Wildfires produce smoke that can carry organic compounds to a vineyard, which are then absorbed by the grape berry and result in wines with elevated levels of smoke-related phenols. These phenols have been found to have a large impact on the flavor of wines, being the cause of a smokey flavor with a lasting ashy aftertaste. When evaluating the sensory profile of these wines, there is an observed problem due to the lasting nature of these undesirable attributes and potential flavor carryover between samples. Through the use of standard and temporal attribute check-all-that-apply, this research desires to better understand the impact of smoke on the sensorial profiles of wines with various levels of smoke phenols (high, moderate, and low). Additionally, through the employment of different interstimulus protocols, the effectiveness of rinses on diminishing the smoke flavor in wines and optimal time separation were investigated. It was determined that a 1 g/L pectin rinse in between samples with a 120 s separation is optimal to ensure the removal of smoke attribute perception. This work also indicated the need to look deeper at the effects of the in-mouth hydrolysis of glyconjugate phenols that impact overall smoke flavor.

Исследуется влияние минерального и органического связующего на термостойкость и показатель разрушающего усилия композиционных сорбционных материалов на основе стеклянных волокон. Рассматриваемый материал используется для сорбции органических соединений при низких концентрациях. Изучение влияния на эти два показателя вызвано тем, что материал, описываемый в настоящей статье, требует определенной технологической прочности и должен выдерживать температуры 300 °С. Для достижения требуемых параметров для материала исследовались три типа связующего: 1. Полиядерные комплексы алюминия, полученные в результате гидролиза хлорида алюминия; 2. Полиядерные комплексы алюминия, полученные в результате гидролиза сульфата алюминия; 3. Сульфатная небеленая целлюлоза. По результатам исследования было выявлено наиболее подходящее связующее для сорбционного композиционного материала и определено оптимальное процентное содержание этого связующего. Discusses the influence of mineral and organic binders on the heat resistance and the index of the destructive force of composite sorption materials based on glass fibers. This material is used for sorption of organic compounds at low concentrations. Consideration of the impact on these two indicators is caused by the fact that the material described in this article requires a certain technological strength and must withstand temperatures of 300 °C. To achieve the required parameters for the material, three types of binder were studied: 1. Polynuclear complexes of aluminium, obtained by hydrolysis with aluminium chloride; 2. Polynuclear complexes of aluminium, obtained by hydrolysis of aluminium sulfate; 3. Sulfate unbleached cellulose. According to the results of the study, the most suitable binder for the sorption composite material was identified and the optimal percentage of this binder was determined.

ABSTRACT Guinea pigs, kept on a iodine-sufficient diet, were injected with Na131I and the thyroids excised from 45 seconds to 5 days later. The thyroid tissue was homogenized and separated into a combined nuclear-mitochondrial-microsomal fraction and a supernatant fraction by centrifugation at 140 000 g for one hour. Protein bound 131iodine (PB131I) and free 131iodide were determined in the fractions and the PB131I was analysed for monoiodotyrosine (MIT), diiodotyrosine (DIT) and thyroxine after hydrolysis of PB131I. As early as only 20 minutes after the Na131I-injection almost 100% of the particulate fraction 131I was protein bound. In the supernatant fraction the protein binding was somewhat less rapid and PB131I values above 90% of total supernatant 131I were not found until 3 hours after the injection. In all experiments the total amount of PB131I was higher in the supernatant than in the corresponding particulate fraction. The ratio between supernatant PB131I and pellet PB131I was lower in experiments up to 3 minutes and from 2 to 5 days than in experiments of 6 minutes to 20 hours. Hydrolysis of PB131I yielded, even in the shortest experiments, both MIT and DIT. The DIT/MIT ratio was lower in the experiments up to 2 hours than in those of 3 hours and over.

AbstractThe in vitro diagnostic medical devices regulation (IVDR) will take effect in May 2022. This regulation has a large impact on both the manufacturers of in vitro diagnostic medical devices (IVD) and clinical laboratories. For clinical laboratories, the IVDR poses restrictions on the use of laboratory developed tests (LDTs). To provide a uniform interpretation of the IVDR for colleagues in clinical practice, the IVDR Task Force was created by the scientific societies of laboratory specialties in the Netherlands. A guidance document with explanations and interpretations of relevant passages of the IVDR was drafted to help laboratories prepare for the impact of this new legislation. Feedback from interested parties and stakeholders was collected and used to further improve the document. Here we would like to present our approach to our European colleagues and inform them about the impact of the IVDR and, importantly we would like to present potentially useful approaches to fulfill the requirements of the IVDR for LDTs.

OBJECTIVE: the present work proposed to extract Locust Bean Gum (LBG) from Algerian carob fruits, evaluate physicochemical and rheological properties (solubility). It aimed also to develop different formulations of strawberry jams with a mixture of LBG and pectin in order to obtain a product with a high sensory acceptance. METHODS: the physicochemical characteristics of LBG were assessed. The impact of temperature on solubility was also studied. The physical and the sensory profile and acceptance of five Jams were evaluated. RESULTS: composition results revealed that LBG presented a high level of carbohydrate but low concentrations of fat and ash. The LBG was partially cold-water-soluble (∼62% at 25°C) and needed heating to reach a higher solubility value (∼89% at 80 °C). Overall, the sensorial acceptances decreased in jams J3 which was formulated with 100% pectin and commercial one (J5). The external preference map explained that most consumers were located to the right side of the map providing evidence that most samples appreciated were J4 and J2 (rate of 80–100%). CONCLUSION: In this investigation, the LBG was used successfully in the strawberry jam’s formulation.

