The History of Education Quarterly has done it again. Despite many scholars' previous attempts to summarize the state of the art in historical studies of literacy, this special issue will now be the best, up-to-date place for a novice to start. It should be required reading for everyone interested in this subfield. The editors have enlisted an impressive roster of prominent scholars in the field, and these authors have provided us with an excellent array of synthetic reviews, methodological and theoretical discussions, and exemplary research papers.

Quantitative analysis of the brain tumors provides valuable information for understanding the tumor characteristics and treatment planning better. The accurate segmentation of lesions requires more than one image modalities with varying contrasts. As a result, manual segmentation, which is arguably the most accurate segmentation method, would be impractical for more extensive studies. Deep learning has recently emerged as a solution for quantitative analysis due to its record-shattering performance. However, medical image analysis has its unique challenges. This paper presents a review of state-of-the-art deep learning methods for brain tumor segmentation, clearly highlighting their building blocks and various strategies. We end with a critical discussion of open challenges in medical image analysis.

The development of medicines designed for children can be challenging since this distinct patient population requires specific needs. A formulation designed for paediatric patients must consider the following aspects: patient population variability; dose flexibility; route of administration; patient compliance; drug and excipient tolerability. The purpose of this Special Issue entitled “Paediatric Formulation: Design and Development” is to provide an update on both state-of-the-art methodology and operational challenges in the design and development of paediatric formulations. It aims at re-evaluating what is needed for more progress in the design and development of age-appropriate treatments for paediatric diseases, focusing on: formulation development; drug delivery design; efficacy, safety, and tolerability of drugs and excipients. This editorial, briefly, summarizes the objects of nine original research and review papers published in this Special Issue.

AbstractThere were 79 articles published in the Journal of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (JCMR) in 2019, including 65 original research papers, 2 reviews, 8 technical notes, 1 Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonacne (SCMR) guideline, and 3 corrections. The volume was down slightly from 2018 (n = 89) with a corresponding 5.5% increase in manuscript submissions from 345 to 366. This led to a slight decrease in the acceptance rate from 25 to 22%. The quality of the submissions continues to be high. The 2019 JCMR Impact Factor (which is published in June 2020) increased from 5.07 to 5.36. The 2020 impact factor means that on average, each JCMR published in 2017 and 2018 was cited 5.36 times in 2019. Our 5 year impact factor was 5.2. We are now finishing the 13th year of JCMR as an open-access publication with BMC. As outlined in this report, the Open-Access system has dramatically increased the reading and citation of JCMR publications. I hope that our authors will continue to send their very best, high quality manuscripts for JCMR consideration and that our readers will continue to look to JCMR for the very best/state-of-the-art publications in our field. It takes a village to run a journal. JCMR is blessed to have very dedicated Associate Editors, Guest Editors, and Reviewers. I thank each of them for their efforts to ensure that the review process occurs in a timely and responsible manner. These efforts have allowed the JCMR to continue as the premier journal of our field. My role, and the entire process would not be possible without the dedication and efforts of our managing editor, Diana Gethers (who will leaving the journal in the coming months) and our assistant managing editor, Jennifer Rodriguez, who has agreed to increase her reponsibilities. Finally, I thank you for entrusting me with the editorship of the JCMR. As I begin my 5th year as your editor-in-chief, please know that I fully recognize we are not perfect in our review process. We try our best to objectively assess every submission in a timely manner, but sometimes don't get it “right.” The editorial process is a tremendously fulfilling experience for me. The opportunity to review manuscripts that reflect the best in our field remains a great joy and a highlight of my week!

The assessments on human perception of urban spaces are essential for the management and upkeep of surroundings. A large part of the previous studies is dedicated towards the visual appreciation and judgement of various physical features present in the surroundings. Visual qualities of the environment stimulate feelings of safety, pleasure, and belongingness. Scaling such assessments to cover city boundaries necessitates the assistance of state-of-the-art computer vision techniques. We developed a mobile-based application to collect visual datasets in the form of street-level imagery with the help of volunteers. We further utilised the potential of deep learning-based image analysis techniques in gaining insights into such datasets. In addition, we explained our findings with the help of environment variables which are related to individual satisfaction and wellbeing.

Abstract In situ and operando spectroscopic methods play a fundamental role in a variety of different fields of modern science. In particular, as energy and environmental science have become increasingly important recently, the need of in situ and operando spectroscopic methods has also increased significantly. Therefore, we felt it was time to have a special issue focused on such techniques and for which the aim is ‘to merge the research communities investigating catalytic and (photo)electrochemical interfaces with different in situ/operando spectroscopic techniques, to share recent results, experimental methods, and future perspectives’, as we reported in the scope of this special issue. With its 23 original research papers and 2 topical reviews, spanning from heterogeneous catalysis to photoelectrochemistry, we believe that the outcome of this special issue fulfills the aforementioned aim.
