Research indicates that high sugar intake in early childhood may increase risks of tooth decay, obesity and chronic disease later in life. In this sugar fact study, we explored whether an online intervention which focused on comprehensive and useful information about nutrition labels impacted mother’s choice of low sugar food. The intervention was developed on the basis of the theory of planned behavior. In total, 122 mothers were recruited. Mothers were divided into an online-only group and a plus group. Knowledge of sugar and nutrition labels, behavioral attitudes, perceived behavioral control, behavioral intentions and behavior towards purchasing low-sugar products with nutrition labels were collected. After the intervention, both groups exhibited significantly enhanced sugar and nutrition label knowledge, perceived behavioral control, behavioral intentions and behavior. Compared to the online-only group, knowledge, perceived behavioral control and behavior of the plus group significantly improved. After the intervention, about 40% of the plus group and 80% of the online-only group still did not know the World Health Organization (WHO) sugar recommendations. Understanding sugar recommendations and using nutrition labels are crucial to help people control calorie and sugar intake. Further research with a larger sample is warranted to evaluate the effects of the intervention on long-term changes in shopping behavior. More efficient and convenient nutrition education is required to increase public awareness of sugar recommendations and help people control calorie and sugar intake.

Abstract Background Teaching engineering at a high school level has been a subject of substantial concern during recent curriculum reforms. Many countries are increasingly including engineering-focused subjects in their technology curriculum guidelines. However, technology teachers face challenges regarding the optimal implementation of an engineering-focused curriculum. It is essential to understand technology teachers’ perceptions of and behavior in classroom practices when teaching an engineering-focused curriculum. To explore the factors influencing the effective implementation of the curriculum, this study aimed to explore the association between technology teachers’ perceptions regarding curriculum guidelines (i.e., perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and beliefs) and their behavioral intentions. In addition, this study explored how these perceptions change for teachers who participated in a professional development program (PDP) for teaching an engineering-focused curriculum compared with those who did not participate in the program (NoPDP). Results In this study, structural equation modeling was used to investigate factors potentially influencing teachers’ behavioral intentions, including subjective norms and perceived behavioral control. The results showed that technology teachers’ behavioral intentions were influenced by their perceptions of the curriculum's usefulness. Subjective norms and perceived behavioral control were also significant determinants of behavioral intentions. Moreover, the results differed between the two groups. Perceived usefulness had direct and indirect effects on the behavioral intentions of the PDP and NoPDP groups, respectively. Conclusions We constructed a model of technology teachers’ behavioral intentions to implement an engineering-focused curriculum and identified factors influencing technology teachers’ behavioral intentions to implement an engineering-focused curriculum. Our conclusions are as follows: (1) the model was adequate for determining the factors influencing technology teachers’ behavioral intentions; (2) in the PDP group, perceived usefulness, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control were significantly associated with behavioral intentions; and (3) in the NoPDP group, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use were associated with behavioral intentions and self-reported behavior only via the mediating factor of beliefs. The above influencing factors should be taken into account when planning professional development programs for pre- and in-service teachers, as these programs will have implications regarding the successful implementation of an engineering-focused curriculum.

Graduate students have become the driving force of scientific research at Chinese universities. Therefore, further work is needed to understand what influences postgraduate students' academic integrity. Using the theory of planned behavior, this study investigated the relationships between postgraduates' attitude toward academic integrity, social norms (subjective, descriptive, and moral), perceived behavioral control, and intentions, and examined the moderating role of social identity in the relationship between social norms and intentions. We conducted a survey with 1,256 Chinese biomedical postgraduate students, and analyzed the data with structural equation modeling. The results show that attitude, subjective norms, descriptive norms, and perceived behavioral control influenced students' academic integrity-related behavioral intentions. The model explained over half of the variance in intentions, indicating that attitude, subjective norms, descriptive norms, and perceived behavioral control were the main variables influencing academic integrity-related behaviors. The theory of planned behavior can be applied in research on postgraduates' academic integrity.

The way consumers think about the products they will buy determines their buying behavior. The decision to buy a particular product is obviously in accordance with the buyer’s attitude. The buyers will also feel more comfortable if their behavior meets with the approval and expectations of the people close to them. While the development of a certain attitude has no effect on subjective judgment, the effect of compromise is likely to make a contribution to its development. Since it is still unclear, this study’s main purposed is to clarify this. In addition, while an attitude is theorized as being a predictor of behavior, through behavioral intention, the study’s secondary purpose is to boost the earlier findings. Likewise, in accordance with the theory of planned behavior, the study will also examine the other predictors of behavioral intention, in relation to the behavioral intention itself. A sample consisting of a 100 respondents was compiled by using the convenience and judgment technique. The data were analyzed using Amos 16.0 and SPSS 16.0. As expected, the compromise effect had a significant influence on whether the customers’ attitude or the subjective norm was the main determinant. Likewise, the customers’ attitude, the subjective norm and perceived behavioral control were confirmed as good predictors of customers’ behavioral intentions.

