The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effect of social support in the relationship between three strategies of emotional labor (surface acting, deep acting, and genuine expression) and burnout among sports coaches in South Korea. Data were collected from 259 athletic coaches who were working at secondary schools at Gyeongsangnam-do in South Korea. Results indicated that three emotional labor strategies explained a significant amount of variance in each of the three dimensions of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment). In regard to the moderating effect, social support significantly moderated the relationship between surface acting and overall burnout. Specifically, the positive effect of surface acting on burnout was weaker for coaches with a high level of social support than those with a low level of social support. Some ways to engage in appropriate emotional labor strategies and to create environments where social support can be easily accessed were discussed.

Summary This study analysed whether, amongst health care providers in a nursing homes setting, there is a relationship between, on the hand, work demands, autonomy, lack of social support and emotional labor; and on the other hand, symptoms of burnout. It also analysed whether the concept of emotional labor was an additional factor that helped explain variance in burnout over and above the concepts found in the Demand-Control-Support model. The study was based on 130 health care providers (response rate of 75%). Participants filled in a questionnaire that measured the Demand-Control-Support concepts of autonomy, lack of social support and work demands, as well as four dimensions of emotional labor. It assessed burnout in three dimensions, namely emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and personal accomplishment. The results showed a relationship between work demands, social support, several aspects of emotional labor and burnout, whereas no relationship was found between autonomy and burnout. The various concepts, taken together, explained 28 to 30% of the variance in burnout. Emotional labor appeared to be a distinct additional factor in relation to burnout, supplementing the elements found in the Demand-Control-Support model. These results confirm the findings from previous studies in other professions. They demonstrate that, in professions involving a lot of contact with patients, emotional labor may represent a potentially important factor related to health.

The The manner in which politicians express their emotions while interacting with the electorates determines how the electorates will perceive the ability of the politicians to fulfilltheir electoral promises if voted into power. This paper aims to investigate the relationship between politicians’ emotional labour and burnout syndrome. The sample consists of 400politicians spread around Four (4) Local Government Areas in Delta State, namely: Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Oshimili North, and Oshimili South Local Government Area of DeltaState, Nigeria, irrespective of their political party affiliations. Emotional Labour Scale developed by Diefendorff, Croyle, and Gosserand (2005), and the Maslach Burnout Inventory developed by Maslach and Jackson (1986) were used to collect data from the respondents. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics, t-tests, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and regression analysis. Results indicate that the politicians exhibit a high level of surface acting in the discharge of their responsibilities. It also revealed that they show the least amount of genuine emotions in their work, while the level of deep acting is moderate. In terms of burnout, politicians experience a very high level of emotional exhaustion, a moderate level of both depersonalization and lack of personal accomplishment. Results of the regression analysis show that the three dimensions of emotional labour (surface acting, deep acting and genuine emotions) are very important predictors of burnout among politicians. Consequently, this present results offer a very crucial and innovative contribution to emotional labour literature and more studies are therefore required in order to expand the scope of this research to ensure a more adequategeneralization.

The patent portfolio affects the research and development (R&D) decisions of artificial intelligence enterprises, and provides rights protection for the enterprise’s product market, which is of great practical significance for the realization of innovation performance. The aim of this paper is to discover how the patent portfolio of artificial intelligence enterprises affects the relationship between R&D intensity and innovation performance. Based on the panel data of 164 listed enterprises in the A-share artificial intelligence concept sector of China, using the panel fixed effect regression method, the impact of R&D intensity on innovation performance was analyzed, and the moderating effect of the three dimensions of the patent portfolio on the two was examined. Studies have shown that the impact of R&D intensity on innovation performance is in an inverted U-shaped relationship. In addition, the diversity characteristics of the patent portfolio have a moderating effect on the relationship between R&D intensity and innovation performance, and when the enterprise is at a high level of diversity, the two have a U-shaped flip relationship. The size of the patent portfolio has a positive impact on innovation performance. The research results have theoretical and practical significance for the implementation of effective R&D management in artificial intelligence enterprise organizations.
