Background:The onset of the disease in young and middle age is typical for rheumatic diseases (RDS), but most studies on osteoporosis were conducted in patients (pts) older than 50 years, which included postmenopausal women.Objectives:To assess bone mineral density (BMD), fracture frequency and the factors associated with low BMD in premenopausal women with RDs.Methods:160 women (median age, 36 [29; 43] years): 120 pts with RDs (43 rheumatoid arthritis (RA), 53 systemic sclerosis (SSc) and 24 psoriatic arthritis (PsA)) and 40 age-matched healthy controls were enrolled in the study. We performed a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA, Hologic Discovery A, USA) to measure BMD in lumbar spine, femoral neck and total hip. BMD decreasing grade was evaluated by the Z-score <-2SD. All pts were interviewed using a unified questionnaire including assessment of daily dietary calcium intake. Serum vitamin D, C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) measurements were done.Results:25% pts with RDs and only 8% healthy controls have low BMD (p=0.02). RA, SSc and PsA pts had low BMD in 37%, 21% and 13%, respectively, that was more often than in healthy women (p=0.004, p=0.046 and p= 0.081, respectively). 9,3% RA pts and 7,5% SSc pts had low energy fractures. BMD of RDs pts in all areas of measurement demonstrated a direct correlation with height, weight, body mass index, and serum vitamin D concentration and an inverse correlation with the cumulative dose of glucocorticoids. Also, proximal femur BMD inversely correlated with RDs duration. BMD of femoral neck and total hip inversely correlated with C-reactive protein level in SSc pts. In RA women we found a direct correlation between lumbar spine and femur neck BMD and ESR.Conclusion:25% of premenopausal women with RDs had reduced BMD and needed monitoring and osteoporosis prevention, while 9.3% pts with RA and 7.5% women with SSc needed anti-osteoporotic treatment.Disclosure of Interests:None declared
