Calendula officinalis, Ribes nigrum, and Vaccinium myrtillus (CRV) possess a high phenolic compound content with excellent antioxidant activity. Dietary antioxidants can reduce exercise-induced oxidative stress. Consumption of large amounts of phenolic compounds is positively correlated with reduction in exercise-induced muscle damage. Research for natural products to improve exercise capacity, relieve fatigue, and accelerate fatigue alleviation is ongoing. Here, CRV containing a large total phenolic content (13.4 mg/g of CRV) demonstrated antioxidant activity. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography quantification revealed 1.95 ± 0.02 mg of salidroside in 1 g of CRV. In the current study, CRV were administered to mice for five weeks, and the antifatigue effect of CRV was evaluated using the forelimb grip strength test; weight-loaded swimming test; and measurement of fatigue-related biochemical indicators, such as blood lactate, ammonia, glucose, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatine kinase (CK) activity; and muscle and liver glycogen content. The results indicated that in CRV-treated mice, the forelimb grip strength significantly increased; weight-loaded swimming time prolonged; their lactate, ammonia, BUN, and CK activity decreased, and muscle and liver glucose and glycogen content increased compared with the vehicle group. Thus, CRV have antifatigue activity and can increase exercise tolerance.

Edible flowers have been used as ingredients because of their biological activities, taste, and overall appearance. This research was aimed to characterize the chemical composition and in vitro antioxidant activity of the marigold flower (Calendula officinalis L.) extracted with different proportions of water and ethyl alcohol, and the lyophilized extract with higher content of antioxidant compounds was incorporated into an organic yogurt. Results showed that the hydroalcoholic extract (50:50 v/v) presented the highest total phenolic content (TPC), flavonoids, and antioxidant activity (ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), total reducing capacity (TRC), and Cu2+/Fe2+ chelating ability). Phenolic acids and flavonoids were quantified in the extract by LC-DAD, while 19 compounds were tentatively identified by ESI-MS/MS. The lyophilized marigold extract (LME) also inhibited 12% of Wistar rat’s brain lipid oxidation in vitro, inhibited α-amylase, and α-glucosidase activities, but showed no cytotoxicity towards cancerous cells (HCT8 and A549). However, marigold flower extract protected human erythrocytes against mechanical stress. When added into an organic yogurt model (0 to 1.5%), LME increased TPC and antioxidant activity (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and TRC), and the sensory analysis showed that the organic yogurt had an acceptance of 80.4%. Our results show that the use of LME may be a technological strategy to increase the content of bioactive compounds in yogurts.

The search for natural antioxidants to replace synthetic antioxidants is one of humanity’s health priorities. Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAP) contain phenolic compounds that act as natural antioxidants. The aim of this work is to study total phenols and flavonoids contents and evaluate the antioxidant power of various extracts of Calendula officinalis. Extracts were prepared in two steps: hot solid-liquid extraction, by Soxhlet and from the plant powder using a solvent (Methanol/water 70/30, Acetone/water 70/30) followed by a liquid-liquid extraction by splitting the obtained extract by two increasingly polarized solvents (Ethyl acetate and Butanol). Total phenols and flavonoids were evaluated using gallic acid and quercetin as standards, respectively. The antioxidant activity of extracts was determined by DPPH (2,2-diphényl 1-picrylhydrazyle) free radical reduction method. The two crude fractions of Methanol and Acetone presented the highest levels of total phenols (7,58±0,38 mg GAE/g dm and 6,80±0,34 mg GAE/g dm respectively), and flavonoids (7,37±0,37 mg QE/g dm and 7,93±0,40 mg QE/g dm respectively). Ethyl acetate fractions showed a high antioxidant activity. This study demonstrated that extracts from Calendula officinalis flowers present a promising source of natural antioxidant.


Microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD) was used as an ecofriendly method to extract the essential oils from flowers and leaves of Calendula officinalis L. cultivated in Algeria. The results obtained were compared with the conventional extraction method, hydrodistillation (HD), and analyzed by gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and GC-MS. For flowers oils, 33 compounds were identified with HD method vs 20 compounds with MAHD method. For leaves, 26 compounds were identified with HD method vs 19 compounds identified with MAHD method. It is interesting to note, furthermore, that the use of MAHD method during 90 min allowed us to obtain relatively similar yields than HD method during 180 min. The main abundant volatile constituent was αcadinol with 31.9±0.71% for HD vs 39.7±0.26% for MAHD in leaves oils and 32.3±0.26% for HD vs 37.1±0.30% for MAHD in flowers oils. The oxygenated sesquiterpens was the most represented group of natural compounds contributing to the chemical composition in all oils. In the other hand, extraction of total phenolic compounds (TPC) and total flavonoids (TFC) was affected by the solvent type and, thus, 100% methanol was the better extraction solvent for both leaves and flowers. Highest levels were obtained from leaves. The highest antioxidant activity was recorded for leaves extract with 100% methanol. These values indicated a weak antioxidant activity compared to antioxidant standards. A correlation was established between the phenolic and flavonoids contents and the antioxidant activity of the crude extracts. A moderate to great antibacterial activity was observed against Gram+ bacteria. Any antibacterial activity was detected against fungi strains and Gram- bacteria.

In conditions in which using plants with protection properties has almost become a "fashion" of modern society, we believe that scientific research is necessary to confirm the existence of these useful substances for health in this plants. With modern methods of scientific research were identified substances with brawl antioxidant activity in juice of Hippophae rhamnoides, Ribes nigrum and Vaccinium myrtillus. The results confirm the existence of compounds with antioxidant activity in plant products analyzed, and beneficial effects on human health that consumption of vegetable produce. However, should be avoided the approach where plants are a universal "panacea".

Nyctanthes arbour-tristis is a shrub belongs to the family Oleaceae. The flowers of this plant are fragrant since the presence of flavonol glycosides. It has also been reported for the presence of β-sitosterol, iridoid glycosides, tannins etc., and known to have immunostimulant, hepatoprotective, antiviral and antifungal activities. In the present study an attempt is made to identify antioxidant capacity and anthelminthic potential of methanolic flower extract of Nyctanthes arbour-tristis. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by total phenolic content assay, total flavonoids content assay, free radical scavenging activity and reducing ability methods. Anthelmintic activity was evaluated on Perithima posthuma using Piperazine citrate as standard drug. The results obtained for the above activities reveals that Nyctanthes arbour-tristis shows considerable antioxidant activity for all the methods and anthelminthic potential at 300 mg/ml.
