In this study, the generalized softened variable angle truss-model (GSVATM) is used to predict the response of reinforced concrete (RC) beams under torsion at the early loading stages, namely the transition from the uncracked to the cracked stage. Being a 3-dimensional smeared truss model, the GSVATM must incorporate smeared constitutive laws for the materials, namely for the tensile concrete. Different smeared constitutive laws for tensile concrete can be found in the literature, which could lead to different predictions for the torsional response of RC beams at the earlier stages. Hence, the GSVATM is used to check several smeared constitutive laws for tensile concrete proposed in previous studies. The studied parameters are the cracking torque and the corresponding twist. The predictions of these parameters from the GSVATM are compared with the experimental results from several reported tests on RC beams under torsion. From the obtained results and the performed comparative analyses, one of the checked smeared constitutive laws for tensile concrete was found to lead to good predictions for the cracking torque of the RC beams regardless of the cross-section type (plain or hollow). Such a result could be useful to help with choosing the best constitutive laws to be incorporated into the smeared truss models to predict the response of RC beams under torsion.

When the various reinforced concrete structures are designed according to EC2 and STR, the difference of calculation results, is quite significant. In this article the calculations of shear strength of bending reinforced concrete elements are investigated according to these standards. The comparison of such calculations is also significant in the sense that the shear strength calculations are carried out according to different principles. The STR regulations are based on work of the shear reinforcement crossing the oblique section and the compressed concrete at the end of the section. In this case, at the supporting zone, the external bending moment and shear force should be in equilibrium with the internal forces in reinforcement and compressed concrete, i.e., the cross section must be checked not only from the external shear force, but also from bending moment. In EC2 standard, the shear strengths are calculated according to simplified truss model, which consists of the tension shear reinforcement bars and compressed concrete struts. The bending moment is not estimated. After calculation analysis of these two methods the relationships between shear strength and various element parameters are presented. The elements reinforced with stirrups and bends are investigated additionally because in EC2 this case is not presented. According to EC2 the simplified truss model solution depends on the compression strut angle value θ, which is limited in certain interval. Since the component of tension reinforcement bar directly depends on the angle θ and the component of compression strut depends on it conversely, then exists some value θ when the both components are equal. So the angle θ can be found when such two components will be equated. However, such calculation of angle θ became complicated if the load is uniform, because then the components of tension bar are estimated not in support cross section but in cross section that are displaced by distance d. So, the cube equation should be solved. For simplification of such solution the graphical method to find out the angle θ and the shear strength are presented. In these graphics the intersection point of two components (shear reinforcement and concrete) curves describes the shear strength of element. Straipsnyje pateikiamos kampo θ apskaičiavimo lygtys, atsižvelgiant į apkrovimo pobūdį. Norint supaprastinti pateiktų lygčių sprendimą siūlomas grafoanalitinis sprendimo būdas, pritaikant papildomus koeficientus. EC2 neapibrėžia skaičiavimo išraiškų, kai skersinis armavimas yra apkabos ir atlankos. Minėtos išraiškos suformuluotos ir pateiktos straipsnyje. Nustačius EC2 metodikos dėsningumus siūlomas alternatyvus apytikslis skaičiavimo būdas atlankomis ir apkabomis armuotiems elementams. Straipsnyje apžvelgtos abi – STR ir EC2 – metodikos, išskiriant pagrindinius skirtumus ir dėsningumus.

Concrete cracking causes a gradual change in strain distributions along the cross section height of reinforced concrete beams, which will finally affect their instantaneous stiffness. A method for assessing the stiffness is proposed based on the gradual change, which is considered through modeling different strain distributions for key sections in cracked regions. Internal force equilibria are adopted to find a solution to top strains and neutral axes in the models, and then the inertias of the key sections are calculated to assess the beam stiffness. The proposed method has been validated using experimental results obtained from tests on five reinforced concrete beams. The predicted stiffness and displacements are shown to provide a good agreement with experimental data. The instantaneous stiffness is proven to greatly depend on the crack number and depth. This dependence can be exactly reflected by the proposed method through simulating the gradual change in concrete strain distributions.

The following article presents results of investigating the damage detection in reinforced concrete beams with artificially introduced debonding between the rod and cover, using a non-destructive method based on elastic waves propagation. The primary aim of the research was to analyze the possible use of guided waves in partial circumferential debonding detection. Guided waves were excited and registered in reinforced concrete specimens with varying extents of debonding damage by piezoelectric sensors attached at both ends of the beams. Experimental results in the form of time–domain signals registered for variable extent of debonding were compared, and the relationships relating to the damage size and time of flight and average wave velocity were proposed. The experimental results were compared with theoretical predictions based on dispersion curves traced for the free rod of circular cross-section and rectangular reinforced concrete cross-section. The high agreement of theoretical and experimental data proved that the proposed method, taking advantage of average wave velocity, can be efficiently used for assessing debonding size in reinforced concrete structures. It was shown that the development of damage size in circumferential direction has a completely different impact on wave velocity than development of debonding length. The article contains a continuation of work previously conducted on the detection of delamination in concrete structures. The proposed relationship is the next essential step for developing a diagnostics method for detecting debondings of any size and orientation.

A novel retrofitting method using extremely prestressed carbon fiber sheets, MLML (Multi-Layer Multi-Tensioning) method, was proposed for improving the flexural strength of reinforced concrete structures. The experimental results suggested that the crack initiation strength and the energy absorbing capacity of RC beams could be largely improved by the MLMT method. However, the advantage of the MLMT method was not so clear on the rebars yielding strength and the ultimate flexural strength of RC beams, compared with the conventional methods.

