This research proposes an inverted L-shaped patch antenna with a corner-truncated partial ground plane diagonally adjoined to a square branch for L-band applications. The adjoining square branch was used to perturb linear polarization for circular polarization, and the corner-truncated partial ground plane was utilized to enhance the axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW). Simulations were performed, an antenna prototype was fabricated, and experiments were carried out. The simulation and measured results were in good agreement. The proposed antenna could achieve an ARBW of 77.87% (1.09–2.48 GHz). The novelty of this research lies in the concurrent use of a square branch and a corner-truncated partial ground plane to realize wide ARBW in an L-band, rendering the technology suitable for satellite communication and navigation applications.

Satellites are very prominent for current and future communication applications like broadcasting, 5G and Military Communications. Most of the Satellites are used for radio communication. For communicating purpose, the satellite antenna must have unique characteristics such as circular polarization, broad beam width and good axial ratio. In order to have such type of unique characteristics, the micro strip patch antenna is the suitable antenna for Satellite applications because of its advantages. In this paper, a Wide band DGS circularly polarized micro strip patch antenna has been proposed for C-Band Satellite Communication Applications. Two defects or slots are introduced in the ground plane and those are orthogonally overlapped to get the circular polarization characteristics. In addition to this, these two slots enhance the bandwidth of the patch antenna by tuned to different frequencies. Moreover, the patch with defective ground structure is simulated and fabricated. Also measurements are carried out and obtained results are compared with the simulated results. It is noted that all the simulated and measured radiation patterns of the antenna have been carried out for all the frequencies and data has been compiled. However, some of the simulated and measured radiation patterns are included in this paper due to space constraint.

In this communication, a circular patch antenna is reported for dual- band operation based on VIAs. Initially the patch is resonating at single band with Linear Polarization (LP), and the Circular Polarization (CP) is obtained by inserting semi circular cuts at the edges of circular patch. The second band is achieved by loading the vertical metallic VIAs along the circumference of the patch antenna. The reported antenna is working at 2.4 GHz (Wi-Fi) and 3.5 GHz (5G) bands with Return Loss Band Width (RLBW) of 4.83% and 10.37% respectively. The Axial Ratio (AR) bandwidth at 5G band is 2.38% (3.31- 3.39 GHz)

A new single-feed aperture-coupled, X-band microstrip patch antenna array with circular polarization (CP) is designed. CP is achieved using indented microstrip patches fed through the slots on a substrate integrated waveguide. The antenna has the high radiation efficiency more than 90% over the operating frequency. Impedance bandwidth (VSWR < 2) and axial ratio bandwidth (AR < 3 dB) of 11.8, and 10.9% is attained, respectively. Good agreement is achieved between simulated and measured results.

A reconfigurable asymmetric patch antenna with arced corners loaded with a rectangular slot and a T slot on the partial ground used for UWB and Ku band applications. The discussion is carried out into three segments. In the first segment, the design of patch antenna proposed asymmetric arcs at the corner, two side slits, and one slot in the middle of the patch while a T-slot integrated on the partial ground plane. This presented antenna covers an impedance bandwidth ranging from 3.0 GHz to 16.2GHz with a fractional amount of 132%. It is found that a wide band of 3.0 GHz to 10.7 GHz is achieved by using a T-slot on the partial ground plane with a normal rectangular patch while 10.8 GHz to 16.2 GHz is attained by using two corners arcs with two small slits on the patch. The experimental result shows good agreement of 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth and radiation characteristics with the simulated result of the proposed antenna. The second segment proposes an extracted equivalent circuit model for patch and ground plane of corner arc monopole antenna using EM software package in the ADS platform and made a good agreement with the proposed antenna. Finally in the third segment RF PIN diode is embedded in a rectangular slot of the patch which achieves desired frequency shifting in the required band of operation.

