Background and Objectives: The present study demonstrates that apart from the well-known toxicity of liposoluble vitamins, some hydrosoluble vitamins may also exert toxicity; thus, routine supplementation with vitamins or ingestion of fortified foods should not be considered harmless. The study addresses the possible correlations between the physico-chemical properties and the side effects of vitamins when taken in high doses or for a too long a period. Materials and Methods: The FAFDrugs4.0 computational tool was used for computational assessment of the ADMET profile of several hydro- and liposoluble vitamins. Results: ADMET analysis revealed the following major data: vitamin B3 and B13 showed reduced structural complexity; thus, a relative toxicological potential may be exerted. Vitamins B1 and B7 were found to have good oral absorption and thus good bioavailability, while Vitamin B3 was found to have decreased oral absorption. In addition, all of the liposoluble vitamins reflected higher complexity, much greater than most of the potentially therapeutically-proven compounds. Conclusions: The present study emphasizes the importance between the physico-chemical properties of vitamins and their possible toxicological impact.

Kokum (Garcinia Indica) is an ancient fruit of India which is mostly consumed in the form of sarbat. It is mainly found in the western ghats in the state of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala. Kokum fruit is widely used in culinary, pharmaceutical, nutraceuticals uses. Kokum has a long history in Ayurvedic medicine as it was traditionally used to cure sores, dermatitis, diarrhoea, dysentery, ear infection and to facilitate digestion. The present study conducted to study Physico-Chemical Properties of Kokum Seed (Garcinia indica) Full Fat Flour and Defatted Flour and it reveals that defatted kokum seed flour is superior in quality in terms of protein, carohydrates, crude fiber and Vitamin B3 contain as compared to kokum seed flour. We can utilise the Kokum seed defatted flour to overcome protein malnutrition problems in developing countries.

In this study, broilers were fed with heavy-metal-containing diets (Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr, As, Hg) at three rates (T1: 5 kg premix/ton feed, T2: 10 kg premix/ton feed and T3: 15 kg premix/ton feed) and Doxycycline (DOX) and Gatifloxacin (GAT) at low or high doses (T4: 31.2 mg DOX/bird/day and 78 mg GAT/bird/day, T5: 15.6 mg DOX/bird/day and 48 mg GAT/bird/day) to assess the accumulation of various heavy metals and the fate of two antibiotics in broiler manure after 35 days of aerobic composting. The results indicated that the two antibiotics changed quite differently during aerobic composting. About 14.96–15.84% of Doxycycline still remained at the end of composting, while Gatifloxacin was almost completely removed within 10 days of composting. The half-lives of Doxycycline were 13.75 and 15.86 days, while the half-lives of Gatifloxacin were only 1.32 and 1.38 days. Based on the Redundancy analysis (RDA), the concentration of antibiotics was significantly influenced by physico-chemical properties (mainly temperature and pH) throughout the composting process. Throughout the composting process, all heavy metal elements remained concentrated in organic fertilizer. In this study the Cr content reached 160.16 mg/kg, 223.98 mg/kg and 248.02 mg/kg with increasing premix feed rates, similar to Zn, which reached 258.2 mg/kg, 312.21 mg/kg and 333.68 mg/kg. Zn and Cr concentrations well exceeded the United States and the European soil requirements. This experiment showed that antibiotic residues and the accumulation of heavy metals may lead to soil contamination and pose a risk to the soil ecosystem.

