In this study, we report a low cost, fast and unexplored electrochemical synthesis strategy of copper oxide nanoneedles films as well as their morphological and chemical characterization. The nanostructured films were prepared using electrochemical anodization in alkaline electrolyte solutions of ethylene glycol, water and fluoride ions. The film morphology shows nanoneedle-shaped structures, with lengths up to 1–2 μm; meanwhile, high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HRXPS) and spectroscopy Raman analyses indicate that a mixture of Cu(II) and Cu(I) oxides, or only Cu(I) oxide, is obtained as the percentage of water in the electrolyte solution decreases. A preliminary study was also carried out for the photocatalytic degradation of the methylene blue (MB) dye under irradiation with simulated sunlight in the presence of the nanoneedles obtained, presenting a maximum degradation value of 88% of MB and, thus, demonstrating the potential characteristics of the material investigated in the degradation of organic dyes.

Water is the most crucial thing to mankind and so its contamination by various agencies is posing a threat to the natural balance. So, in the present work, the efficiency of various adsorbents derived from plant waste, to remove different dyes from aqueous solution was evaluated. Parameters for study were contact time, concentration and pH. Various combinations of plant ashes were used for the study. It was found that adsorbent prepared from the combination of orange peels, pomegranate and banana peels ashes, exhibited good adsorption capacity for methylene blue, congo red and crystal violet. All these dyes were completely removed from the aqueous solution while methyl orange was not removed. Congo red was removed completely within 40 min of contact with the adsorbent while methyl orange took 3 hrs to be removed to the extent of 48% only. The adsorption coefficient of congo red was found to be 2.33 while value for methylene blue and crystal violet was 1 and 1.66 respectively. The characterization of adsorbent was done by Scanning Electron Microscopy and IR spectroscopy. SEM image revealed the surface of adsorbent to be made of differential pores. From the results it became evident that the low-cost adsorbent could be used as a replacement for costly traditional methods of removing colorants from water.

Tunics corm saffron (TCS) is a low-cost adsorbent that removes methylene blue (MB) from an aqueous solution. The TCS was characterized using FTIR and SEM analysis. The influence of MB adsorption variables such as TCS dose (0.4–2.4 g L−1), contact time (0–120 min), MB dye concentration (100–500 mg L−1) was optimized Box–Behnken design (BBD) combined with response surface methodology (RSM) modeling. All three variables among the main parameters significantly affected the removal efficiency by applying the quadratic regression analysis. The results showed that the predicted values for MB adsorption were close to the experimental values and were in good agreement. Besides, the r2 value (r2=0.970) indicates that the regression can predict response for the adsorption process in the studied range. The optimum BBD-RSM for MB removal of 89.48 % was recorded at a TCS dose of 1.78 g L−1, contact time of 56 min, MB dye concentration of 176 mg L–1 at solution pH of 5.4 temperature 21 °C. Excellent regeneration of TCS to remove MB in sixth consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles. This work highlights that TCS offers tremendous potential as a low-cost for organic dyes removal from wastewaters.

Improper disposal of effluent contaminated with organic dyes may cause environmental problems. In this context, the ZnO semiconductor and the ZnO/ZnFe2O4 magnetic composite were prepared by the combustion method. The synthesized materials showed adsorption and photocatalysis properties for elimination of methylene blue dye from aqueous medium. About 88% of the methylene blue was eliminated by ZnO and 63% by the composite. In the photocatalysis process, a low cost visible light source was used. These materials can be regenerated by a photo-Fenton process. Moreover, the ZnO/ZnFe2O4 composite can be separated from the reaction medium by a magnetic field.

It was found previously that neither monomer MoS2 nor WO3 is an ideal material for the adsorption of organic dyes, while MoS2/WO3 composites synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal method have outstanding adsorption effects. In this work, the chemical state of each element was found to be changed after combination by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, which lead to their differences in adsorption performance. Moreover, the adsorption test of methylene blue on MoS2/WO3 composites was carried out under a series of temperatures, showing that the prepared composites also had appreciable adsorption rates at lower temperatures. The adsorption process could be well described by the Freundlich isothermal model and the pseudo-second order model. In addition, the particle-internal diffusion model simulation revealed that the internal diffusion of the particles played an important role in the whole adsorption process.

