Flavonoids play a key role as a secondary antioxidant defense system against different biotic and abiotic stresses, and also act as coloring compounds in various fruiting plants. In this study, fruit samples of purple (Passiflora edulis f. edulis) and yellow (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa) passion fruit were collected at five developmental stages (i.e., fruitlet, green, veraison, maturation, and ripening stage) from an orchard located at Nanping, Fujian, China. The contents of flavonoid, anthocyanin, proanthocyanin, and their metabolites were determined using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS), activities of key enzymes involved in flavonoid metabolism were measured, and expression profiling of related genes was done using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The results revealed that total flavonoids, anthocyanins, and procyanidins were found to be increased in the fruit peel of both cultivars with fruit maturity. Total flavonoids, anthocyanins, procyanidins, flavonoid metabolites (i.e., rutin, luteolin, and quercetin), and anthocyanin metabolites (i.e., cyanidin-3-O-glucoside chloride, peonidin-3-O-glucoside, and pelargonidin-3-O-glucoside) were found abundant in the peel of purple passion fruit, as compared to yellow passion fruit. Principle component analysis showed that the enzymes, i.e., C4H, 4CL, UFGT, and GST were maybe involved in the regulation of flavonoids metabolism in the peel of passion fruit cultivars. Meanwhile, PePAL4, Pe4CL2,3, PeCHS2, and PeGST7 may play an important role in flavonoid metabolism in fruit peel of the passion fruit. This study provides new insights for future elucidation of key mechanisms regulating flavonoids biosynthesis in passion fruit.

O alagamento no solo é um fenômeno que reduz a sobrevivência, o crescimento e o desenvolvimento de plantas, podendo ocasionar queda na produtividade quando essas são agricultáveis. O maracujazeiro (Passiflora edulis Sims) é uma frutífera comercial com propriedades medicinais cuja produção incentiva a irrigação; e não são encontrados estudos que apresentem efeitos do excesso de água no solo sobre estas plantas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar alterações morfoanatômicas e fisiológicas no desenvolvimento inicial de plântulas de maracujazeiro expostas a diferentes níveis de água no solo. As plântulas foram organizadas em três tratamentos: solo com capacidade de campo, pré-submergido e alagado. Após sete dias, foram feitas análises de trocas gasosas, potencial hídrico, quantificação de prolina e cortes anatômicos de raízes. O solo alagado influencia as trocas gasosas e afeta negativamente a fotossíntese. Não houve alterações no potencial hídrico nem na quantificação de prolina entre os tratamentos. Os tratamentos pré-submergido e alagado apresentaram aerênquima e aumento no diâmetro das raízes e na espessura das barreiras apoplásticas e do córtex. O maracujazeiro apresentou alterações fisiológicas e anatômicas que permitiram sua sobrevivência em condições pré-submergidas e alagadas, o que significa que plântulas jovens dessa espécie suportam maiores quantidades de água no solo.

ABSTRACT Purple passion fruit (Passiflora edulis f. edulis Sims, known in Colombia as “gulupa”) is an increasingly important crop in Colombia, as seen by an increase in the area under cultivation. This recent prominence coincides with a low number of existing technologies related to the cultivation of the fruit, resulting in a lack of knowledge about its associated pathogens and the absence of rapid and precise diagnostic tests. The objective of this study was to determine the pathogenicity of distinct microorganisms isolated from purple passion fruit samples, some of which had not been previously reported in Colombia. The sampling was performed in seven plots located in two regions of the Colombian Antioquia. With the use of field symptomatology, the isolation of microorganisms, morphological characteristics, molecular analysis, and pathogenicity tests, the pathogen species Phytophthora nicotianae var. parasitica, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides sensu lato, and Phytophthora drechsleri were identified for the first time in Colombia. These pathogens cause lesions in fruits, with an incidence of 10.9, 7.6, and 2.8%, respectively. This is also the first report on a global level of Phytophthora drechsleri causing a disease in this plant species.

North Sumatera is one of the central areas of purple passion fruit production in Indonesia. Processing passion fruit into beverage products (passion fruit juice) produces peel  has not been utilized. The use of passion fruit skin needs to be studied so that it can be useful as a raw material for antibacterial drug preparations. The aim of this study was to determine the phytochemical constituent screening  and antibacterial activity of ethyl acetate fraction of purple passion fruit peel against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Simplicia and ethyl acetate fraction were determinated  its phytochemical properties.  The extraction process by percolation method using ethanol  96% and continue to fractionation process by liquid liquid extraction method using n-hexane and ethyl acetate. The antibacterial activity were tested  against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli using agar diffusion method with paper discs. The result showed  that  the simplicia characteristic of passion fruit peel  were water content of  8.64%, water soluble extract of  31.69%, ethanol soluble extract of 13.02%, ash total of 7.89%, and insoluble ash in acid of 0.816%. The phytochemical screening simplicia and ethyl acetate fraction showed the presence of flavonoids, glycosides, saponins and tannins. The antibacterial activity test showed that the ethyl acetate fraction has an effective inhibition at the concentration of 100 mg/ml against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, it showed dose dependent manner. The ethyl acetate fraction of passion fruit peel (Passiflora edulis Sims) has an antibacterial activity  on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli
