Food waste has become a critical issue in modern society, especially in the urbanized and fast-growing cities of Asia. The increase in food waste has serious negative impacts on environmental sustainability, water and land resources, and food security, as well as climate and greenhouse gas emissions. Through a specific case study in Da Nang City, Vietnam, this paper examines the extent of food waste generation at the consumption stages, the eating habits of consumers, food waste from households and service establishments, as well as prospects for the reuse of food waste as pig feed. The results of this study indicate that per capita food waste generation in Da Nang has increased from 0.39 to 0.41kg in 2016, 0.46 in 2017, and reached 0.52kg in 2018. According to the results of our consumer survey, 20% of respondents stated that they often generate food waste, 67% stated they sometimes do, and 13% stated they rarely do. Furthermore, 66% of surveyed households stated that their food waste is collected and transported by pig farmers to be used as feed for pigs. The use of food waste as feed for pigs is a typical feature in Da Nang. The study also found that there is a high level of consumer awareness and willingness to participate in the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) program, which was being initiated by the city government. In service facilities such as resorts and hotels, daily food waste reached 100–200 kg in large facilities and 20–120 kg in small facilities. This waste was also collected for use in pig farming. However, there has been a fall in demand for pig feed in line with a decrease in the number of pig farms due to the African swine fever epidemic that occurred during the implementation of this study. This paper suggests that there is a strong need to take both consumer-oriented waste prevention and waste management measures, such as waste segregation at source and introduction of effective food waste recycling techniques, to ensure that food waste can be safely and sustainably used as a “valuable resource” rather than “wasted.”

Konsep pengelolaan sampah telah lama berubah dari pemusnahan atau pembuangan menjadi pemanfaatan. Namun konsep ini belum diikuti dengan langkah nyata oleh pemerintah. Kepedulian terhadap kelestarian lingkungan telah mendorong beberapa kelompok masyarakat, lembaga atau institusi untuk bergerak aktif dalam pemanfaatan sampah. Universitas Andalas sebagai lembaga pendidikan tinggi terkemuka di Pulau Sumatera sudah saatnya mengambil peran aktif dalam melakukan pengelolaan sampah yang berwawasan lingkungan. Timbulan sampah yang cukup besar yaitu 28 m3/hari pada tahun 2012, yang diproyeksikan akan menjadi 34 m3/hari atau 9 ton/hari pada tahun 2017, menawarkan potensi cukup besar untuk dimanfaatkan. Pada tahun proyeksi 2017 dari total timbulan sampah, 26,6 % (2,4 ton/h) adalah sampah makanan, 9,8 % (0,9 ton/h) adalah sampah penyapuan taman/jalan, 30,0 % (2,7 ton/h) adalah sampah plastik, 25,3 % (2,3 ton/h) adalah sampah kertas, 1,5 % (0,1 ton/h) adalah sampah kaleng, logam dan besi dan 6,9 % (0,6 ton/h) adalah sampah lain-lain (tekstil, karet, kayu, kaca dll). Dari total sampah makanan dan penyapuan halaman/jalan, 33,7 % berpotensi untuk menghasilkan kompos sekitar 1,2 ton/hari, 2,1 % (0,2 ton/h) dapat dimanfaatkan untuk proses biogas dan sisanya 0,5 % (0,05 ton/h) ditimbun di TPA. Sampah plastik dan kertas sebesar 55,3 % dapat dimanfaatkan kembali atau dijual ke PT. Semen Padang sebagai tambahan bahan bakar unit kiln. Dari 1,5 % sampah kaleng, logam dan besi, 1,3 % dapat dimanfaatkan kembali atau dijual ke pihak ketiga sedangkan sisanya yang hanya sebesar 0,02 ton/h dibuang ke TPA Air Dingin. Selanjutnya, sisa timbulan sampah sebesar 6,9 % yang berupa sampah tekstil, karet, kayu, kaca dan lain-lain dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan bakar alternatif pada kiln PT. Semen Padang. Jika konsep ini dapat dilaksanakan, maka Universitas Andalas dianggap mampu melakukan pemanfaatan sampah hingga 99,3 %. However, this concept is not fully applied yet by the government. Environmental sustainability awareness has been stimulating some community groups and institutions to actively involve in waste utilization. Andalas University as a leading higher education institution in Sumatera Island must give active contributions in solid waste management for environmental sustainability. Solid waste generation of 28 m3/day, which is projected to be 34 m3/day or 9 ton/day in 2017, offers huge enough potency for utilization. From the total solid waste generation in 2017, 26.6 % (2.4 ton/day) is food waste, 9.8 % (0.9 ton/day) is garden/road waste, 30.0 % (2.7 ton/day) is plastic waste, 25.3 % (2.3 ton/day) is paper waste, 1.5 % (0.1 ton/day) can, metal and iron waste and 6.9 % (0.6 ton/day) is micellaneous waste (textile, rubber, wood, glass etc). 33.7 % of food waste and garden/road waste may be recycled to compost around 1.2 ton/day, 2.1 % (0.2 ton/day) may be utilized for biogas and the rest 0.5 % (0.05 ton/day) is sent to TPA Air Dingin. Plastic waste and paper wich is 55.5 %, may be used for additional fuel for kiln unit of PT. Semen Padang. From 1.5 % can, metal and iron waste, 1.3 % may be reused or sold to third party while the reset (only 0.02 ton/day) must be disposed to TPA Air Dingin. Furthermore, the rest of waste generation account for 6.9 % composed of textile, rubber, kayu, kaca dll may be used as alternative fuel for kiln PT.Semen Padang. If this concept is practiced, then the Andalas University is considered capable of utilizing their waste up to 99.3 %.Keyword: Utilization solid waste, environmental sustainability, management of solid waste