Photodegradation is a save and low cost methods to clean water bodies from some organic pollutants. The method has been developed in term of increasing the efficiency of the degradation capacity of photocatalyst. The photocatalyst working under visible light is the most desirable. The preparation of silica supported nickel-copper oxide [(Ni-Cu)Ox@SiO2] catalyst and the use of the catalyst in the photodegradation of methylene blue in the water are reported. The catalyst was prepared by impregnating the silica support into the mixture of nickel and copper salts, followed by calcination at 800○C for 4 hours. A series method of XRD, SEM-EDX, and UV-Vis Diffuse Reflectance has been used to characterize the catalyst. The catalyst adsorption test was undertaken in the dark, and the catalyst activity test for photodegradation of methylene blue was conducted under the sunlight. The XRD diffractogram of as prepared (Ni-Cu)Ox@SiO2 shows a weak-wide peak at 2θ = 21.8° indicating SiO2 tridymite, and has a crystallite size of 10.38 nm. The combination method of SEM and EDX confirms the formation of (Ni-Cu)Ox@SiO2. The (Ni-Cu)Ox@SiO2 catalyst has a relatively low bandgap energy and shows a good activity for photodegradation of blue methylene under sunlight. The adsorption of the methylene blue on the (Ni-Cu)Ox@SiO2 follows the Langmuir isotherm pattern.

Valorization of lignin is still an open question and lignin has therefore remained an underutilized biomaterial. This situation is even more pronounced for hydrolysis lignin, which is characterized by a highly condensed and excessively cross-linked structure. We report on photoactive lignin/Bi4O5Br2/BiOBr bio-inorganic composites consisting of a lignin substrate that is coated by Bi4O5Br2/BiOBr nanosheet photocatalysts. The structure of the hybrid material was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy including energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, and solid state 1H−13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H−13C NMR). The material contains 18.9% of Bi4O5Br2/BiOBr and was found to be effective for the photocatalytic degradation of cationic methylene blue (MB) and zwitterionic rhodamine B (RhB) dyes under irradiation with 405 nm light. Lignin/Bi4O5Br2/BiOBr was able to decrease the dye concentration from 80 mg·L–1 to 12.3 mg·L–1 for RhB (85%) and from 80 mg·L–1 to 4.4 mg·L–1 for MB (95%). Complementary to the dye degradation, the lignin as a main component of the composite, was found to be efficient and rapid biosorbent for metal ions in aqueous solutions. The highest adsorption capacity was found after 2 hours of phases contact and reached 0.45 mmol·g–1 for Ni(II) ions (neutral media). The low cost, simplicity of the synthesis, good stability and ability to simultaneously photooxidize organic dyes and to adsorb metal ions, make the developed photoactive lignin/Bi4O5Br2/BiOBr composite a prospective material for textile wastewaters remediation

The sulfur-doped carbon nitride/cobalt ferrite nanocomposite (SCN/CoFe2O4) was prepared via ultrasonication and studied for the sonocatalytic degradation of wastewater organic dye pollutants including methylene blue, rhodamine B, and Congo red. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the presence and atomic ratios of S, C, N, Co, Fe, and O elements and their corresponding bonds with Co2+ and Fe3+ cations. The nanocomposite was found to have aggregated nanoparticles on a sheet-like structure. The bandgap energy was estimated to be 1.85 eV. For the sonocatalytic degradation of 25-ppm methylene blue at 20 kHz, 1 W and 50% amplitude, the best operating condition was determined to be 1 g/L of catalyst dosage and 4 vol % of hydrogen peroxide loading. Under this condition, the sonocatalytic removal efficiency was the highest at 96% within a reaction period of 20 min. SCN/CoFe2O4 outperformed SCN and CoFe2O4 by 2.2 and 6.8 times, respectively. The SCN/CoFe2O4 nanocomposite was also found to have good reusability with a drop of only 7% after the fifth cycle. However, the degradation efficiencies were low when tested with rhodamine B and Congo red due to difference in dye sizes, structural compositions, and electric charges.

Titanium dioxide remains one of the most studied semiconductor for photocatalytic applications due to its low cost production, reduced toxicity, ability to break down the organic pollutants and possibility to achieve complete mineralization. In this work, we report on results of the photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide nanotubes fabricated by electrochemical anodization technique in an electrolyte solution containing a mixture of hydrofluoric acid, ethylene glycol and phosphoric acid. The morphology and crystallinity of the obtained nanotubes were investigated by means of electron microscopy and it was found that nanotubes have a constant outer diameter of 200 nm and an internal conical shape where the diameter gradually decreases from 120 nm at the wide end to 50 nm at the narrow end. The transmission electron microscopy investigation defined two different phases of titanium dioxide obtained after annealing of amorphous TiO2 in air at 650 °C and 850 °C. Photocatalytic activity of the samples have been evaluated in methylene blue solution in the presence of dispersed nanotubes under visible and UV irradiation by means of UV/Vis spectroscopy. Anatase phase TiO2 shows the best performance degrading 85 % of dye in 25 min under UV illumination, while rutile phase with anatase inclusions shows the best results with a 50 % decay of dye concentration in 25 min under visible light illumination.