Purpose Using the theory of planned behavior as its basis, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationships among beliefs about electronic service quality (E-S-QUAL); consumers’ need for uniqueness (CNFU); and beliefs about perceived behavioral control, expectations of important others, and cross-border online purchasing behavioral intention. The effects of E-S-QUAL and CNFU on attitude are examined with data collected from Korean consumers who have cross-border online purchasing experience. Design/methodology/approach The authors evaluate the research model in this study and test the hypotheses using partial least squares, an OLS regression-based estimation method that focuses on predicting independent variables hypothesized to have a causal relationship that maximizes the explanatory variance of the dependent variable. Findings Analysis of the data emphasizes that beliefs about E-S-QUAL and CNFU positively affect attitudes toward buying online from international sites, which in turn positively affect purchasing intention. Also, beliefs about self-efficacy and normative structure regarding cross-border online purchasing positively affect behavioral intentions. Originality/value This paper develops a conceptual model explaining consumers’ intentions to shop online across national borders. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, none of the previous studies have particularly mentioned the associations between beliefs about e-service quality and actual behavioral intentions in the context of cross-border online shopping. Also, the important role of CNFU has been ignored as one of the factors that can affect consumers’ decisions to shop online beyond national borders. In regard to this matter, the authors aim to investigate cross-border online shopping factors that can help international e-commerce gain a better understanding of the needs of their consumers.

Dating violence prevention programs have been understudied in Asia, including China. The current study sought to evaluate the feasibility of the Dating Compassion, Assessment, reFerral, and Education (CAFE) Ambassador Programme in China. This program is designed to enhance the behavioral intentions of Chinese students to help peers who are experiencing dating violence and to compare students’ attitudes toward dating violence, students’ subjective norms about helping peers, and students’ perceived behavioral control in helping peers before and after attending the 7.5 hour program. A quasi-experimental design was used, including two student groups ( n = 85) assessed at baseline and 3-month follow-up. Quantitative pre- and postintervention measurements, in conjunction with qualitative focus group interviews, were used to evaluate the program’s effectiveness. The findings indicated a significant enhancement in the behavioral intentions of participants in the intervention group to help peers experiencing dating violence, a stronger subjective norm regarding helping others, and an enhanced sense of perceived behavioral control to help, compared with the control group, over time. Focus group data revealed that students who participated in the program developed a more comprehensive definition of dating violence, increased awareness of dating violence in peers, a shift in their focus concerning the role of intention in dating violence and felt more responsible for helping their peers. The findings support the effectiveness of the Dating CAFE Ambassador Programme.

Abstract Introduction The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences coordinates a 2-week Summer Operational Experience (SOE) during the first year of medical school. The SOE aims to provide students with operational context and enhance familiarity with service-specific operational environments, the services’ medical department capabilities, and/or general warfighter skills. One overarching goal of the SOE is to provide an experience that may motivate students to pursue an operational medicine assignment at some point in their military career. However, to date, little evaluation data have been collected regarding the effectiveness of the SOE in encouraging medical students to pursue operational medicine assignments. The purpose of this project was to develop and collect initial validity evidence for a survey instrument designed to assess various aspects of students’ attitudes and behavioral intentions to pursue an operational medicine assignment at some point in their military career. Materials and Methods Using the theory of planned behavior as a framework, we developed a survey that focused on three distinct constructs: attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. We followed a systematic, seven-step design process to develop the survey and collect initial validity evidence. Students completed the 20-item survey prior to their operational experience to evaluate their intentions to pursue an operational medicine assignment at some point in their military career. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and reliability analysis were performed to examine the internal structure of the instrument. In addition, bivariate correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were used to explore the relationships between the identified factors and students’ intentions to pursue operational medicine. Results Results from the expert reviews and cognitive interviews suggested the instrument was clear and interpretable. We then invited the entire class of 2020 who participated in the SOE (149 students) to take the survey; in total, 122 students (response rate = 82%) completed the entire survey. Findings from the EFA suggested four underlying factors with satisfactory internal consistency reliability, and the regression analysis revealed that three factors statistically significantly predicted students’ intentions to pursue operational medicine: Attitude: Personal Growth (b = 0.67, β = 0.42, P < 0.001); Behavioral Control (b = 0.20, β = 0.15, P < 0.05); and Attitude: Career Progression (b = 0.36, β = 0.30, P < 0.001). The factor related to student’s perception of the importance that others placed on an operational medicine assignment was not a statistically significant predictor of intention. Conclusions Findings from this study suggest the developed survey yields scores that can reliably assess students’ attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and intentions to pursue operational medicine. Using this survey, course leaders have a tool for evaluating the success of the SOE and identifying potential areas for improvement within the curriculum. More broadly, other educators can use the theoretical framework and instrument design process described here to evaluate students’ behavioral intentions in their own contexts.