Saliva has diverse functions in feeding behavior of animals. However, the impact of salivary digestion of food on insect gustatory information processing is poorly documented. Glucose-aversion (GA) in the German cockroach, Blattella germanica, is a highly adaptive heritable behavioral resistance trait that protects the cockroach from ingesting glucose-containing-insecticide-baits. In this study, we confirmed that GA cockroaches rejected glucose, but they accepted oligosaccharides. However, whereas wild-type cockroaches that accepted glucose also satiated on oligosaccharides, GA cockroaches ceased ingesting the oligosaccharides within seconds, resulting in significantly lower consumption. We hypothesized that saliva might hydrolyze oligosaccharides, releasing glucose and terminating feeding. By mixing artificially collected cockroach saliva with various oligosaccharides, we demonstrated oligosaccharide-aversion in GA cockroaches. Acarbose, an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor, prevented the accumulation of glucose and rescued the phagostimulatory response and ingestion of oligosaccharides. Our results indicate that pre-oral and oral hydrolysis of oligosaccharides by salivary alpha-glucosidases released glucose, which was then processed by the gustatory system of GA cockroaches as a deterrent and caused the rejection of food. We suggest that the genetic mechanism of glucose-aversion support an extended aversion phenotype that includes glucose-containing oligosaccharides. Salivary digestion protects the cockroach from ingesting toxic chemicals and thus could support the rapid evolution of behavioral and physiological resistance in cockroach populations.

Due to the fact that intelligent algorithms such as Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Differential Evolution (DE) are susceptible to local optima and the efficiency of solving an optimal solution is low when solving the optimal trajectory, this paper uses the Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) algorithm for the optimal trajectory planning of a hydraulic robotic excavator. To achieve high efficiency and stationarity during the operation of the hydraulic robotic excavator, the trade-off between the time and jerk is considered. Cubic splines were used to interpolate in joint space, and the optimal time-jerk trajectory was obtained using the SQP with joint angular velocity, angular acceleration, and jerk as constraints. The optimal angle curves of each joint were obtained, and the optimal time-jerk trajectory planning of the excavator was realized. Experimental results show that the SQP method under the same weight is more efficient in solving the optimal solution and the optimal excavating trajectory is smoother, and each joint can reach the target point with smaller angular velocity, and acceleration change, which avoids the impact of each joint during operation and conserves working time. Finally, the excavator autonomous operation becomes more stable and efficient.

The work carried out studies of the physicomechanical properties of polysulfide sealants of brands of U-30M and UT-31 after thermal, light aging, and the assessment of mushrooms. The data on the resistance of sealants of brands U-30M and UT-31 are investigated and summarized after the impact of accelerated climatic tests and aggressive environments. The optimal time and conditions for the storage of vulcanized sealants in the unattended state and components of sealants in warehouse conditions are determined, as well as the causes of different storage of sealing pastes based on liquid thiocola.

The conditions for the hardening of tools in accordance with the author’s technological routes in the optimal time interval are considered using the functional dependence of the serviceability of plasma generators. This dependence takes into account the workability of the technical devices involved in processing the laying batch of tools in the speci ed time interval. The probability of performing the production process in the estimated time is represented by the product of the trouble-free operation of each glow discharge plasma generator involved in the nishing processing of tools that require a different type of plasma exposure in a certain sequence and duration.

Abstract. Emissions from ships at berth play an important role regarding the exposure of high density human populations to atmospheric pollutants in port areas; however, these emissions are not well understood. In this study, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particle emissions from 20 container ships at berth were sampled and analyzed during the “fuel switch” period at Jingtang Port in Hebei Province, China. VOCs and particles were analyzed using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) and a single particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SPAMS), respectively. VOC analysis showed that alkanes and aromatics, especially benzene, toluene and heavier compounds e.g., n-heptane, n-octane and n-nonane, dominated the total identified species. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) yields and ozone (O3) forming potential were 0.017 ± 0.007 g SOA g−1 VOCs and 2.63 ± 0.37 g O3 g−1 VOCs, respectively. Both positive and negative ion mass spectra from individual ships were derived and the intensity of specific ions were quantified. Results showed that elemental carbon (35.74 %), elemental carbon–organic carbon mixtures (33.95 %) and Na-rich particles (21.12 %) were major classes, comprising 90.7 % of the particles observed. Particles from ship auxiliary engines were in the 0.2 to 2.5 µm size range, with a peak occurring at around 0.4 µm. The issue of using vanadium (V) as tracer element was examined, and it was found that V was not a proper tracer of ship emissions when using low sulfur content diesel oil. The average percentage of sulfate particles observed in shipping emissions before and after switching to marine diesel oil remained unchanged at 24 %. Under certain wind conditions, when berths were upwind of emission sources, the ratios before and after 1 January were 35 and 27 % respectively. The impact of atmospheric stability was discussed based on PM2.5 and primary pollutant (carbon monoxide) concentration. With a background of frequent haze episodes and complex mechanisms of particulate accumulation and secondary formation, the impact of atmospheric stability is believed to have been weak on the sulfate contribution from shipping emissions. The results from this study provide robust support for port area air quality assessment and source apportionment.
