Calcium phosphate (CaP)-based ceramic–biopolymer composites can be regarded as innovative bioresorbable coatings for load-bearing implants that can promote the osseointegration process. The carbonated hydroxyapatite (cHAp) phase is the most suitable CaP form, since it has the highest similarity to the mineral phase in human bones. In this paper, we investigated the effect of wet chemical preparation parameters on the formation of different CaP phases and compared their morphological and structural characteristics. The results revealed that the shape and crystallinity of CaP particles were strongly dependent on the post-treatment methods, such as heat or alkaline treatment of as-precipitated powders. In the next step, the optimised cHAp particles have been embedded into two types of biopolymers, such as polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and cellulose acetate (CA). The pure polymer fibres and the cHAp–biopolymer composites were produced using a novel electrospinning technique. The SEM images showed the differences between the morphology and network of CA and PVP fibres as well as proved the successful attachment of cHAp particles. In both cases, the fibres were partially covered with cHAp clusters. The SEM measurements on samples after one week of immersion in PBS solution evidenced the biodegradability of the cHAp–biopolymer composites.

Calcium phosphate (CaP) biomaterials containing Chinese medicine, Danshen (Salvia Miltiorrhiza Bunge, SMB), have been synthesized in our previous study via the wet chemical method. However, CaP biomaterials were generally synthesized in the alkaline solution. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of pH on SMB and the influence of SMB on the synthesis of CaP biomaterials. The SMB solutions of different pH from 5.0 to 10.0, were scanned with the UV-VIS spectrophotometer (UV-VIS) in the wavelength ranged from 200.00 to 400.00 nm. CaP biomaterials containing SMB were synthesized from (NH4)2HPO4, Ca(NO3)2, NH4OH and SMB. The filtrates of the wet synthesis of CaP biomaterials containing SMB were measured by UV-VIS. The synthesized CaP biomaterials containing SMB were characterized by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that the maximum absorption peak appeared at 281.00 nm for solutions of pH 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0. Although there were a new absorption peaks as the pH were 8.0 and 9.0, the absorption curves of SMB became similar to that of SMB as pH at 7.0 after the pH were readjusted to 7.0. The absorption peak appeared an Einstein shift to 347.00 nm at pH 10.0, which did not return to 281.00 nm when the pH of SMB solution was readjusted to 7.0. The absorption peak of filtrates containing SMB of CaP biomaterials reaction system was still at 281.00 nm when their pH was 7.0 and 8.0. Moreover, SMB had no obvious effect on the phase component and functional groups of products. Hence, it could be predicted that calcium phosphate biomaterials containing SMB, such as DCPD and TCP containing SMB, which could be prepared at the pH ranged from 5.0 to 9.0.

The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) sensing layers were studied using ZnO nanomaterials with different morphologies including hierarchical nanostructure (ZnO-H), nanorods (ZnO-NRs), commercial nanoparticles (ZnO-CNPs) and wet chemical synthesized nanoparticles (ZnO-HNPs). ZnO hierarchical structure was fabricated by an electrospinning technique followed by hydrothermal process. ZnO vertical nanorods structure was fabricated by hydrothermal method, while ZnO nanoparticles based sensors were prepared from commercial powder and wet chemical method. The morphology and properties of the fabricated samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). VOCs sensing responses toward acetone, ethanol and methanol with respect to altered ZnO nanostructureswas systematically compared at different working temperatures. The enhanced response at low working temperatures induced by theopen space hierarchical structure was observed. The VOCs sensing mechanisms of the ZnO nanostructures based sensing layer were also explained and discussed in detail.

Abstract The principal intention of this work is to fabricate and characterize the polyamide/chitosan nanocomposite by a novel single solvent method through the electrospinning procedure. The thermal properties and morphology of prepared nanocomposite are studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). TGA exposed that the primary decomposition temperature is reduced with rising of chitosan content in the nanocomposites and origin disintegration temperature for polyamide/chitosan nanocomposites is perceived to be in the range from 300 to 500°C. Also, FE-SEM images demonstrated that the nanofibers of chitosan have good adhesion on the matrix and are well-oriented. Besides, the crystallinity and structural characteristics of the polyamide/chitosan nanocomposites are investigated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), respectively. The results of XRD proved that the successful blending of chitosan in polyamide is achieved via the electrospinning method. FT-IR results demonstrate that the nanofibers are consist of amine groups. Also, the electrical properties of the nanocomposite improved with the increasing content of chitosan and the conductivity of the polyamide/chitosan 5 wt% demonstrates the maximum current of 0.3 nA. Besides, the sheet resistance of the composite reduced 118 to 20 × 109 Ω with raising the chitosan volume from 0 to 5 wt%.
