We have synthesized sulfonamide based nano-composites of SiO2 and TiO2 for selective and sensitive determination of toxic metal ion Hg2+ in aqueous medium. Nano-composites (11) and (12) were morphologically characterized with FT-IR, solid state NMR, UV-vis, FE SEM, TEM, EDX, BET, pXRD and elemental analysis. The comparative sensing behavior, pH effect and sensor concentrations were carried out with fluorescence signaling on spectrofluorometer and nano-composites (11) and (12), both were evaluated as “turn-on” fluorescence detector for the toxic Hg2+ ions. The LODs were calculated to be 41.2 and 18.8 nM, respectively of nano-composites (11) and (12). The detection limit of TiO2 based nano-composites was found comparatively lower than the SiO2 based nano-composites.

Sorghum bicolor (S.B.) is used in this work for preparing chemically modified adsorbent for toxic metal ions, i.e., cadmium(II) and copper(II). Thiourea is selected for chemical modification of this plant waste by microwave solid fusion methodology, so that its chelating ability for metal ions can be enhanced in both acidic and basic conditions, in a cheaper and quicker way. Characterization was carried out by different physiochemical means using FT-IR, SEM, etc. An increase in pHpzc value was observed in TSB, which is confirmed by FT-IR analysis. The effect of biosorption process parameters was also studied and found that maximum removal of these toxic ions occurred in slightly acidic pH (5-6) conditions, following pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Boyd plots indicated that film dispersion mode was the rate-determining step. Langmuir model indicated that the maximum metal ion removal capacity of TSB was 17.241 mg/g and 15.151 mg/g for cadmium(II) and copper(II) ions. So, TSB can be used on a larger scale for toxic metal ion removal by Sorghum bicolor waste in a cleaner way.

An optical analytical sensor was proposed based on the complexation reactions of 1,10-phenanthroline derivative in aqueous solutions. This study aims to synthesize a metal ion sensor for detecting Fe(ll) ion from the immobilization of 1,10-phenanthroline compound in alginate/pectin film. This was carried out by characterizing the films using the Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The determination of the optimal condition for Fe(II) ion detection and validation of the parameters was conducted by measuring the absorbance of the films using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. After the addition of Fe(II) ion, the color of the alginate/pectin-phenanthroline film changed from transparent yellow to orange-red, showing its potential as a visual colorimetric sensor for iron(II) ion. It was found that the optimum condition for Fe(II) ion sensing was at 513 nm after 2 min of detection at pH 2. The alginate/pectin-phenanthroline film had good linearity, precision, selectivity, and accuracy with a detection limit as low as 0.446 mg L–1, which was remarkable.

This is the second paper belonging to a study concerning the authentication of ancient easel-paintings, on canvas and wood support, from private and public collections, by using the FT-IR spectrophotometry technique for the analysis of the painting materials. Different pigments, egg binders, caseins and animal glue, often found in ancient easel-paintings on wood or canvas, have been used as standards for establishing the ageing rate of the paintings by correlation with the dates presented in the first note. The determination of the degradation rate of the painting materials is an important archaeometric characteristic used in authentication.
