The present meeting report aims to cover the scientific activities of the 4th French Bacteriophage Network (Phages.fr) symposium which took place during 24th–25th September 2018, at the Agora du Haut-Carré in Talence (France). The hosting institute was University Bordeaux and 72 participants attended the meeting from both public and private sectors, coming from France, Belgium, Ireland, Germany, Portugal and Canada. The scientific program was structured in three themed oral sessions entitled “ecology and evolution”, “bacteriophage-host molecular interaction”, and “therapy and biotechnology applications” consisting of 21 oral presentations, including three keynote lectures, and a presentation of the activities of the Spanish bacteriophage network. A poster session included 22 presentations.

This special issue of the ZAS Papers in Linguistics contains a collection of papers of the French-German Thematic Summerschool on "Cognitive and physical models of speech production, and speech perception and of their interaction". Organized by Susanne Fuchs (ZAS Berlin), Jonathan Harrington (IPdS Kiel), Pascal Perrier (ICP Grenoble) and Bernd Pompino-Marschall (HUB and ZAS Berlin) and funded by the German-French University in Saarbrücken this summerschool was held from September 19th till 24th 2004 at the coast of the Baltic Sea at the Heimvolkshochschule Lubmin (Germany) with 45 participants from Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy and Canada. The scientific program of this summerschool that is reprinted at the end of this volume included 11 key-note presentations by invited speakers, 21 oral presentations and a poster session (8 presentations). The names and addresses of all participants are also given in the back matter of this volume. All participants was offered the opportunity to publish an extended version of their presentation in the ZAS Papers in Linguistics. All submitted papers underwent a review and an editing procedure by external experts and the organizers of the summerschool. As it is the case in a summerschool, papers present either works in progress, or works at a more advanced stage, or tutorials. They are ordered alphabetically by their first author's name, fortunately resulting in the fact that this special issue starts out with the paper that won the award as best pre-doctoral presentation, i.e. Sophie Dupont, Jérôme Aubin and Lucie Ménard with "A study of the McGurk effect in 4 and 5-year-old French Canadian children".

This article reports on the JASAL 2016 Annual Conference held on December 10, 2016 at Konan Women’s University in Kobe, Japan. JASAL (Japan Association for Self-Access Learning) is a non-profit professional organization devoted to promoting self-access learning in Japan. The conference consisted of opening remarks by JASAL president Hisako Yamashita, a plenary talk by Dr. Jo Mynard, twenty oral presentations on various self-access learning topics, twelve poster presentations, and tours of the e-space, which is a self-access center at Konan Women’s University. Ninety-five participants from over forty institutions attended. In this summary, the author reports on the day’s events, featuring select presentations on SALC design, leadership, integration into curriculum, training, and lessons learned.

The objective of this review is to summarize recent research advances in the detection and prevention of ovarian cancer and discuss the experts’ opinions of future directions. The 12th Biennial Ovarian Cancer Research Symposium was held in Seattle, Washington, in September 2018. At this meeting, experts in ovarian cancer research gathered to present and discuss recent breakthroughs and their visions of future ovarian cancer research. Session 1 of the symposium focused on the detection and prevention of ovarian cancer. It included two invited oral presentations from Ranjit Manchanda, MD, PhD (Barts Cancer Institute) and Rosana Risques, PhD (University of Washington). Another eight oral presentations were selected from abstract submissions. Fifteen abstracts were presented in poster format. These presentations covered topics including cellular origin of high-grade serous cancer, risk factors for ovarian cancer, new methods for early detection of ovarian cancer, mechanisms underlying ovarian cancer development, and new therapeutic approaches for preventing ovarian cancer from forming or progressing. In conclusion, a clear understanding of the cellular origin and molecular mechanisms underlying the initiation of high-grade serous cancer is essential for developing effective means for early detection and prevention of this most devastating type of ovarian cancer. Recognizing the complexity of ovarian cancer and appreciating that ovarian cancer is not a single disease will help us to generate proper models, design rational experiments, and collect and analyze patient data in a meaningful way. A concerted effort in the field will help to bridge the basic science and clinical applications and lead to more precise and effective detection and treatment.

The 2019 ECTRIMS Congress, in Stockholm, has had record-breaking figures for both attendance and scientific production. There were 9361 participants from 100 different countries for a total of 1541 abstracts. Upon invitation of the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS) executive committee, the authors of this meeting report assessed abstracts from all poster and oral presentations for novelty, scientific quality and relevance for basic and clinical multiple sclerosis (MS) research. The objective of this report is to highlight a selection of basic, translational and clinical studies out of the many outstanding projects that were presented. Abstracts and references cited in our report were chosen at the discretion of the authors and all co-authors and the ECTRIMS executive committee agreed on the selection. In the event of discrepancies between the abstract and the uploaded poster or presentation, we aimed to present data derived from the poster or presentation. All abstracts are accessible through the ECTRIMS online library ( https://onlinelibrary.ectrimscongress.eu/ectrims/#!*menu=36*browseby=3*sortby=2*ce_id=160 ) and also published in this journal (Volume 25 Issue 2_suppl, September 2019; https://journals.sagepub.com/toc/msja/25/2_suppl ).
