With the development of technology, speed prediction has become an important part of intelligent vehicle control strategies. However, the time-varying and nonlinear nature of vehicle speed increases the complexity and difficulty of prediction. Therefore, a CNN-based neural network architecture with two channel input (DICNN) is proposed in this paper. With two inputs and four channels, DICNN can predict the speed changes in the next 5 s by extracting the temporal information of 10 vehicle signals and the driver’s intention. The prediction performances of DICNN are firstly examined. The best RMSE, MAE, ME and R2 are obtained compared with a Markov chain combined with Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation, a support vector machine (SVM) and a single input CNN (SICNN). Secondly, equivalent fuel consumption minimization strategies (ECMS) combining different vehicle speed prediction methods are constructed. After verification by simulation, the equivalent fuel consumption of the simulation increases by only 4.89% compared with dynamic-programming-based energy management strategy and decreased by 5.40% compared with the speed prediction method with low accuracy.

Vehicle speed prediction plays a critical role in energy management strategy (EMS). Based on the adaptive particle swarm optimization–least squares support vector machine (APSO-LSSVM) algorithm with BP neural network (BPNN), a novel closed-loop vehicle speed prediction system is proposed. The database of a vehicle internet platform was adopted to construct a speed prediction model based on the APSO-LSSVM algorithm. Furthermore, a BPNN is established according to the local high-precision nonlinear fitting relationship between the predicted value and error so as to correct the prediction value. Then, the results are returned to the APSO-LSSVM model for calculating the minimum fitness function, thus obtaining a closed-loop prediction system. Finally, equivalent fuel consumption minimization strategy (ECMS) based EMS was performed. According to the simulation results, the RMSE performance is 0.831 km/h within 5 s, which is over 20% higher than other performances. Additionally, the training time is 15 min within 5 s, which is advantageous over BPNN. Furthermore, fuel consumption increases by 6.95% compared with the dynamic-programming algorithm and decreased by 5.6%~10.9% compared with the low accuracy of speed prediction. Overall, the proposed method is crucial for optimizing EMS as it is not only effective in improving prediction accuracy but also capable of reducing training time.

Vehicle speed prediction can obtain the future driving status of a vehicle in advance, which helps to make better decisions for energy management strategies. We propose a novel deep learning neural network architecture for vehicle speed prediction, called VSNet, by combining convolutional neural network (CNN) and long-short term memory network (LSTM). VSNet adopts a fake image composed of 15 vehicle signals in the past 15 s as model input to predict the vehicle speed in the next 5 s. Different from the traditional series or parallel structure, VSNet is structured with CNN and LSTM in series and then in parallel with two other CNNs of different convolutional kernel sizes. The unique architecture allows for better fitting of highly nonlinear relationships. The prediction performance of VSNet is first examined. The prediction results show a RMSE range of 0.519–2.681 and a R2 range of 0.997–0.929 for the future 5 s. Finally, an energy management strategy combined with VSNet and model predictive control (MPC) is simulated. The equivalent fuel consumption of the simulation increases by only 4.74% compared with DP-based energy management strategy and decreased by 2.82% compared with the speed prediction method with low accuracy.

Energy control strategy is a key technology of hybrid electric vehicle, and its control effect directly affects the overall performance of the vehicle. The current control strategy has some shortcomings such as poor adaptability and poor real-time performance. Therefore, a transient energy control strategy based on terminal neural network is proposed. Firstly, based on the definition of instantaneous control strategy, the equivalent fuel consumption of power battery was calculated, and the objective function of the minimum instantaneous equivalent fuel consumption control strategy was established. Then, for solving the time-varying nonlinear equations used to control the torque output, a terminal recursive neural network calculation method using BARRIER functions is designed. The convergence characteristic is analyzed according to the activation function graph, and then the stability of the model is analyzed and the time efficiency of the error converging to zero is deduced. Using ADVISOR software, the hybrid power system model is simulated under two typical operating conditions. Simulation results show that the hybrid electric vehicle using the proposed instantaneous energy control strategy can not only ensure fuel economy but also shorten the control reaction time and effectively improve the real-time performance.

For a great influence on the fuel economy and exhaust, driving cycle recognition is becoming more and more widely used in hybrid electric vehicles. The purpose of this study is to develop a method to identify the type of driving cycle in real time with better accuracy and apply the driving cycle recognition to minimize the fuel consumption with dynamic equivalent fuel consumption minimization strategy. The support vector machine optimized by the particle swarm algorithm is created for building driving cycle recognition model. Furthermore,the influence of the two parameters of window width and window moving velocity on the accuracy is also analyzed in online application. A case study of driving cycle in a medium-sized city is introduced based on collecting four typical driving cycle data in real vehicle test. A series of characteristic parameters are defined and principal component analysis is used for data processing. Finally, the driving cycle recognition model is used for equivalent fuel consumption minimization strategy with a parallel hybrid electric vehicle. Simulation results show that the fuel economy can improve by 9.914% based on optimized support vector machine, and the fluctuations of battery state of charge are more stable so that system efficiency and batter life are substantially improved.

An appropriate energy management strategy is essential to enhance the performance of hybrid electric vehicles. A novel modified equivalent fuel-consumption minimization strategy (ECMS) is developed considering the engine operating point deviation from the optimum operating line. This paper focuses on an all-inclusive evaluation of this modified ECMS with other state-of-art energy management strategies concerning battery ageing, engine switching along with fuel economy and charge sustenance. The simulation-based results of a hybrid two-wheeler concept are analysed, which shows that the modified ECMS offers the highest benefit compared to rule-based controllers concerning fuel economy and reduction in engine switching events. However, the improvement in fuel economy using modified ECMS has significant negative potential effects on critical battery parameters influencing battery ageing. The results are analysed and found consistent for two different drive cycles and three different powertrain component configurations. The results show a significant reduction in fuel consumption of up to 21.18% and a reduction in engine switching events of up to 55% with modified ECMS when compared with rule-based strategies. However, there is a significant increase in battery temperature by 31% and battery throughput by 378%, which plays a major role in accelerating battery ageing. This paper emphasizes the need to consider battery-ageing parameters along with other control objectives for a robust assessment of energy management strategies. This study helps in laying down a foundation for future improvements in energy management development and it also aids in establishing a basis for comparing energy management controllers.

Abstract Facial emotion recognition (FER) is a topic that has gained interest over the years for its role in bridging the gap between Human and Machine interactions. This study explores the potential of real time FER modelling, to be integrated in a closed loop system, to help in treatment of children suffering from Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The aim of this study is to show the differences between implementing Traditional machine learning and Deep learning approaches for FER modelling. Two classification approaches were taken, the first approach was based on classic machine learning techniques using Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) for feature extraction, with a k-Nearest Neighbor and a Support Vector Machine model as classifiers. The second approach uses Transfer Learning based on the popular “Alex Net” Neural Network architecture. The performance of the approaches was based on the accuracy of randomly selected validation sets after training on random training sets of the Oulu-CASIA database. The data analyzed shows that traditional machine learning methods are as effective as deep neural net models and are a good compromise between accuracy, extracted features, computational speed and costs.