Abstract Background Having an unhealthy diet is a risk-factor in the development of non-communicable diseases. Through the provision of sufficient nutrition information, nutrition labeling is one of the recommendations to increase awareness and promote healthy diets. However, there is still limited research in the Philippines that can be utilized in improving nutrition label use. With the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as the study model, this study aimed to determine attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control on nutrition label, and if the three constructs are associated with the intention of nutrition label use among adults in selected communities. Methods This analytic cross-sectional study conducted face-to-face interview using a developed questionnaire, among 440 adults (18 to 59 years old) in the top four communities with highest population in Los Baňos, Laguna, selected through a two-stage sampling design. Data were encoded using MS Excel and analyzed using STATA. Results The prevalence of positive attitude was 89.32% (95% CI: 86.06 - 91.89) and 96.82% (95% CI: 94.69 - 98.11) had high degree of subjective norms. With regards to perceived behavioral control, 61.36% (95% CI: 56.71 - 65.82) found nutrition labels as easy to understand, and 94.09% (95% CI: 91.45 - 95.95) had high intention of using it. Then, using multiple logistic regression, only having a perceived behavioral control on nutrition label of being easy to understand (OR 3.33; 95% CI: 1.47-7.54) was found to be associated with having high intention of nutrition label use. Conclusions Information and education on nutrition labels should be strengthened to improve the perceived understanding of the participants which showed significant association with having high intention of nutrition label use. Nonetheless, promotions are important to maintain positive attitude and subjective norms toward nutrition label use. The study also generated data that can serve as reference for future studies. Key messages Among the three constructs of TPB, only having perceived behavioral control on nutrition label of being easy to understand was found to be associated with having high intention of nutrition label use. Improving the nutrition label understanding of the study participants is significant in having high intention of nutrition label use.

Two studies were conducted to predict physical activity in school-aged children. Study 1 tested the utility of an integrated model in predicting physical activity (PA) intention and behavior—the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and self-efficacy theory. Six hundred and forty-five New Zealand children (aged 11–13 years) completed measures corresponding to the integrated model and a self-reported measure of PA one week later. Perceived behavioral control (PBC) and subjective norm were the two strongest predictors of intentions. Task efficacy and barrier efficacy were the two strongest predictors of PA. A second study (Study 2) was conducted to determine whether the self-efficacy measures could discriminate objectively measured PA levels. Sixty-seven Canadian children (aged 11–13 years) completed task and barrier self-efficacy measures. The following week, children classified as ‘high’ (n = 11) and ‘lower’ (n = 7) for both task and barrier efficacy wore an Actical® monitor for seven consecutive days to provide activity-related energy expenditure (AEE) data. Results showed that children with high efficacy expended significantly greater AEE than their lower efficacious counterparts. Findings from these two studies provide support for the use of self-efficacy interventions as a potentially useful means of increasing PA levels among school-aged children.

To better understand seniors’ intentions in visiting casinos, this study proposed an extension of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) with casino gaming motivation. The results of this study suggest that among motivations for seniors to visit casinos, winning and enjoyment directly and positively affected behavioral intentions, and all predictable variables of TPB positively affected seniors’ casino visiting intentions. Contrary to our expectations, past casino visits did not have a moderating effect on the relationships between the major TPB variables (attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control) casino motivation and behavioral intentions. The overall study results suggest that the proposed extended model is a useful tool for explaining seniors’ casino visiting intentions. Some theoretical and practical implications for casino operations are also discussed.

Adapting the theory of planned behavior to the area of financial choices in family firms, we argue that these choices in family firms are largely affected by family norms, attitude, perceived behavioral control, and behavioral intentions. A time-lagged sample, estimated via structural equation modeling of 118 German family firms, supports a behavioral approach to the study of financing decisions. Specifically, we show that family norms and attitude toward external debt and external equity affect behavioral intention to use the respective financing choices, which in turn affects financing behavior. Perceived behavioral control, however, was shown to negatively affect behavioral intentions to use external equity and was positively related to the use of internal funds. Implications of these capital structure decisions and ideas for future research are discussed.