The present paper attempts to expose how the scientific world-view of nature contributes to the present environmental crisis. Alongside this, it relates European Renaissance, humanism, secularism, the scientific and industrial revolutions, modern philosophy, scientism, technology-based modern life, consumerism-based modern society, etc. with current environmental problems. By focusing on Nasr’s traditional understanding of nature, the paper explores how materialistic and mechanistic world-views are deeply connected with the present ecological crisis. It also offers a critical analysis of Nasr’s spiritual and religious world-view of nature and examines its relevance. In doing so, it aims to highlight some demerits of the present world-view, and to call to reform current perceptions of nature by revitalizing traditional wisdom in order to protect the environment from further degradation. Thus, the paper is scholarly addition to the ongoing discourse on the issue of religions and the environment. Disamping itu, kertas ini akan menhubungkaitkan Gerakan Revolusi Humanisma di Eropah, sekularisme, revolusi  sains dan perindustrian, falsafah moden, saintisme, kehidupan moden yang berasaskan teknologi, masyarakat moden yang berasaskan consumerisme, etc. dengan krisis alam sekitar yang berlaku dewasa ini.  Dengan memahami pandangan Nasr terhadap alam sekitar, kertas ini akan merungkai bagaimana pandangan materialistik (kebendaan) dan mekanistik mempengaruhi krisis ekologi masa kini. Ia juga akan menganalisa pandangan spiritual dan agama Nasr terhadap alam sekitar secara kritikal dan akan menilai sejauh mana kesesuaiannya. Dengan sedemikian dapat menyedarkan manusia tentang kecacatan pandangan semasa, yang kemudiannya akan membawa kepada pembaharuan persepsi mereka terhadap alam sekitar dengan cara menghidupkan semula nilai-nilai tradisional demi mengelakkan kemerosotan alam sekitar. Kertas ini akan memuatkan idea-idea para cendiakawan dalam membincangkan isu  berkaitan agama dan alam sekitar. Food waste from the food service and hospitality industry is increasing, especially in Mezze serving restaurants, where a variety of dishes are usually served. To date, information on the factors affecting food waste generation in restaurants is scarce. This study aimed to identify the drivers and determinants of food waste generation while dining out at restaurants serving Mezze-type cuisine. According to the results from a convenience sample of 496 restaurant clientele, gender, age, and marital status did not affect food waste generation. Diners in both low and high price range restaurants waste above the grand mean compared to middle-range ones. Waste generation decreased significantly as the number of diners per table increased. However, ordering water-pipe, alcohol, or more dishes contributed significantly to food waste generation. As food waste is not the outcome of a single behavior, our study puts food waste generation drivers and determinants while dining out in perspective.

<p>The purpose of this paper is the presentation of the results compiled from self weighing of household food waste and self filling of waste collection diaries that took place in Greece. A diary was compiled and given to 101 urban households in various areas of the country. The participants were asked to weigh and write down in the diary every food item wasted in their households for two full weeks (i.e., 14 days). The total per capita food waste generation in Greece is estimated to be 76.1 (±68.3) kg/inh.y. This figure is divided into the avoided food waste fraction which equals to 25.9 (±34.9) kg/inh.y, and the unavoidable fraction which is estimated to be 50.2 (±47.1) kg/inh.y. The use of diaries for recording food that is thrown away from households is a methodology that underestimates the food wasted in households because households tend to be cautious when they know that they have to weigh and report the amount of food that they throw away. The current research is the first of its kind, presenting actual field data for food waste generation by households in Greece.</p>

During the acute phase of the African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV) epidemic in China, complete feed, and feed ingredients from three mills were tested for ASFV DNA by PCR. Across mills, the percentage of positive sample pools detected in complete feed ranged from 0.5% to 1.2%, and from 0.2% to 1.8% in feed ingredients, including positive pools of wheat, rice, corn, and soy samples. This is the first report of ASFV contamination in feed under commercial conditions in China.

Abstract Food waste generation and disposal have led to several environmental problems, especially in developing countries. This phenomenon is partly because most cities rapidly urbanize, which results in population increase, urban settlement and waste generation. Improper management of waste has continued to create environmental problems. These problems have indeed interfered with the inadequate measures in managing other organic waste such as food waste. Food waste can be fermented and used for pathogen inactivation in fecal sludge (FS). The continual decrease in global crop production due to soil erosion, nutrient runoff and loss of organic matter has generated interest in using FS for soil amendment. However, due to the high number of pathogens in FS that are harmful to humans, FS must be treated before being used in agriculture. Thus, given the high amounts of food waste generated globally and the lactic acid potential of fermented food waste, several researchers have recently proposed the use of fermented food waste to suppress pathogens in FS. This review presents the various approaches in pathogen inactivation in FS using different types of food waste. On the basis of the literature review, the major problems associated with the generation, collection and application of food waste in pathogen inactivation in FS are discussed. Moreover, the trends and challenges that concern the applicability of each method are critically reviewed.

The chapter examines the role of recycling and reuse of fashion in order to achieve environmental sustainability. The chapter supports its conclusion by various reports that recycling of textile waste can be solutions to many environmental issues caused by fast fashion. However, textile recycling is an old term; in recent years, it has gained attention again due to fast fashion culture in significant parts of the world, which has resulted in overconsumption of textiles and led to waste generation. Waste recycling has become a multibillion industry. New ways are being created in terms of the development of sorting machines, design inputs, and innovative high-value products to make recycling a profitable proposition. The chapter also highlights how the second-hand market of clothes and the internet as a facilitator can help in reducing textile waste.
