The realization of regional sustainable development has been a popular research topic during the process of urbanization. To explore the coordination relationships between urban development and ecological security—taking Urumqi city, a representative arid city in Xinjiang, China, as a study area—this study has constructed a framework of spatial suitability evaluation based on the characteristics of a Mountain–Oasis–Desert System (MODS) in an arid area under the framework of major function oriented zoning (MFOZ). A spatial overlay analysis using Geographic Information System (GIS) with a 5 m × 5 m grid or towns and streets as the basic unit was applied to comprehensively evaluate spatial suitability. The results showed that the study area was zoned into a forbidden development zone (as patches set in towns and streets), an ecological protection zone (nine towns or streets), a moderate development zone (16 towns or streets), and a key development zone (82 towns or streets), accounting for 30.35%, 32.50%, 23.79%, and 13.36%, respectively. The zoning results provided a basis to pointedly put forward the development and protection strategies of each administrative unit; and the research framework can be applied to other arid areas for the decision-making related to the urban space layout and environmental management.

China-Pakistan economic corridor (CPEC), a critical part of the Belt and Road initiative (BRI), is subjected to rapid infrastructure development, which may lead to potential eco-environmental vulnerability. This study uses multi-source geo-information, and the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM)-based best–worst method (BWM) to quantify the baseline eco-environmental vulnerability of one key CPEC sector—the Punjab province. The Punjab province is an important connection between northern and southern CPEC routes in Pakistan. In this study, we have established an indicator system consisting of twenty-two influential factors in a geospatial database to conduct eco-environmental vulnerability analysis. The overall setup is supported by a geographic information system (GIS) to perform spatial analysis. The resulting map was categorized into five vulnerability levels: very low, low, medium, high, and very high. The results revealed that the overall eco-environmental health of the Punjab province is reasonably good as 4.64% and 59.45% area of the key sector lies in ‘very low’ and ‘low’ vulnerability categories; however, there also exist highly vulnerable areas, particularly in the proximity of CPEC projects. Although high vulnerability areas constitute a very small percentage, only 0.08% of the Punjab province, still, decision-makers need to be aware of those regions and make corresponding protection strategies. Our study demonstrated that the MCDM-BWM-based EVA model could be effectively used to quantify vulnerability in other areas of CPEC. The findings of the study emphasize that management policies should be aligned with research-based recommendations for ecological protection, natural resource utilization, and sustainable development in regions participating in Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

The Ziquejie Terrace is one of the earliest cultivated terraces in the world, so it has important theoretical and practical significance to study its water culture for the protection and development. By on-the-spot investigation, interview and literature review, this paper reduces the Ziquejie terraces water culture as follows: efficient use of water resource, consciousness of water resource protection and scientific and reasonable irrigation area planning and management. At present, there are many problems existing in the Ziquejie Terrace area, such as soil and water erosion, runoff reduction and the shortage of irrigation water, environmental disruption caused by tourism development, terraced collapse, water culture facing destruction and other issues. To solve these problems, the paper proposed to study the contradictions between ecological protection and tourism development, between irrigation construction and water culture, and gived protection strategies.

A community is the basic organization and living unit of a city. During COVID-19, China’s epidemic prevention and isolation measures against COVID-19 based on the community as the basic unit achieved excellent results and strengthened the impact of non-contact interaction activities on the lifestyles of resident communities. We surveyed and interviewed 1610 respondents on how the epidemic changed residents’ lifestyle habits “before, during, and after COVID-19” in 12 communities in Hangzhou, China. Then, we undertook a comparative analysis and found that, under the stimulus of COVID-19, the frequency of residents using non-contact interaction had increased to varying degrees, community lifestyles had undergone significant changes, and the impact of non-contact interaction on community service facilities was complicated. Our conclusions are as following: (1) under COVID-19, the community space had become a composite space—that is, a new type of community space formed by the fusion of community physical space and community virtual space; (2) non-contact interactive activities were the main content in the community composite space, which differently influenced people’s habits of using existing community service facilities; (3) the influence mechanism was manifested in significant differences and spatial scale effects. Therefore, based on the research results, we propose a model for the configuration of service facilities in community composite spaces. It is necessary to build communities into a healthy, safe, and convenient urban space governance unit to ensure the sustainable development of cities.

The evaluation of scale management suitability provides a comprehensive assessment of the various factors driving farmland management conditions. This research objectively evaluated the conditions for scale management suitability by applying the entropy-TOPSIS method with the aim of effectively balancing the space for agricultural production, the development of towns, and ecological protection. First, to ensure a balance between agricultural production, urban development, and ecological protection, 13 indexes were selected to represent the following three areas: natural factors, socioeconomic factors, and characteristics of cultivated land factors. The original matrix was standardized to evaluate the suitability of natural resources, the social economy, and cultivated land conditions, and a comprehensive suitability evaluation of scale management in the Jiangjin District of Chongqing was conducted. The research results divide the study area into four regions based on the level of scale management suitability. Examining the spatial distribution, the level of scale management suitability decreased gradually from north to south, regions at the high and middle levels of scale management suitability were concentrated in the northern area beside the Yangtze river, and the regions at a low level were concentrated in the southern mountain area. This research can provide a reference for the rational utilization of land resources and land use policymaking.

Abstract The Brčko District was conceived to be a multiethnic political-administrative unit in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina. Various efforts have been made to accomplish this since the year 2000, such as the construction of urban space with the equitable presence of the three national groups recognized by the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the unification of the school system, both with the aim to guarantee human rights, understood as equal cultural rights. This article focuses on the educational system and the monuments policy to critically analyze these endeavors by revealing how policies for the construction of a multinational space have contributed to the maintenance of a divided city, where the borderlines do not need to be official to exist and constantly remind everyone to which group they belong to and what this means.

Ecological suitability evaluation is an important prerequisite for rational distribution of tourism. Take Xi’an as an example, selecting six factors as evaluation indexes: elevation, slope, vegetation coverage, river, landscape quality and traffic. After using RS, GIS techniques and resorting to factor weighted super-position method and obtaining the results. The results show that the most suitable, suitable, basic suitable, unsuitable and unavailable land of Xi’an rural tourism respectively account for 17.5%, 25.4%, 20.63%, 22.12% and 14.35%. According to the distribution pattern of different suitability, the corresponding land use measures are put forward for development of rural tourism in Xi’an city, which provides a theoretical basis for Xi’an to explore the coordinated path of ecological protection and economic development.
