Dielectric properties and structure of 0.015Yb2O3-xMgO doped 0.92BaTiO3-0.08(Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3 ceramics with x = 0.0–0.025 have been investigated. As Yb2O3-MgO was added into the BT-NBT, the phase changes from tetragonal to pseudo-cubic, with the tetragonality c/a decreases from 1.011 to 1.008 and XRD peaks broadened. The combined study of XRD and TEM image revealed a formation of core–shell structure in grains with core of 400–600 nm and the shell of a thickness 60–200 nm. There is a slowly phase transition against temperature from the variable temperature Raman analysis. The ferroelectric relaxor peak of BT-NBT decreases from ~4000 to ~2000 and a new broad dielectric peak with an equivalent maximum (εr′~2300) appears in the temperature dependent dielectric constant curve (εr′-T), which produces a flat εr′-T curve. Sample 0.92BaTiO3-0.08(Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3-0.015Yb2O3-0.005 MgO and 0.92BaTiO3-0.08(Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3-0.015Yb2O3-0.01MgO give a εr′ variation within ±14% and ±10% in 20–165 °C. The core–shell microstructure should take account for the flattened εr′–T behavior of these samples.

Near infrared (NIR) absorbing nanoparticles synthesized by the reduction of HAuCl4 with Na2S exhibited absorption bands at ∼530 nm, and in the NIR region of 650–1100 nm. The NIR optical properties were not found to be related to the earlier proposed Au2S–Au core-shell microstructure in previous studies. From a detailed study of the structure and microstructure of as-synthesized particles in this work, S-containing, Au-rich, multiply-twinned nanoparticles were found to exhibit NIR absorption. They consisted of amorphous AuxS (where x = 2), mostly well mixed within crystalline Au, with a small degree of surface segregation of S. Therefore, NIR absorption was likely due to interfacial effects on particle polarization from the introduction of AuxS into Au particles, and not the dielectric confinement of plasmons associated with a core-shell microstructure.

Abstract Lead free hybrid halide perovskite (CH3NH3)3Bi2Br9 has been successfully synthesized by mechano-chemical method. The microstructure analysis by Rietveld’s refinement method revealed that the crystal belongs to trigonal system with space group P3 ̅m1. The obtained microstructural parameters are well in agreement with the previously published data. Temperature-dependent ac conductivity, impedance spectroscopy, and complex dielectric properties have been investigated in detail. The negative temperature coefficient of resistance behaviour reveals the semiconducting nature of the materials. The complex impedance spectroscopy also supports the semiconducting nature of the sample with activation energy for conduction ~0.38 eV.

AbstractA three-dimensional model of the temperature and velocity distribution within any arbitrary-shaped ice mass is described. There is a mutual interaction in the model between the flow of the ice and its thermodynamics, since the flow law used in the model is temperature-dependent.Ice growth in three dimensions is governed by mass accumulation through precipitation, by mass depletion through loss of ice over the ocean, and by continuity requirements. Phase changes at the base of the ice are accounted for. The model has been applied in art exploratory manner to the Greenland ice sheet. Changes in the ice shape and temperature are presented and discussed. The basic shortcoming of the model as here presented appears primarily due to the coarse finite-difference mesh used, and to an unsophisticated approach to modelling the boundary ice.

Chaperonins are nanomachines that harness ATP hydrolysis to power and catalyze protein folding, chemical action that is directly linked to the maintenance of cell function through protein folding/refolding and assembly. GroEL and the GroEL-GroES complex are archetypal examples of such protein folding machines. Here, variable-temperature-electrospray ionization (vT-ESI) native mass spectrometry is used to delineate the effects of solution temperature and ATP concentrations on the stabilities of GroEL and GroEL/GroES complexes. The results show clear evidences for de-stabilization of both GroEL14 and GroES7 at temperatures of 50 oC and 45 oC, respectively, substantially below the pre-viously reported melting temperature (Tm ~ 70 oC). This destabilization is accompanied by temperature-dependent reaction products that have previously unreported stoichiometries, viz. GroEL14-GroESx-ATPy, where x = 1, 2, 8 and y = 0, 1, 2, that are also dependent on Mg2+ and ATP concentrations. Variable-temperature native mass spectrometry re-veals new insights about the stability of GroEL in response to several environmental effects: (i) temperature-dependent ATP binding to GroEL (ii) effects of temperature as well as Mg2+ and ATP concentrations on the stoichiome-try of the GroEL-GroES complex, with Mg2+ showing greater effects compared to ATP; and, (iii) a change in the temper-ature-dependent stoichiometries of the GroEL-GroES complex (GroEL14-GroES7 vs GroEL14-GroES8) between 24 to 56 oC. The similarities between results obtained using native MS and cryo-EM (Clare et al., An expanded protein folding cage in the GroEL-gp31 complex. J. Mol. Biol. 2006, 358, 905-11; Ranson et al., Allosteric signaling of ATP hydrolysis in GroEL–GroES complexes. Nat. Struct. Mol. Biol. 2006, 13, 147-152.) underscores the utility of native MS for investiga-tions of molecular machines as well as identification of key intermediates involved in the chaperone-assisted protein folding cycle.
