The powders of boron carbide are usually synthesized by the carbothermal reduction of boron oxide. As an alternative to high-temperature reactions, the development of the carbothermal reduction of organic precursors to produce B4C is receiving considerable interest. The aim of this work was to compare two methods of preparing different saccharide precursors mixed with boric acid with a molar ratio of boron to carbon of 1:9 for the synthesis of B4C. In the first method, aqueous solutions of saccharides and boric acid were dried overnight at 90 °C and pyrolyzed at 850 °C for 1 h under argon flow. In the second method, aqueous solutions of different saccharides and boric acid were freeze-dried and prepared in the same way as in the first method. Precursors from both methods were heat-treated at temperatures of 1300 to 1700 °C. The amount of boron carbide in the powders depends on the saccharides, the temperature of synthesis, and the method of precursor preparation.

Abstract The feasibility of industrial waste fly ash as an alternative fluxing agent for silica in carbothermal reduction of medium-low-grade phosphate ore was studied in this paper. With a series of single-factor experiments, the reduction rate of phosphate rock under different reaction temperature, reaction time, particle size, carbon excess coefficient, and silicon–calcium molar ratio was investigated with silica and fly ash as fluxing agents. Higher reduction rates were obtained with fly ash fluxing instead of silica. The optimal conditions were derived as: reaction temperature 1,300°C, reaction time 75 min, particle size 48–75 µm, carbon excess coefficient 1.2, and silicon–calcium molar ratio 1.2. The optimized process condition was verified with other two different phosphate rocks and it was proved universally. The apparent kinetics analyses demonstrated that the activation energy of fly ash fluxing is reduced by 31.57 kJ/mol as compared with that of silica. The mechanism of better fluxing effect by fly ash may be ascribed to the fact that the products formed within fly ash increase the amount of liquid phase in the reaction system and promote reduction reaction. Preliminary feasibility about the recycling of industrial waste fly ash in thermal phosphoric acid industry was elucidated in the paper.

Abstract Objectives This project aimed at the formulation of dual drug entrapped liposomes held as freeze-dried intravaginal rod insert (IVR), to be administered by vaginal route for uterine targeting. Methods Liposomes were formulated by dehydration–rehydration method using 3 : 1 molar ratio of1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine : Cholesterol. Characterization was done for vesicle size, zeta potential, entrapment efficiency, surface morphology and % loading. Key findings Spherical and discrete vesicles of size 354 nm were observed in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image. The entrapment efficiency of 90.91% and 74.3% w/w was obtained for Raloxifene Hydrochloride (RLX) and Leuprolide acetate (LA) respectively. Drug release was sustained for 6 days. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay results showed that dual drug entrapped liposomal formulation show significant cytotoxicity, as also confirmed by higher apoptosis in cell cycle analysis and apoptosis studies (FACS) analysis. Pharmacodynamic studies in New Zealand white female rabbits revealed that intravaginal administration of RLX-LA entrapped liposomal formulation shows considerable fibroid regression. Conclusions Uterine targeting of liposomal RLX-LA suggests its potential to solve the limitations of the presently available therapeutic options.

Boron Carbide is a ceramic material of technological application due to its extreme hardness and high chemical and thermal stability. The effect of synthesized boron carbide addition on pressureless sintering and hot-pressing of a commercial B4C was investigated. B4C synthesized by carbothermal reduction using carbon black as carbon source was mixtured in 10, 30 and 50 wt% to a commercial B4C. Powder mixtures were compacted into pellets and sintered by pressureless sintering at 2050 °C/30min Samples were compared to a pure commercial B4C and characterization results have not showed great differences. Relative densities of as-sintered materials exceed 93% of theoretical for all compositions and microhardness Hv of ∼ 32 GPa was obtained.
