The pathophysiological role of intracellular bacteria in osteomyelitis is still a matter of debate. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the presence of Staphylococcus aureus internalized into osteoblasts in human tissue samples of a case with a chronic osteomyelitis using ultrastructural transmission electron microscope analysis.

A citric acid anionic surfactant has been applied for nano manganese ferrite (MnFeO3) fabrication using sol gel method. The calcinations have been varied for 300, 600 and 800oC. The UVDR (UV-Vis Diffused Reflectance) analysis shows a high absorptive band gap after 400 nm for the 600oC calcinated MnFeO3. The DTA (Differential Thermal Analysis) profiles exhibit remarkably trapped volatile matters (H2O, CO2, and NO2) in the fabricated MnFeO3 under sol gel heat treatment at 100oC and the peaks disappeared as the calcination increased to 600oC. As the temperature elevated from 100 to 300oC, the absorption peaks of volatile components are disappeared as demonstrated clearly by the FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) spectra of the fabricated material, which 3393 cm-1 corresponded to OH group, 1624 cm-1 to CO group, and 1384 cm-1 to NO group. The XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) spectra show clearly the alteration process from amorphous to crystalline structure as the calcinations increased from 300 to 600oC. In addition, the TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope) analysis exhibits parts of the fabricated MnFeO3 found in cubic nano size of 15-40 nm under interested calcinations and the result is in agreement with that obtained by XRD investigation.

Abstract The presence of nanoparticles on the body of the honeybee Apis dorsata Fabricius, was investigated for the first time to better understand the bee’s behaviour. These have been observed by using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and confirmed by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Our study clearly denotes that the Indian rock honey bee Apis dorsata possess calcium silicate and calcium phosphate nanoparticles on its body surface of 5-50 nm in diameter. In particular, the nanoparticles on the abdomen and thorax of A. dorsata have an average diameter of about 10 nanometers and they are smaller than those found on wings of the same bees which are about 20 nanometers. The nanoparticles found are different of the ones previously observed on honey bees or other insects. The origin and role of these natural nanoparticles on the body of the Indian rock bee need to be to be further investigated; more research in the subject might raise important aspects in relation to the conservation of these unique pollinators.

MicroRNA-24 (miR-24) may be involved in neoplastic process; however, the role of this microRNA in the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) related to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) has not been well elaborated. Here, we tested miR-24 expression in 207 pathology-diagnosed HCC cases from high AFB1 exposure areas and HCC cells. We found that miR-24 was upregulated in HCC tumor tissues relative to adjacent noncancerous tissue samples, and that the high expression of miR-24 was significantly correlated with larger tumor size, higher microvessel density, and tumor dedifferentiation. Additionally, this microRNA overexpression modified the recurrence-free survival (relative hazard ratio [HR], 4.75; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.66–8.47) and overall survival (HR=3.58, 95% CI = 2.34–5.46) of HCC patients. Furthermore, we observed some evidence of joint effects between miR-24 and AFB1 exposure on HCC prognosis. Functionally, miR-24 overexpression progressed tumor cells proliferation, inhibited cell apoptosis, and developed the formation of AFB1-DNA adducts. These results indicate for the first time that miR-24 may modify AFB1-related HCC prognosis and tumorigenesis.

In the presented work, for the first time, the metal-modified defective titanium(IV) oxide nanoparticles with well-defined titanium vacancies, was successfully obtained. Introducing platinum and copper nanoparticles (NPs) as surface modifiers of defective d-TiO2 significantly increased the photocatalytic activity in both UV-Vis and Vis light ranges. Moreover, metal NPs deposition on the magnetic core allowed for the effective separation and reuse of the nanometer-sized photocatalyst from the suspension after the treatment process. The obtained Fe3O4@SiO2/d-TiO2-Pt/Cu photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and specific surface area (BET) measurements, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DR-UV/Vis), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Further, the mechanism of phenol degradation and the role of four oxidative species (h+, e−, •OH, and •O2−) in the studied photocatalytic process were investigated.

As SiC power devices are being developed toward ultrahigh-voltage bipolar structures, the density of basal plane dislocations in SiC epilayers has to be minimized. In this work, a special category of basal plane dislocations, i.e. interfacial dislocations, was investigated. Their etch pits were detected at the interface and the microstructure was revealed by cross-section transmission electron microscope analysis.
