Many methods such as biomechanics and coaching have been proposed to help people learn a certain movement. There have been proposals for methods to discover characteristics of movement based on information obtained from videos and sensors. Especially in sports, it is expected that these methods can provide hints to improve movement skills. However, conventional methods focus on individual movements, and do not consider cases where external factors influence the movement, such as combat sports. In this paper, we propose a novel method called the Extraction for Successful Movement method (XSM method). Applying the method, this paper focuses on throwing techniques in judo to discover key factors that induce successful throwing from the postures right before initiating the throwing techniques. We define candidate factors by observing the video scenes where the throwing techniques are successfully performed. The method demonstrates the significance of the key factors according to the predominance of factors by χ2 test and residual analysis. Applying the XSM method to the dataset obtained from the videos of the Judo World Championships, we demonstrate the validity of the method with discussing the key factors related to the successful throwing techniques.

Abstract Surveillance and reconnaissance play a very important role in military and civil aspects. They are the key factors in military tactics and in the event of civilian calamities. In case of naval warfare, the submarines which are operating under deep water are required to carry out open land mass surveillance in an efficient manner without reaching to the water surface nor revealing their presence and position. This research paper proposes the conceptualized design to develop an autonomous unmanned octocopter system which is capable of being launched from an underwater platform such as submarines, with the help of a tethered launching mechanism known as octopod, to carry out surveillance, reconnaissance and payload delivery. In this paper, we present a novel method for development of UAV with special application on aerial survey from underwater platforms. A variety of design options which are investigated from various trade studies to evaluate the performance along with design configuration to satisfy the specific requirements are also presented in this paper.

Bovine bone is a considerable source for the production of hydroxyapatite. The recent study reported a novel method to extract hydroxyapatite from bovine bone without producing hazardous residue. The bovine bones were cut and boiled in the opened chamber followed by boiling in pressurized tank. The bones were then soaked into 95% ethanol. Calcination was then conducted in 800°C, 900°C and 1,000°C, for 2 hours. The result was then grinded and sieved. The powder then was characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) to measure the purity of hydroxyapatite. It is concluded that the hydroxyapatite derived from this process showed 100% purity, resulting 35.34 ± 0.39% w/w from the wet bone weight and 72.3% w/w from the dried weight. The present extraction method has been proven to yield high amount of pure hydroxyapatite as well as reducing the use of hazardous reagent.

ABSTRACTIn this paper, we present the first data from an alternative extraction method for atmospheric 14CO2 analysis, based on the direct trapping of whole air samples onto a molecular sieve zeolite (13X) trap, incorporated into a commercially available automated graphitization system. Results are presented for both inter-laboratory comparison samples and an in-house reference standard. The in-house reference was used to calculate the standard deviation of measurements (2.0‰). This newly developed method will facilitate faster sample processing and therefore lower cost per analysis, critical for scaling up such studies.

ABSTRACT Four extraction methods, including a novel one, were compared for their efficiencies in producing DNA from three contrasting agricultural soils. Molecular analyses (PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis [DGGE] and clone libraries) focusing on different microbial groups were used as assessment criteria. Per soil, the DNA yields differed between extraction methods. Clear effects of method on apparent richness and community structure were found. Actinobacterial diversity based on soil DNA produced by two divergent methods revealed that a hitherto-undescribed group was obtained by the novel method.

ABSTRACTAdhesion of thin films to solid substrates has been measured by various methods. In addition to the traditional and the conventional methods, a novel method has been proposed. The adhesion is expressed by various units depending on the measuring method. Obtained values by typical or well known methods such as scratch, peel and pull method are expressed in terms of N, N/m and N/m2, respectively. Relation among these quantities was discussed. The interface structure between the films and the substrates was investigated by TEM, ED, EDS, etc. and was related to the adhesion. Particular attention was paid to the ion bombardment effect of the substrate on the adhesion.

In order to solve the problems of coarse alignment on swaying base of SINS, a novel method based on attitude quaternion is proposed. A decomposition of the objective initial attitude quaternion is given firstly. The time-varying parts can be derived from the quaternion update, and the invariable part can be obtained by using the integration of gravity. The problem finally becomes the Wahba’s problem. By using the FORM algorithm, the calculating process is optimized and the method can be easily used in engineering application. The final simulation verifies that the method proposed has higher accuracy than conventional methods.

AbstractIn this study, I seek to elucidate the process by which the Japanese royal descent myth evolved into the form with which the modern world is familiar. I analyze and compare the forms of the myth found in the Nihongi and the Kojiki, and explicate their evolution through historical and textual analysis. By examining the interplay of the internal dynamics of the myth itself and the external factors that worked to shape it, I reconstruct the mythographical process, and suggest key factors that may have molded the myth. In particular, I argue that it was the introduction of Buddhism at the Yamato court that stimulated the establishment of an imperial cult at Ise and the reconfiguration of key mythic traditions. According to my analysis, the myth itself originated during the reign of king Keitai (early 6th century). In the original myth, the ancestor of the ruling house was not the sun-goddess Amaterasu, but rather the heavenly ruler Takami-musubi. In the mid-sixth century, a sun-goddess named Ō-hirume was introduced in an effort to combat the rising influence of Buddhism. The artificial figure of Amaterasu was introduced only during the reign of Temmu, late in the seventh century.
