Evaluating the impact of defects in buildings and ranking the most impactful ones enables construction companies to better choose which paths to take in light of continuous improvement activities to support more sustainable decisions regarding the design and operation of buildings. As a result, the risks of the different choices are more clearly identified while assessing all tangible and intangible aspects of residential building defects in a structured way. Although recent studies on managing construction defects in residential buildings have focused on monetary losses associated with maintenance activities based on the defect’s frequency and severity, these studies do not take into account the levels of customer satisfaction. To address this gap, this paper proposes a novel evaluation method of the impact of defects to support decision-making in managing defect occurrences in residential buildings. The goal is to rank the defects’ impact based on a combination of some critical aspects: frequency of occurrence, financial considerations on repairing such defects, the impact that these defects have on customer satisfaction, and the cost and complexity of preventing and minimizing these defect occurrences through continuous improvement activities. The method consists of a structured set of steps that use data from technical assistance departments and customer satisfaction surveys, where information about the users’ level of satisfaction and the occurrence of defects is available. In this paper, data obtained from a construction company were used to test and validate the proposed method. The method also examines the challenges and barriers associated with the technique and points out that difficulties in acquiring reliable data are a bottleneck for making conscious and sustainable decisions to address construciton defects. Moreover, the case study results highlight essential capabilities needed by companies to correctly assess the impact of defects, such as correctly logging data in a structured database and having skilled personnel to verify defects users might have complained about. The paper ends by proposing a set of guidelines to use the method and stressing that structured methods for decision-making are crucial to analyze construction defects in a structured way while also incorporating the user’s perspective. The proposed method is expected to improve sustainable managerial decisions where economic, environmental, social, and technical risks can be accounted for to enhance the quality of projects from the customer’s perspective. Such analysis can help optimize and prioritize the use of resources and minimize the economic impact of activities on the construction company.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify workplace factors with an impact on lean performance (LP). This can lead to better LP outcomes, thus facilitating organizations to smoothly move from the conventional to lean management. Design/methodology/approach The direct effects of training, knowledge acquisition and organizational culture are empirically investigated using data from 126 managers employed at a global company, which recently has improved its LP. Study’s hypotheses were analyzed with hierarchical regression models. Findings The findings suggest that not all of the aforementioned workplace factors holistically affect LP. Only organizational culture is associated to the four LP variables (i.e. continuous improvement, waste, ergonomy and product quality). Training and knowledge acquisition offer partially effects on LP with training to contribute mostly to predicting continuous improvements. Knowledge acquisition alone, has significant yet negative impact on both continuous improvement and ergonomy. Even more, when training is combined with knowledge acquisition the results are different. Originality/value As this study highlights the impact of workplace practices on LP, attributes mainly importance to the distinct effects that each of the aforementioned factors has on the four distinct LP variables. Although the study results reflect a particular case, its recommendations could facilitate practitioners to achieve better lean outcomes.

Health care professionals must understand the impact of blood product transfusions and transfusion therapy procedures to ensure high-quality patient care, positive outcomes, and wise use of resources in blood management programs. Understanding transfusions of blood and blood products is also important because of the number of treatments performed, which affects individual patients and health care system resources. This article reviews research findings to acquaint health care professionals with the most successful protocols for blood, blood product, and coagulation factor transfusions. Damage control resuscitation in bleeding trauma patients, protocols for patients without trauma who are undergoing surgical procedures that place them at risk for excessive bleeding, and protocols for patients with sepsis are addressed. Emerging research continues to help guide mass transfusion treatments (restrictive vs liberal, balanced, and goal-directed treatment). Although available study results provide some guidance, questions remain. Additional research by health care professionals is needed.

Selecting the favorable conceptual design scheme is the first step to make a new product development (NPD) successfully. To guarantee reliability and rationality of decision-making about multiple design schemes in conceptual design stage under the impact of uncertainties and qualitative information, we have employed KJ method to cluster the evaluation factors into 5 clusters such as emotion, ergonomics, aesthetics, core technology, and impact; and fuzzy mathematics method to deal with uncertainties and qualitative information effectively. The weights of evaluation factors were calculated by analytical hierarchy process (AHP). Fuzzy mathematics method is the comprehensive evaluation method and quantitative analysis which based on the “maximum membership degree evaluation”. All design schemes are ranked and selected according to the multiple evaluation score of parts with their weights. Finally, a case study for decision-making is presented to demonstrate the application of the evaluation method.

Under fierce market competition and the demand for low-carbon economy, cold chain logistics companies have to pay attention to customer satisfaction and carbon emissions for better development. In order to simultaneously consider cost, customer satisfaction, and carbon emissions in the cold chain logistics path optimization problem, based on the idea of cost–benefit, this paper proposes a comprehensive cold chain vehicle routing problem optimization model with the objective function of minimizing the cost of unit satisfied customer. For customer satisfaction, this paper uses the punctuality of delivery as the evaluation standard. For carbon emissions, this paper introduces the carbon trading mechanism to calculate carbon emissions costs. An actual case data is used with a cycle evolutionary genetic algorithm to carry out computational experiments in the model. First, the effectiveness of the algorithm and model were verified by a numerical comparison experiment. The optimization results of the model show that increasing the total cost by a small amount can greatly improve average customer satisfaction, thereby obtaining a highly cost-effective solution. Second, the impact of carbon price on total costs, carbon emissions, and average customer satisfaction have also been numerically analyzed. The experimental results show that as carbon price increases, there are two opposite trends in total costs, depending on whether carbon quota is sufficient. Increasing carbon price within a certain range can effectively reduce carbon emissions, but at the same time it will reduce average customer satisfaction to a certain extent; there is a trade-off between carbon emissions and customer satisfaction. This model enriches the optimization research of cold chain logistics distribution, and the study results complement the impact research of carbon price on carbon emissions and customer satisfaction. Finally, some practical managerial implications for enterprises and government are offered.

Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a data-oriented performance evaluation method that has a very satisfactory performance when there are multiple inputs and outputs presented in the form of set of peer Decision Making Units (DMU). In the discussion of DEA, basically measures the efficiency of each DMU in specific performance based on DEA Efficiency Scores. In DEA, when there is a value of Non-Zero Input and Output Slacks then this often means inefficiency. This scalar measures directly with the input surplus and the output of the short decision of the decision making unit (DMU). Universitas Malikussaleh as one of the State Universities in Indonesia, it is necessary to follow the regulations of the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia (KEMENRISTEKDIKTI), one of which is the measurement of efficiency based on the number of lecturers research, the efficient use of resources included in the number of lecturers and employees, as well as students who can be accommodated based on efficiency measurements using DEA. This paper will measure the efficiency of each department in Malikussaleh University and if there is an inefficient department then it will be measured based on slack-based measures to advise aspects that need attention so that the department can be efficient.

The article examines the significance and role of eco-management in the system of green economy as it is connected with the need to develop new scientific and methodological approaches to managerial decision-making aimed at ensuring resource-oriented production and economic activities of an organization. The purpose of the research is to develop management technologies for eco-management to build a green economy. The eco-management technologies are studied in the following areas: 1) an analysis and evaluation of statistical observations on economic development trends and identification of issues in resource conservation, 2) justification of the need for a new approach to managing organizations, namely considering an environmental component in the decision-making process, 3) the choice of resource-saving measures in terms of a limited financial budget, 4) algorithmic implementation of environmental management components as an important component of an organization's competitive strategy. The methodical approach to the choice of environmental measures and criteria of resource utilization completeness is suggested. This allows forming the information space as a basis for making management decisions in the field of ecological safety of industrial organizations. During the last decade, the main trends of economic development have confirmed the importance of resource efficiency as far as economic and environmental aspects, which has allowed to determine the impact of research results on the economy and the environment from the standpoint of sustainable development. To this end, practical recommendations for reusing industrial waste in the production activities of companies have been provided. Within the established system of principles, criteria, and factors of rational and efficient use of resources in the conditions of modern economy, the issues of identifying and revealing the features in the development of branch organizations within the mechanism of their resource efficiency have proved to be crucial and of paramount importance.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to examine the relevance of American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) to management voluntary forecasts of earnings. The authors further investigate whether the market reacts to such forecasts in respect of satisfaction.Design/methodology/approachThe authors’ econometric models are constructed from previous work in accounting to specify the effect of ACSI on the issuance and optimism of management forecasts. Our model also specifies the impact of management optimism with respect to ACSI on stock returns. The data consisting of US firms in the 2001-2010 is collated from several databases and analyzed using multiple regression procedures.FindingsResults indicate that ACSI is positively associated with the likelihood of issuing management forecasts and boosts management optimism. It is also found that investors react negatively to management optimism that is inherent in forecasts and results from satisfaction.Research limitations/implicationsThe authors’ research findings not only complement prior work on the linkage between customer satisfaction and firm value by incorporating a managerial perspective but also respond to the recent call for further work on how relevant marketing metrics drive organizational decisions and firms’ financial performance. It should be noted that findings are limited to firms that release both a voluntary issuance of management forecasts and ACSI.Practical implicationsThe study results shed light on the justification of marketing expenditures and provide a response to the call for marketing accountability. The study results also enable managers to make better decisions about whether and when to issue a forecast. The authors’ research further calls stakeholders’ attention to the presence of management forecast optimism with respect to satisfaction.Originality/valueDespite the importance of managers as primary information generators and disseminators in the capital markets, there appears to be little discussion on the satisfaction’s relevance to market participants, particularly in relation to the role of managers. Therefore, this investigation is the first to empirically show the relevance of ACSI to management earnings forecasts that have been ignored in the marketing literature.

Purpose: To identify the steps taken by organizations during the time of crisis concerning Human Capital and understand the impact each of these steps has on the employee engagement for the employees within the organization. Proposed Design/Methodology/Approach: Post the literature review, qualitative research is conducted through in-depth interviews with the Managers, who were part of the decision-making, in the organizations that went through crisis period (Sample size: 20-30) and a quantitative study is conducted to capture the perspectives of the employees from those organizations (Sample size: 70-100). Practical/Theoretical Implication: The study results enable organizations to stay cognizant of the pros and cons of the decisions they make in terms of employee engagement, which helps in successfully overcoming the crisis with minimal traction. Originality/Value: While there are standalone papers on each topic, this paper converges them coherently to study the overall effect from both employee's and the organization's perspectives.

This study seeks answers to two questions: what types of intellectual capital are affected by IT and how can IT affect these types of intellectual capital? An analysis of intellectual capital indicators of the banking industry using an input-process-output model reveals that the process mediator variables, namely management capabilities, are highly affected by information technology. These management capabilities include risk management, quality management, taking advantage of new opportunities, product development and delivery, marketing management, and fulfilling customer needs. Information technology plays a key role in supporting decision-making, making possible business innovations and tightening controls of various processes through its tracking, informational, dissemination, analytical, simulative, and detection capabilities. Moreover, disintermediation is possible because of information technology. Although limited to one industry, it is believed that the study results can provide organizations with useful guidelines for managing intellectual capital with information technology.