SummaryDermatan sulfate (DS) was administered by oral route in healthy human volunteers. The structure, physico-chemical properties and biological activity of DS purified from human plasma after oral administration were studied and compared with those of native DS.DS extracted and purified from pig mucosa has a relative molecular mass (Mr) of about 23,100 and is composed of about 10% nonsulfated disaccharide, 80% monosulfated disaccharides and about 10% disulfat-ed disaccharides, with a sulfate to carboxyl ratio of 1.00 and a heparin cofactor II (HCII) activity of about 160 units/mg. This native polysaccharide is composed of about 94% iduronic acid.One gram of native DS was orally administered to five healthy human volunteers, and 50 ml of blood were collected after 4 h. DS possibly present in plasma after oral administration was extracted and purified. About 130 ± 42 Μg of DS per 50 ml of blood were detected by agarose-gel electrophoresis and DMB assay. This DS shows a broad Mr range. After oral absorption, substantial amounts of species with a Mr of about 7,500 are detected in blood but chains with Mr ranging from 7,500 to 20,000 are also found. Moreover, some very low-Mr species are detected, with a prevalence of disaccharides. After oral absorption, DS is sulfated above all in position 4 of the N-acetyl-galactosamine (60%), with a sulfate to carboxyl ratio of about 0.64, demonstrating that DS is desulfated during or after oral absorption by about 30-40%. A small amount of disulfated disaccharide (in particular 2,4-disulfated, 1.4%) is preserved from catabolic processes, as DS extracted from human plasma is able to inhibit thrombin activity mediated by HCII (about 16 U/mg).

Honey bee venom is a unique mixture of biologically active proteins, enzymes and biogenic amines. It is used in medicine and pharmacy, and recently also in cosmetology. The study presents an analysis of bee venom as a cosmetic raw material, assesses its safety and effect on the skin, methods of obtaining it and its physico-chemical properties as well as its behavior in cosmetic solutions. Bee venom has a therapeutic effect in the treatment of acne, atopic dermatitis, alopecia and psoriasis, it also has a great anti-aging potential. Possible side effects, such as an allergic reaction or anaphylactic shock, raise doubts and limit the use of bee venom. Further research is needed on its properties, the method of its acquisition, processing and application in cosmetic formulas.

Fracturing under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV, p ≤ 10-9 Torr) produces membrane fracture faces devoid of contamination. Such clean surfaces are a prerequisite foe studies of interactions between condensing molecules is possible and surface forces are unequally distributed, the condensate will accumulate at places with high binding forces; crystallites will arise which may be useful a probes for surface sites with specific physico-chemical properties. Specific “decoration” with crystallites can be achieved nby exposing membrane fracture faces to water vopour. A device was developed which enables the production of pure water vapour and the controlled variation of its partial pressure in an UHV freeze-fracture apparatus (Fig.1a). Under vaccum (≤ 10-3 Torr), small container filled with copper-sulfate-pentahydrate is heated with a heating coil, with the temperature controlled by means of a thermocouple. The water of hydration thereby released enters a storage vessel.

SummaryPhysico-chemical properties of recombinant desulphatohirudin expressed in yeast (CIBA GEIGY code No. CGP 39393) were reinvestigated. As previously reported for natural hirudin, the recombinant molecule exhibited abnormal behaviour by gel filtration with an apparent molecular weight greater than that based on the primary structure. However, molecular weight estimation by SDS gel electrophoresis, FAB-mass spectrometry and Photon Correlation Spectroscopy were in agreement with the theoretical molecular weight, with little suggestion of dimer or aggregate formation. Circular dichroism studies of the recombinant molecule show similar spectra at different pH values but are markedly different from that reported by Konno et al. (13) for a natural hirudin-variant. Our CD studies indicate the presence of about 60% beta sheet and the absence of alpha helix in the secondary structure of recombinant hirudin, in agreement with the conformation determined by NMR studies (17)

ABSTRACT A description is given of experimental investigations and preliminary clinical experience with the long-acting oestriol compound polyoestriol phosphate – a water-soluble polymere of oestriol and phosphoric acid. The compound seems to exert all the physiologically important effects of oestriol. Even with high doses the hormone causes no proliferation of the endometrium and no withdrawal bleeding. It has no untoward effect on metabolism. It decreases slightly the cholesterol concentration (to the extent of ⅓–⅕ of the effect produced by long-acting oestradiol esters). The compound has a wide therapeutic range. No side-effects have been observed. Doses of 10 mg or more have a prolonged duration. Additional prolongation of the effect is largely dependent on dosage. To ensure an effect lasting for 4 weeks 40 mg polyoestriol phosphate (corresponding with 30 mg oestriol) is required – an amount which roughly corresponds with physiological quantitative data. The compound, which involves an interesting new principle of prolongation, was most effectively used in the treatment of menopausal symptoms and genital organic disorders. For these indications it can be recommended without reservation.
