We considered possibilities of an application of diffractive free-form optics in laser processing of metallic materials in aerospace production. Based on the solution of the inverse problem of heat conduction, an algorithm was developed that calculates the spatial distribution of the power density of laser irradiation in order to create the required thermal effect in materials. It was found that the use of diffractive optics for the laser beam shaping made it possible to obtain specified properties of processed materials. Laser thermal hardening of parts made of chrome–nickel–molybdenum steel was performed. This allowed us to increase the wear resistance due to the creation in the surface layer of a structure that has an increased hardness. In addition, a method of laser annealing of sheet materials from aluminum–magnesium alloy and low-alloy titanium alloys was developed. Application of this method has opened opportunities for expanding the forming options of these materials and for improving the precision in the manufacturing of aircraft engine parts. It was also shown that welding by a pulsed laser beam with a redistribution of power and energy density makes it possible to increase the strength of the welded joint of a heat-resistant nickel-based superalloy. Increasing the adhesion strength of gas turbine engine parts became possible by laser treatment using diffractive free-form optics.

Freestanding SiCNO ceramic pieces with sub-mm features were produced by laser crosslinking of carbosilane and silazane polymer precursors followed by pyrolysis in inert atmosphere. Three different pulsed UV laser systems were investigated, and the influence of laser wavelength, operating power and scanning speed were all found to be important. Different photoinitiators were tested for the two lasers operating at 355 nm, while for the 266 nm laser, crosslinking occurred also without photoinitiator. Pre-treatment of glass substrates with fluorinated silanes was found to ease the release of green bodies during solvent development. Polymer crosslinking was observed with all three of the laser systems, as were bubbles, surface charring and in some cases ablation. By focusing the laser beam several millimeters above the surface of the resin, selective polymer crosslinking was observed exclusively.

Abstract Inconel 713C precision castings are used as aircraft engine components exposed to high temperatures and the aggressive exhaust gas environment. Industrial experience has shown that precision-cast components of such complexity contain casting defects like microshrinkage, porosity, and cracks. This necessitates the development of repair technologies for castings of this type. This paper presents the results of metallographic examinations of melted areas and clad welds on the Inconel 713C nickel-based superalloy, made by TIG, plasma arc, and laser. The cladding process was carried out on model test plates in order to determine the technological and material-related problems connected with the weldability of Inconel 713C. The studies included analyses of the macro- and microstructure of the clad welds, the base materials, and the heat-affected zones. The results of the structural analyses of the clad welds indicate that Inconel 713C should be classified as a low-weldability material. In the clad welds made by laser, cracks were identified mainly in the heat-affected zone and at the melted zone interface, crystals were formed on partially-melted grains. Cracks of this type were not identified in the clad welds made using the plasma-arc method. It has been concluded that due to the possibility of manual cladding and the absence of welding imperfections, the technology having the greatest potential for application is plasma-arc cladding.

The development of new reusable space launch vehicle concepts has lead to the need for more advanced engine cycles. Many two-stage vehicle concepts rely on advanced gas turbine engines that can propel the first stage of the launch vehicle from a runway up to Mach 5 or faster. One prospective engine for these vehicles is the Air Turborocket (ATR). The ATR is an innovative aircraft engine flowpath that is intended to extend the operating range of a conventional gas turbine engine. This is done by moving the turbine out of the core engine flow, alleviating the traditional limit on the turbine inlet temperature. This paper presents the analysis of an ATR engine for a reusable space launch vehicle and some of the practical problems that will be encountered in the development of this engine.

Abstract Application of laser welding technology requires that the laser beam is guided through the whole length of the joint with sufficiently high accuracy. This paper describes result of research on development of optomechatronic system that allows for the precise positioning of the laser head’s TCP point on the edge of welded elements during laser processing. The developed system allows for compensation of workpiece’s fixture inaccuracies, precast distortions and workpiece deformations occurring during the process.

ABSTRACTA KrF (248 nm) excimer laser with a 38 ns pulse width was used to study pulsed laser annealing of AIN/GaN bi-layers and dopant activation of Mg-implanted GaN thin films. For the AIN/GaN bi-layers, cathodoluminescence (CL) showed an increase in the intensity of the GaN band-edge peak at 3.47 eV after pulsed laser annealing at an energy density of 2000 mJ/cm2. Rutherford backscattering spectrometry of a Mg-implanted A1N (75 nm thick)/GaN (1.0 μm thick) thin-film heterostructure showed a 20% reduction of the 4He+ backscattering yield after laser annealing at an energy density of 400 mJ/cm2. CL measurements revealed a 410 nm emission peak indicating the incorporation of Mg after laser processing.

AbstractA novel method to control the recrystallization depth of amorphous silicon (a-Si) film during the excimer laser annealing (ELA) is proposed in order to preserve a-Si that is useful for fabrication of poly-Si TFT with a-Si offset in the channel. A XeCl excimer laser beam is irradiated on a triple film structure of a-Si thin native silicon oxide (~20Å)/thick a-Si layer. Only the upper a-Si film is recrystallized by the laser beam irradiation, whereas the lower thick a-Si film remains amorphous because the thin native silicon oxide layer stops the grain growth of the poly-crystalline silicon (poly-Si). So that the thin oxide film sharply divides the upper poly-Si from the lower a-Si.

Kalman filters are widely used in the turbine engine community for health monitoring purpose. This algorithm has proven its capability to track gradual deterioration with a good accuracy. On the other hand, its response to rapid deterioration is either a long delay in recognising the fault, and/or a spread of the estimated fault on several components. The main reason of this deficiency lies in the transition model of the parameters that is blended in the Kalman filter and assumes a smooth evolution of the engine condition. This contribution reports the development of an adaptive diagnosis tool that combines a Kalman filter and a secondary system that monitors the residuals. This auxiliary component implements a Generalised Likelihood Ratio Test in order to detect and estimate an abrupt fault. The enhancement in terms of accuracy and reactivity brought by this adaptive Kalman filter is highlighted for a variety of simulated fault cases that may be encountered on a commercial aircraft engine.
