When adolescents go overseas to study, they have to face the challenge of adapting to local cultures, homesickness, and dealing with the stress. This study aimed to investigate the socio-cultural adaptation, homesickness, and perceived stress among international students in relation to social sustainability in a public university in Sabah, Malaysia. This research also related how international students manage both positive and negative impacts on their social life in university. The study included all international students in that university except Bruneian and Indonesian students. The sample group comprised 100 male and 100 female students. This study used four questionnaires: (i) Perceived Stress Scale, (ii) Homesickness Scale, (iii) Socio-cultural Adaptation Scale, and (iv) Revised Sociocultural Adaptation Scale. The results indicated that the socio-cultural adaptation and perceived stress levels were significantly correlated, r (198) = 0.354, p < 0.05. The level of homesickness and perceived stress were also significantly correlated, r (198) = 0.314, p < 0.05. The outcome of this study can help overseas students lead better lives abroad, while the university can arrange relevant activities to help them better adapt to local cultures and perceive less stress. The present study underlined the importance of increasing socio-cultural adaptation and social sustainability and decreasing homesickness among international students studying at the public university in Sabah.

Since China and Sudan have different cultural backgrounds, international students from Sudan certainly will have trouble in learning. How can they improve their cross-cultural adaptation? By taking the international students in China from Confucius Institute at the University of Khartoum (CIUOFK), and by means of questionnaire survey and interviews, this paper finds that difficulties they have to face in cross-cultural adaptation include living environment, the weather, dietary habits and means of transportation. And then this paper has an in-depth exploration of reasons behind these difficulties from four aspects, i.e. living environment, academic environment, interpersonal communication and mental adaptation. In the end, the author suggests that the students should be eased at both universities and individual levels, and also puts forward some pertinent suggestions in terms of those common difficulties for the students.

The research tries to answer the question of ‘does religion, education, and social surroundings play a role in developing a student’s ethical behavior?’ To understand more on the topic, I have surveyed students at the Labuan branch of University Malaysia Sabah in Malaysia, a public university where most of the students are taking a first degree in Business and Computer Studies. Using a survey questionnaire, I test five important hypotheses: whether ethical attitudes are affected by religiosity, religion, social life, university education, and by what happens around them at home. The objective of the survey is to determine whether their awareness of ethical conduct is based on their religion, courses taken at the university, or other external factors. The result of the survey will show whether ethical awareness is determined by internal factors such as religion and home education, or by external factors such as university and school education, courses taken at the university or their social life.

One of the most important topics for Kazakhstani universities in the context of internationalization of higher education is the successful adaptation of international students to a university setting. A high level of students' adaptation, socially and psychologically comfortable conditions for them may increase the number of international students in Kazakhstan from the perspective. The article analyzes the main aspects of international students` socio-cultural adaptation at the West Kazakhstan Marat Ospanov Medical University, Aktobe, the Republic of Kazakhstan (WKMU). A sociological survey was conducted among the Indian students of the Faculty of General Medicine. Challenges of international students at WKMU include the language barrier, the difference in assessment, and education systems in India and Kazakhstan. A favourable condition for the socio-cultural adaptation of international students at WKMU is the organization of intercultural interaction and cooperation of students in the educational space of the university. The results of the study are offered to be taken into consideration by administrative structures, responsible for supervising international students at the university.

We conducted a longitudinal study to explore how the relationship between perceived cultural distance, stress- and problem-focused coping strategies may influence socio-cultural adaptation for international students in China. We collected longitudinal data on overseas students during the Fall semester of September 2013. Data were recollected 90 days later. The results show that: (1) perceived cultural distance did not predict the outcome of socio-cultural adaptation; (2) non-Asian students used more problem-focused coping strategies than Asian students; (3) interaction effect between stress, coping strategy and culture of origin is significant: for non-Asian students, problem-focused coping strategies alleviated the negative impact of stress on adaptation; and for Asian students, problem-focused coping strategies exacerbated the negative impact of stress on adaptation.