Through repair and reinforcement of breaking reinforced concrete beams by epoxy resin and carbon cloth, and its experiment, the crack and deformation and bearing capacity as well as ductility of such beams are obtained. Experimental results show that the ultimate bearing capacity of beams after reinforcement increased by 210%, the structure ductility fell by 170%, structural failure form is similar to failure in normal cross section.

In this paper, behaviour of nine (09) RC beams (including two control beams) after unbonding and exposing flexural reinforcement has been studied which were intentionally designed and detailed to observe flexural and shear failure. Beams have been divided into three groups based on failure mode and unbounded and exposed reinforcement. Beams have been tested under two-point loading up to failure. Experimental results are compared in terms of beam behaviour with respect to flexural capacity and failure mode which revealed that the exposed reinforcement does not altered flexural capacity significantly and unbondedness positively influences shear strength; however, serviceability performance of beams with unbonded and exposed reinforcement is less.

Purpose This study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the influence of the position of openings around L cross-section columns in reinforced concrete flat slabs through a nonlinear computational analysis compared to experimental results. Design/methodology/approach Tests on four reinforced concrete flat slabs of 1800 x 1800 x 120 mm3 were carried out under symmetrical punching; one slab was referenced (without hole) and three had square holes of 100 x 100 mm2 close to columns and with centroid on the critical perimeter at 0.5 d and 2.0 d of the loaded area. A nonlinear analysis of the slabs was performed to aid the interpretation and preview of the experimental results, and to estimate the ultimate loads and failure modes. These estimates followed recommendations of ACI 318, Eurocode 2, NBR 6118, MC 2010 and critical shear crack theory. Findings The results showed that the presence of holes in the analyzed regions does not influence significantly the behavior of the slabs, leading to conservative structural design once the ultimate load estimates are low, while the computational results adequately estimated the slabs’ behavior. Research limitations/implications A few limitations were observed on how to implement the correct modeling system for computational nonlinear simulation. Practical implications All design codes underestimated failure loads and the theoretical method was not much better. The nonlinear computational simulations were satisfactory, presenting results close to experimental ones (97 per cent accuracy). Computational simulation also showed that the presence of holes does not significantly influence the load-vertical displacement behavior or failure loads. Social implications Structural and civil engineers and designers can observe with better details the punching phenomenon and make take secure decisions to building projects. They can preview accurate cases that are not cited in design codes and literature. Originality/value This is a very rare subject in literature that interests the entire scientific community and especially reinforced concrete designers. Presenting a new methodology to nonlinear flat slab with openings modeling to punching shear provoked by L cross section columns, case that is not cited in literature and design codes.

The shear failure of reinforced concrete beams is one of the fundamental problems in civil engineering; however, the diagonal tension strength of reinforced concrete (RC) beams without stirrups is still in question. This paper focuses on the prediction of diagonal cracking strength of RC slender beams without stirrups. In slender beams, flexural cracks develop in the tension zone prior to a diagonal cracking. Using the basic principles of mechanics, but cracking included, and theory of elasticity, a diagonal cracking strength equation is proposed for both normal and high strength concrete beams. The proposed equation, the requirements of six codes of practice and seven equations proposed by different researchers are compared to the experimental results of 282 beams available in the literature. It is found that the predictions from the proposed equation are in good agreement with the experimental results. Santrauka Gelžbetoninių sijų suirimas įstrižajame pjūvyje – viena pagrindinių problemų statybos inžinerijoje. Tačiau skersine armatūra nearmuotų gelžbetoninių sijų įstrižasis tempiamasis stipris nėra visiškai ištirtas. Šiame straipsnyje nagrinėjamas siaurų, be skersinės armatūros gelžbetoninių sijų įstrižojo pjūvio pleišėjimas. Siaurose sijose plyšiai tempiamojoje zonoje atsiranda anksčiau negu įstrižajame pjūvyje. Taikant klasikinius mechanikos principus ir tamprumo teoriją, pasiūlyta normalaus stiprio arba stipriojo betono sijų istrižojo pjūvio atsparumo pleišėjimui apskaičiavimo lygtis. Siūloma lygtis, pagrįsta šešių projektavimo normų reikalavimais ir septyniomis kitų autorių lygtimis bei palyginta su literatūroje pateiktais 282 sijų eksperimentinių tyrimų rezultatais. Nustatyta, kad pagal siūlomą lygtį atlikti skaičiavimai gerai sutampa su eksperimentiniais rezultatais.

The experimental results of crack torque and ultimate torque of six reinforced concrete special-shaped columns under the combined actions of pressure and torque were presented firstly. Then, the calculation formula suggested by the Chinese Code for Design of Concrete Structures for the crack torque and ultimate torque of rectangular columns under the actions of pressure and torque were used for reference to determine the expression forms of crack torque and ultimate torque of special-shaped columns. Moreover, the special-shaped cross section was dealt as a combination of two rectangle cross section. A practical calculation method for crack torque and ultimate torque was proposed by data regression of experimental results.

The performance of the interface between fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites and concrete is one of the key factors affecting the behavior of strengthened reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Existing laboratory research has shown that RC beams strengthened with FRP sheets usually fail because of either debonding of the impregnated fabric from the concrete substrate or fracture of the FRP. This work presents an experimental and analytical investigation of the effectiveness of FRP strengthening sheets on RC beams aiming at increasing their flexural strength and stiffness. Experimental results obtained from beam specimens tested under four-point bending are examined with main parameters being the resin type and the anchoring system. In addition, the procedure suggested by the EC8 - Greek Assessment & Retrofitting Code (EC8-GARC) provisions is applied and compared with the experimental results.