In this paper, a single fed polarization reconfigurable antenna is proposed. The antenna consists of a radiating patch incorporated with a diagonal-shaped slot at its center. Four p-i-n diodes are used for polarization reconfiguration. The p-i-n diodes are placed in diagonal slot region. The proposed antenna is designed to operate in three states – linear polarization (LP), left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) and right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) by biasing corresponding p-i-n diodes. The antenna gives measured peak gain of 6.2 dBi for LP state and 5.82 dBic for both RHCP and LHCP states. It also achieves 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth of 5.95% for both RHCP and LHCP configurations. The antenna finds application in areas of modern wireless communication.

AbstractA broadband circularly polarized slotted square patch antenna with horizontal meandered strip (HMS) is presented and studied. The HMS feeding technique provides the good impedance matching and broadside symmetrical radiation patterns. A set of cross asymmetrical slots are etched on the radiating patch to realize the circular polarization. An electrically small stub is added on the edge of the antenna for further improvement in performance. Measured 10-dB impedance bandwidth (IBW) and 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) of the proposed antenna are 32.31 % (3.14–4.35 GHz) and 20.91 % (3.34–4.12 GHz), respectively. The gain of the antenna is varied from 3.5 to 4.86dBi within 3-dB ARBW. Measured results matched well with the simulated results.

This paper presents an original solution to design a compact dual circularly polarized isoflux antenna for nanosatellite applications. This kind of antenna has been previously designed in our laboratory, for a single circular polarization. This antenna is composed of a dual circularly polarized feed and a choke horn antenna. This feed is a cross-shaped slot in the ground plane, which provides coupling between a patch and a ring microstrip line with two ports. It is located at the center of a choke horn antenna. The simulated antenna presents an axial ratio <3 dB and a realized gain close to 0 dB over a 400 MHz bandwidth (8.0–8.4 GHz) at the limit of coverage, i.e. 65° whatever the azimuth angle (φ) and the port. A 20 dB matching for each port and 13 dB isolation characteristics between the two ports have been achieved on this bandwidth. It has been realized and successfully measured.

A low-profile dual-band circular polarized (CP) patch antenna with wide half-power beamwidths (HPBWs) is presented for CNSS applications. Simple stacked circular patches are used to achieve dual-band radiation. To enhance the HPBW for the two operation bands, a dual annular parasitic metal strip (D-APMS) combined with reduced ground plane (R-GP) is presented. A single-input feed network based on the coupled line transdirectional (CL-TRD) coupler is also proposed to provide two orthogonal modes at the two frequency bands simultaneously. Experimental results show that the 10 dB impedance bandwidth is 32.7%. The 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidths for the lower and upper bands are 4.1% and 6.5%, respectively. At 1.207 GHz, the antenna has the HPBW of 123° and 103° in the xoz and yoz planes, separately. And the values are 127° and 113° at 1.561 GHz.

Abstract Design of single-feed circularly polarized (CP) microstrip antenna is proposed in this article. The design employs the concept of E-shape patch with inclined fractal defected ground structure (IFDGS), which can improve the impedance bandwidth, gain, and axial ratio (AR) bandwidth. The excellent enhanced impedance bandwidth, axial ratio bandwidth, and gain are achieved by an inclined E-shaped fractal etched on the ground plane. The parameter studies of the E-shaped IFDGS are given to illustrate the way to obtain CP radiation. The third iterative IFDGS is fabricated on easily available FR4 substrate with a size of 0.494 λ0 × 0.494 λ0 × 0.019 λ0 (λ0 is the wavelength in free space at 3.624 GHz). The measured results verify the simulated results and show good agreement. The proposed antenna shows an impedance bandwidth of 12.7% at a centre frequency of 3.47 GHz and 3-dB AR bandwidth for this band is 2.39% at a centre frequency of 3.626 GHz. The measured peak gain for the proposed antenna is found as 8.1 dBi. The proposed antenna can be suitable for mobile WIMAX operation (IEEE 802.16e-2005 standard), wireless communication in CA-band and FCC.
