Applications of nanotechnologies in different sectors and everyday items are very promising and their popularity continues to grow. The number of products containing nanoparticles makes environmental exposure to nanoparticles inevitable. The current understanding of the relationships between nanoparticles and the environment is inadequate despite the fast growth of nanotechnologies. The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of copper and gold nanoparticles on Daphnia pulex survival. Our study included 48-hour acute toxicity tests and determination of median lethal concentration values (LC50s) for Cu-NPs and Au-NPs. For nano-copper, 24 h LC50 was assumed > 1 mg/L, and 48 h LC50 = 0.5117 mg/L. For nano-gold the LC50 value after 24 h was 0.4027 mg/L, and after 48 h 0.1007 mg/L. The toxicity of nano -gold solutions was thus found to be higher than that of nano-copper. The addition of Cu-NPs at 0.0625 mg/L and 0.125 mg/L caused an increased multiplication of daphnia, while Au-NPs at 1 mg/L was an inhibitor of reproduction.

With the increasing focus on environmental issues, the objective of this study is to evaluate the potential impact of contaminated sediments of the Blesbok Spruit near Witbank - which receives acid mine drainage (AMD) inter alia - on biota. Direct transfer of chemicals from sediments to organisms is considered to be a major route of exposure for many species, and therefore focusing attention on sediment contamination and highlighting the fact that sediments are an important resource. Acute toxicity tests were performed on Daphnia pulex using both extracted sediment interstitial water and surface water. Chemical analyses were also performed on the sediment, interstitial water and surface water samples. The toxicity results suggest that metal toxicity adds significantly to the toxicity of the stream water which is enhanced by the effect of pH. The pH of the stream and interstitial water was consistently below 4.5.

In this study, we report a straightforward strategy for Hg2+ ion detection. Fluorescent Au nanoparticles (NPs) were one-pot synthesized using a polymer (polyvinyl pyrrolidone [PVP]) as both capping and fluorescence agent. The as-synthesized PVP-Au NPs showed a remarkably rapid response selectively for Hg2+ ions compared to 14 other metal ions. The detection limit of Hg2+ was estimated at 100 nM. We discuss the emission and quenching mechanism of the PVP-Au NPs, the former being attributed to metal enhanced fluorescence and the latter being related to static quenching by Hg2+. The fluorescence of PVP-Au NPs offers an efficient and reliable strategy for Hg2+ ions detection. They therefore have a great potential for applications in health and environmental monitoring.

Impregnation and deposition-precipitation (DP) methods were employed for the preparation of Au nanoparticles supported on SBA-15, and the influences of various reductants were systematically surveyed. The dispersion and particle size of gold loaded on SBA-15 were determined by XRD, SEM and TEM. It has been found that reductants have effect on the size and dispersion of Au NPs, resulting in different catalytic properties for aerobic oxidation of glucose. The Au NPs on SBA-15 using KBH4as reductant was approximately 5-6 nm, which exhibited excellent catalytic activity.

The median lethal concentration (LC50) of aqueous ammonia at reduced dissolved oxygen (D.O.) concentrations was tested in acute toxicity tests with rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) fingerlings. Fifteen 96-h flow-through tests were conducted over the D.O. range 2.6–8.6 mg/L, the former concentration being the lowest at which control fish survived. There was a positive linear correlation between LC50 (milligrams per litre un-ionized ammonia) and D.O. over the entire D.O. range tested; ammonia toxicity increased as D.O. decreased. Ammonia LC50 values were also computed for 12, 24, 48, and 72 h; the correlation with D.O. was greater the shorter the time period.Key words: ammonia toxicity, dissolved oxygen, rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri

This works strong the embossing as regards riches (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) regarding attenuate TiO2 films. Au (Au-TiO2) patterned flabby film TiO2. The morphology, cleanly structure, issue administration then optical homes concerning the films hold been studied. Gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) are synthesized along the useful resource on lowering hydrated gold steel ions of touch together along aqueous sow dermis extract. The alternate among the elevation or assignment about Au NPs elevated the reply above the ethanol gas sensors. The organized Au-TiO2 was once tested, of assessment together with allusion TiO2 membranes, such then ethanol sensors at 250-350 ° C at a fuel attention of 50-1000 ppm. In addition, the SERS deep concerning the excised Au/ TiO2 emaciated movie is about iii cases that above the deposited Au/ TiO2 gaunt film. The results proven in imitation of so much aggregation Au-coated TiO2 at 6 s spray epoch gave the beneficial file on 514 at 350 ° C deed useless heat since 1000 ppm fuel concentration.
