The effect of the application of chitosan–Aloe vera coatings emulsified with beeswax (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2%) during storage of Mangifera indica L. (cv Anwar Ratol) was investigated. Particle size of emulsions was reduced significantly with an increase in beeswax concentration. Water vapor permeability of the coatings was reduced by 43.7% with an increase in concentration of beeswax to 2%. The coated mangoes (at all concentrations of beeswax) exhibited reduced weight loss, delayed firmness loss, minimized pH change, maintained the total soluble solid contents, and retained free radical scavenging activity and total phenolic contents when stored at 18 °C and 75 ± 5% R.H. The best results were produced with a formulation containing 2.0% beeswax. Antimicrobial properties of chitosan and Aloe vera coatings were also improved with an increase in beeswax concentration and remarkably reduced the disease incidence in mangoes. In conclusion, beeswax-emulsified chitosan–Aloe vera coatings can be effectively used to increase the shelf life and marketable period of mangoes.

Green chilies are highly perishable with limited postharvest life which substantially affects its quality and market potential. The present study was part of an ACIAR-funded project aiming at evaluating the effect low cost Glad wrap film packaging (GWFP) on eight commercial green chili cultivars (Kunri-1, Longi, Talhari, Skyline 1 and 3, Super-hot, Advanta and BSS-410) to help improve shelf life and quality during ambient storage at 18±2 °C. Chilies were weighed and filled in polyvinyl trays and wrapped with Glad wrap film. Chilies kept in Glad wrap film packaging improved marketability index and shelf life for 9 to 15 days compared to open top trays (control) with shelf life of 3 to 6 days depending on cultivar. GWFP storage of chili fruits markedly reduced weight loss, decay, disease incidence, wrinkling. red chili percentage and relative electrolyte leakage as compared with control. It was noted that chilies stored under GWFP displayed significantly higher firmness, soluble solid contents, acidity, ascorbic acid with maintained radical scavenging activity. In addition, total phenolic contents, enzymatic essays i.e. superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO) catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities were significantly higher in GWFP kept chilies. Conclusively, the low cost Glad wrap film packaging can be employed as promising technique to reduce postharvest losses, extend shelf life and maintain postharvest quality of chilies leading to more profit for the growers and linked stakeholders.

This study was undertaken to determine the antioxidant and antimicrobial effect of essential oil and extracts of Echinophora sibthorpiana Guss. (fam. Apiaceae) collected in Macedonia. The chemical composition of E. sibthorpiana essential oil was characterized by the presence of methyl eugenol (60.40%), p-cymene (11.18%) and ?-phellandrene (10.23%). The free radical scavenging activity of extracts and essential oil was evaluated by DPPH and ABTS assays. The aqueous extract of aerial parts exhibited the strongest scavenging activity (IC50=1.67 mg/ml); results of the ABTS test showed that the most effective was the ethanol extract of aerial parts (1.11 mg vit. C/g). The essential oil showed stronger antioxidant activity compared to hydroxyanisole, ascorbic acid and quercetin that were used in the DPPH and ABTS tests, respectively. The total phenolic and flavonoid concentrations in the extracts ranged between 38.65-60.72 mg GA/g, and 3.15-19.00 mg Qu/g, respectively. The antimicrobial properties of the extracts and essential oil were investigated using a micro-well dilution technique against human pathogenic strains. The results were comparable with the effects of the positive controls, streptomycin and fluconazole. These findings indicate that E. sibthorpiana extracts and oil can be used in preventive treatments and as an alternative for synthetic preservatives.

Ethnobotanic surveys have revealed the use of Mangifera indica L. (Anacardiaceae) bark for the treatment of infectious diarrhea. The essential oil of M. indica bark is described for the first time for its chemical composition, radical scavenging activity (DPPH method) and antimicrobial properties. The total phenols content of its water and ethanol bark extracts as well as their radical scavenging and antimicrobial properties were also evaluated. Four commercial plant extracts were also studied for a comparison purpose. The antimicrobial activities were measured for all samples against three Gram (-): Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis, Shigella and two Gram (+): Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus bacteria. The M. indica bark essential oil was characterized by the association of two major sesquiterpenes: ( E)-β-caryophyllene (60.3%) and α-humulene (36.7%). It presented the lowest ratio of concentration to inhibition zone diameter on all the strains. The aqueous and ethanol extracts of M. indica bark were characterized by high contents of total phenols compounds and high radical scavenging activity compared to the essential oil. Finally, the interesting combination of the antibacterial and antiradical activities of the aqueous M. indica bark extract justifies the traditional use of this plant part in decoction form for the treatment of diarrheal infections.

