Metamaterials designate structures with properties exceeding bulk materials. Since the end of the 1990s, they have attracted ever-growing attention in many research fields such as electromagnetics, acoustics, and elastodynamics. This paper presents a numerical and experimental study on a locally resonant auxetic metamaterial for vibration isolation. The designed materials combine different mechanisms—such as buckling, local resonances, and auxetism—to generate enhanced isolation properties. This type of structure could help to improve the isolation for machines, transportation, and buildings. First, the static properties of the reference and resonant structures are compared. Dispersion curves are then analysed to describe their periodic dynamic behaviour. An experimental validation carried out on a specially designed test bench is then presented and compared to corresponding finite structure simulation. As a result, huge bandgaps are found for the resonant case and strong isolation properties are also confirmed by the experimental data.

This paper presents an analytical and experimental analysis of the characteristics of a squeeze-type magnetorheological (MR) mount which can be used for various vibration isolation areas. The concept of the squeeze-type mount and details of the design of a squeeze-type MR mount are discussed. These are followed by a detailed description of the test set-up for evaluating the dynamic behaviour of the mount. A series of tests was conducted on the prototype mount built for this study, in order to characterize the changes occurring as a result of changing electrical current to the mount. The results of this study show that increasing electrical current to the mount, which increases the yield stress of the MR fluid, will result in an increase in both stiffness and damping of the mount. The results also show that the mount hysteresis increases with increase in current to the MR fluid, causing changes in stiffness and damping at different input frequencies.

For the purpose of preventing vibration-sensitive optical switches from malfunction caused by broadband vertical vibration, a novel two-stage vibration isolation platform is proposed. The primary stage is a bellows-type isolator of large stroke and low isolation frequency, and the secondary stage is a small-stroke hybrid isolator composed of bellows and voice-coil actuators. In the primary stage, two pre-compressed horizontal bellows and one vertical bellows are used to counter the weight of the switch and to reduce the total height of the isolator. The static properties of the primary stage are analyzed, and the vibration isolation of the platform is investigated. Numerical results indicate that the two-stage platform is effective in isolating vertical vibration. Experiments are also conducted to verify the performance of the platform. It is exhibited that the transmissibility is less than 0 dB over 2 Hz, and the attenuation rate reaches −35 dB/dec at high frequencies. The frequency range of test is 2–200 Hz, and the maximum displacement is 10 mm at 2 Hz. In the secondary stage, the actuators can substantially suppress the resonance peak, and promote isolation performance at low frequencies.

Tramcar vehicles significantly differ from traditional railway vehicles both for the adopted structural configuration and design solutions and for the operating conditions. For this reason, a new numerical model specific for the analysis of tramcar dynamics has been developed by Politecnico di Milano. Before the numerical model can be adopted as a useful mean to analyse tramcar operational problems, the capability of the model to reproduce the actual tramcar dynamic behaviour has to be verified. The paper deals with the validation of the developed numerical model by means of comparison with experimental data.

This paper presents a virtual model of a scroll compressor developed on the one-dimensional analysis software Simcenter Amesim®. The model is semi-empirical: it needs some physical details of the modelled machine (e.g., the cubic capacity), but, on the other hand, it does not require the geometrical features of the spirals, so it needs experimental data to calibrate it. The model also requires rotational speed and the outlet temperature as boundary conditions. The model predicts the power consumption and the mass flow rate and considers leakages and mechanical losses. After the model presentation, this paper describes the test bench and the obtained data used to calibrate and validate the model. At last, the calibration process is described, and the results are discussed. The calculated values fit the experimental data also in extrapolation, despite the model is simple and performs calculations within 7 s. Due to these characteristics, the model is suitable for being used in a larger model as a sub-component.

In this paper, the influence of clutch disk pre-damper mechanism constituents on the idle rattle phenomenon was investigated with an analytical model containing a new time-varying gear mesh stiffness function. Comparing experimental results to simulation results for the same excitation input was the key implementation for the validation of proposed model. The engine speed fluctuations represented in the simulation was imported from a speed measurement of a diesel engine in the test bench.
