In this study, two different fillers were prepared from carbon-based ashes, produced from the wooden biomass of a pyro-gasification plant, and starting from lignocellulosic waste. The first type was obtained by dry ball-milling (DBA), while the second one was prepared by oxidation in H2O2 of the dry ball-milled ashes (oDBA). The characterization of the fillers included wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD), thermogravimetric, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The DBA and oDBA fillers were then tested as possible catalysts for the crosslinking reaction of a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) with a diamine. The cure reaction was studied by means of rheometry and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The oDBA filler exhibits both a higher catalytic activity on the epoxide–amine reaction than the DBA sample and improved mechanical properties and glass transition temperature. The results obtained indicate, hence, the potential improvement brought by the addition of carbon-based waste ashes, which allow both increasing the flexural properties and the glass transition temperature of the epoxy resin and reducing the curing time, acting as a catalyst for the crosslinking reaction of the epoxy resin.

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on three single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) reinforced epoxy resin composites were conducted to study the influence of SWCNT type on the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the composites. The composite matrix is cross-linked epoxy resin based on the epoxy monomers bisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA) cured by diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM). MD simulations of NPT (constant number of particles, constant pressure and constant temperature) dynamics were carried out to obtain density as a function of temperature for each composite system. The Tg was determined as the temperature corresponding to the discontinuity of plot slopes of the densityvsthe temperature. In order to understand the motion of polymer chain segments above and below the Tg, various energy components and the MSD at various temperatures of the composites were investigated and their roles played in the glass transition process were analyzed. The results show that the Tg of the composites increases with increasing aspect ratio of the embedded SWCNT

The method of optical wedge revealed that the optimum temperature for compatibility of hexakis(4-acetamidophenoxy)cyclotriphosphazene (ACP) and DER-331 epoxy resin is in the range of 220–260 °C. The interdiffusion time of components at these temperatures is about 30 min. The TGA and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) methods revealed the curing temperature of 280 °С for this composition. IR spectroscopy confirmed that the reaction between the resin and ACP is completed within 10 min. According to the DSC data, a glass transition temperature of 130 °С was estimated for the cured resin. Combustion test UL-94 demonstrated that the obtained material can be assigned to the fireproof category of V-0. Burning droplets were not formed during the burning. The coke formed during the combustion of samples possessed a dense and porous structure. The shape of pores is closed, while their size is in the range of 0.2–200 µm.

Studies were carried out on the toughening of a bifunctional epoxy (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A) matrix system with an ABS/PC thermoplastic blend. The thermoplastic blend was incorporated into the epoxy matrix by particle dispersion and melt-mix methods. The unmodified and modified epoxy resin systems were cured with a stoichiometric quantity of diamino diphenyl methane (DDM). The cured castings were characterized by measurement of glass transition temperature (Tg) by DsC, evaluation of plane strain fracture toughness (Klc) by three-point bending tests and SEM analysis of non-etched and base/acid etched fracture surfaces. In genera] ABS/PC-modified (15% w/w) epoxy-resin-cured systems showed enhanced fracture toughness without lowering the glass transition temperature. The melt-mix method yielded higher fracture toughness than the particle dispersion method; this conclusion was also supported by scanning electron micrographs.

The tensile fracture mechanics and thermo-mechanical properties of mixtures composed of two kinds of epoxy resins of different chemical structures and functional groups were studied. The base resin was a bi-functional epoxy resin based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) and the other resins were (a) distilled triglycidylether of meta-amino phenol (b) 1, 6–naphthalene di epoxy and (c) fluorene di epoxy. This research shows that a small number of multifunctional epoxy systems, both di- and tri-functional, can significantly increase tensile strength (14%) over neat DGEBA while having no negative impact on other mechanical properties including glass transition temperature and elastic modulus. In fact, when compared to unmodified DGEBA, the tri-functional epoxy shows a slight increase (5%) in glass transition temperature at 10 wt.% concentration. The enhanced crosslinking of DGEBA (90 wt.%)/distilled triglycidylether of meta-amino phenol (10 wt.%) blends may be the possible reason for the improved glass transition. Finally, the influence of strain rate, temperature and moisture were investigated for both the neat DGEBA and the best performing modified system. The neat DGEBA was steadily outperformed by its modified counterpart in every condition.

AbstractWe present an overview for the basic fundamental of thermal analysis, which is applicable for educational purposes, especially for lecturers at the universities, who may refer to the articles as the references to “teach” or to “lecture” to final year project students or young researchers who are working on their postgraduate projects. Description of basic instrumentation [i.e. differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TGA)] covers from what we should know about the instrument, calibration, baseline and samples’ signal. We also provide the step-by-step guides for the estimation of the glass transition temperature after DSC as well as examples and exercises are included, which are applicable for teaching activities. Glass transition temperature is an important property for commercial application of a polymeric material, e.g. packaging, automotive, etc. TGA is also highlighted where the analysis gives important thermal degradation information of a material to avoid sample decomposition during the DSC measurement. The step-by-step guides of the estimation of the activation energy after TGA based on Hoffman’s Arrhenius-like relationship are also provided.

The present work aims to provide insights on recent findings indicating the presence of multiple equilibration mechanisms in physical aging of glasses. To this aim, we have investigated a glass forming polyether, poly(1-4 cyclohexane di-methanol) (PCDM), by following the evolution of the enthalpic state during physical aging by fast scanning calorimetry (FSC). The main results of our study indicate that physical aging persists at temperatures way below the glass transition temperature and, in a narrow temperature range, is characterized by a two steps evolution of the enthalpic state. Altogether, our results indicate that the simple old-standing view of physical aging as triggered by the α relaxation does not hold true when aging is carried out deep in the glassy state.

Experimental results on tensile mechanics properties of GFRP bars at high temperatures are present in this paper. Thirty commercially produced GFRP tensile specimens of 8mm diameter were tested at high temperature ranging from 10°Cup to 500°C. Tensile test result indicates that, the ultimate tensile stress has significant reduction at two temperature zones, one is glass transition temperature of epoxy resin (80-120°C), with strength degradation 22%, the second is the soften temperature of glass fibers(about 400°C), the strength decrease drastically with almost linear rate and remained 33% residual strength at 500°C. The elastic modulus remained unchanged until glass transition temperature of epoxy resin, and the modulus declined linearly with the temperature elevating. Stress-strain relationships of GFRP bars exhibit liner performance even at high temperatures.