The chemical composition, as well as the total phenolic content (TPC) and the potential antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, of three Kainari-herbal tea samples from different areas of Lesvos Island (Greece) was evaluated. The rich aroma of the mixtures was studied through GC-MS, as well as through Headspace Solid-Phase Microextraction (HS-SPME)/GC-MS analyses. Cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, pepper, and ginger were identified as main ingredients, while, throughout the chemical analysis of the volatiles of one selected sample, several secondary metabolites have been isolated and identified on the basis of GC-MS as well as spectral evidence as eugenol, cinnamic aldehyde and myristicin, cinnamyl alcohol, alpha-terpinyl acetate, and β-caryophyllene. Furthermore, two food dyes, azorubine and amaranth, were also isolated and identified from the infusions. The total phenolic content was estimated and the free radical scavenging activity was determined by DPPH and ABTS assays and the antimicrobial activity of the extracts was tested showing a very interesting profile against all the assayed microorganisms. Due to its very pleasant aroma and taste properties as well as to its bioactivities, Kainari-herbal tea could be further proposed as functional beverage.

Abstract The methanolic extract of ten Zingiberaceae taxa were evaluated for their phytochemical constituents, total phenolic and flavonoid contents along with in-vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Among the extracts, Kaempferia parviflora and Zingiber montanum were the most potent reducing agents, while Zingiber officinale exhibited strong free radical-scavenging activity. The high phenolic content observed in Z. montanum, Z. officinale and Curcuma longa may be attributed to the strong antioxidant activity. Furthermore, the extracts of C. longa, K. parviflora and Z. montanum effectively inhibite the growth of test pathogenic microbes. This study suggest that the ginger species are promising source of natural of antioxidant with strong antimicrobial properties.

In the study, the bioactive, physicochemical and antimicrobial properties of koruk juice and dried koruk pomace were investigated. The total phenolic contents of koruk juice and pomace were determined as 1119.670 and 1182.170 mg GAE/L, respectively. Higher DPPH radical scavenging activity found in koruk pomace, which was consistent with total phenolic contents. Organic acid, total sugar and ascorbic acid contents of koruk juice (3.44%, 4.737 g/L and 2.559 mg/100 mL) were higher than koruk pomace (0.19%, 0.866 g/L and 0.242 mg/100 mL). The counts of Total Psychrophilic Aerobic Bacteria and mold-yeast in pomace were determined as 0.694 and 1.016 log CFU/g, respectively, while no growth was observed in koruk juice. Koruk juice and pomace indicated antimicrobial effect on all test microorganisms in the range of 31.3-500.0 µg/mL (Minimum Inhibition Concentration). The most sensitive bacteria to koruk juice were Bacillus cereus, while Pediococcus acidilactici was the most sensitive one to koruk pomace. Koruk juice also showed bactericidal effect on all test cultures at concentration ranging between 250.0 and 500.0 µg/mL (Minimum Bactericidal Concentration), koruk pomace was not showed bactericidal effect on Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella Typhimurium, E. coli and B. cereus. This study demonstrated that the koruk products could be used in food applications as natural antioxidant and antimicrobial substance.

This study was carried out to evaluate the antioxidant properties of Greek endemic Cistus creticus L. (rock rose) bee pollen and define its phenolic compounds. In the framework of our scientific studies on Greek bee keeping products, we report herein our research on three Greek bee pollen samples from Cistus. Their pollinic spectra were obtained by Louveaux's quantitative microscopical analysis and it showed that one of them had Cistus sp. (Cistaceae) as abundant pollen (together with low percentage of Brassica sp. (Cruciferae). Throughout the chemical analysis of the extracts, several secondary metabolites of flavonoid structure have been identified as major components. Specifically, quercetin-7-rhamnoside (1), quercetin-3-neohesperidoside (2), kaempferol-3-neohesperidoside (3), myricetin-3-neohesperidoside (4), kaempferol-3-glucoside (5) and quercetin-3-glucoside (6) have been isolated and their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectral evidence. Moreover, the total phenolic and flavonoid content was estimated and the free radical scavenging activity was determined by DPPH and ABTS assays. The antimicrobial activity of the extracts was tested against six Gram-positive and -negative bacteria and three pathogenic fungi, and the butanol extract showed a very interesting broad antimicrobial profile (MIC 1.98•10−3 - 2.98•10−3 mg/ml) against all the assayed microorganisms.

Nyctanthes arbour-tristis is a shrub belongs to the family Oleaceae. The flowers of this plant are fragrant since the presence of flavonol glycosides. It has also been reported for the presence of β-sitosterol, iridoid glycosides, tannins etc., and known to have immunostimulant, hepatoprotective, antiviral and antifungal activities. In the present study an attempt is made to identify antioxidant capacity and anthelminthic potential of methanolic flower extract of Nyctanthes arbour-tristis. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by total phenolic content assay, total flavonoids content assay, free radical scavenging activity and reducing ability methods. Anthelmintic activity was evaluated on Perithima posthuma using Piperazine citrate as standard drug. The results obtained for the above activities reveals that Nyctanthes arbour-tristis shows considerable antioxidant activity for all the methods and anthelminthic potential at 300 mg/ml. The current investigation is intended to evaluate the content of phytochemical constituents and antioxidant potential of hydroalcoholic extracts of stem and root of Grewia serrulata DC (HAESGS & HAERGS) and leaf and bark of Grewia Nervosa (Lour.) panigrahi (HAELGN & HAEBGN). Initially, all the extracts at different concentrations were estimated for their total phenolic content and total flavonoid content. The study was further extended for their antioxidant potential evaluation using various in vitro methods such as 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical scavenging assays. The total phenolic content (mg gallic acid equivalent per gram of extract) was high in HAELGN (170.82±0.19) and HAERGS (123.00±0.48) than HAESGS (111.2±0.26) and HAEBGN (119.60±0.23). The total flavonoid content (mg quercetin equivalent per gram) is greater in HAERGS (71.24±0.50) and HAESGS (65.68±0.27) than HAELGN (55.82±0.35) and HAEBGN (62.38±0.45). The IC50 values (µg/ml) of different plant extracts inferred that DPPH radical scavenging activity is greater in HAELGN (42.91±0.88) and HAEBGN (53.87±0.35) than HAESGS (126.73±1.20) and HAERGS (88.87±1.25). However, hydroxyl and superoxide radical scavenging activity is more in HAERGS (135.41±1.19 & 88.00±1.42) and HAELGN (172.28±1.91 & 108.163±1.09) than HAESGS (237.3±1.65 & 110.074±0.87) and HAEBGN (204.7±1.04 & 125.54±1.07). The results of present comprehensive analysis demonstrated that both the plants Grewia serrulata DC and Grewia Nervosa (Lour.) panigrahi possess high phenolic, flavonoid contents and potential antioxidant activity, and could be used as a valid source of natural antioxidants and might be utilized for pharmacological screening of various therapeutic activities. Abstract Baicalin, an active flavonoid ingredient of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, was extracted by heat reflux extraction and showed the same significance UV absorption property with standard baicalin. Active films were prepared from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) containing baicalin extract by casting method. The effect of baicalin extracts on the UV-blocking, optical, antioxidant property, water vapor permeability, swelling and mechanical properties of the films were studied. UV–vis transmittance spectra showed that PVA films incorporated with baicalin extract blocked ultraviolet light range from 280–400 nm even with low concentration of baicalin (0.5 wt%) and maintain the high transparency in visible spectrum. The outstanding UV-blocking properties of PVA films incorporated with baicalin extract were also confirmed by Rhodamine B degradation. Baicalin conferred antioxidant properties to PVA films as determined by DPPH radical scavenging activity. Due to the interaction between hydroxy groups of baicalin and PVA molecule, water vapor permeability, swelling and elongation at break of the films were decreased accompanied with the increasing in tensile strength and Young’s modulus. FTIR reveal that the interaction between PVA molecules was significant changed by the introduction of baicalin. These results suggest that PVA film incorporated with baicalin extract can be used for the development of functional protective film.
