The interfacial effect is one of the significant factors in the glass-transition temperature (Tg) of the polymeric thin film system, competing against the free surface effect. Herein, the Tgs of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films with different thicknesses and substrates are studied by fluorescence measurements, focusing on the influence of interfacial effects on the Tgs. The strong interaction between PMMA and quartz substrate leads to increased Tgs with the decreased thickness of the film. The plasmonic silver substrate causes enhanced fluorescence intensity near the interface, resulting in the delayed reduction of the Tgs with the increasing film thickness. Moreover, as a proof of the interface-dependent Tgs, hydrogen bonds of PMMA/quartz and molecules orientation of PMMA/silver are explored by the Raman spectroscopy, and the interfacial interaction energy is calculated by the molecular dynamics simulation. In this study, we probe the inter-relationship between the interfacial interactions arising from the different substrates and the Tg behavior of polymer thin films.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on three single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) reinforced epoxy resin composites were conducted to study the influence of SWCNT type on the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the composites. The composite matrix is cross-linked epoxy resin based on the epoxy monomers bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) cured by diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM). MD simulations of NPT (constant number of particles, constant pressure and constant temperature) dynamics were carried out to obtain density as a function of temperature for each composite system. The Tg was determined as the temperature corresponding to the discontinuity of plot slopes of the densityvsthe temperature. In order to understand the motion of polymer chain segments above and below the Tg, various energy components and the MSD at various temperatures of the composites were investigated and their roles played in the glass transition process were analyzed. The results show that the Tg of the composites increases with increasing aspect ratio of the embedded SWCNT

AbstractGlass transition temperature of polyetherimide (PEI) thin films and nanoporous PEI samples was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry. In both of these systems, the glass transition temperature decreased with respect to the bulk value. In the nanoporous system, scanning electron microscope images were used to characterize pore size distribution, and Monte Carlo simulations were performed to calculate the nearest neighbor pore-to-pore distances. Pore-to-pore distances and thin film thickness values were used to establish a quantitative analogy between thin films and nanoporous system.

Permittivity of about 1 µm thin films prepared from polymethylmetactrylate (PMMA) solution doped with 20 % of diphenyl sulfoxide was studied. Permittivity of the films was measured as a function of the temperature. The measurement of the dependence of polarization on electrical field was performed using a standard Sawyer-Tower circuit. The presence of the dopant increases the composite permittivity namely above the PMMA glass transition temperature. Hysteresis loops observed on the measured polarization vs. electrical field dependence indicate easier and more pronounced polarizability of the composite comparing to pristine PMMA.
