Influence of the oil production complex on surface and underground water and their current ecological state

The article deals with the problems of surface waters in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug-Yugra, which contain a large amount of oil products and phenols. Oil is the most dangerous pollutant for water resources. The land "flavored" with oil dies for several decades, oil oppresses soil biota, pollutes surface and ground waters. We need innovative purification methods and technologies to purify and improve the conditions of water.

The target analyzes the features of rationing the content of chemical pollutants, heavy metals in surface waters, and the results of basic monitoring of these groundwaters. To identify chemical pollutants, several nuclei of the studied region are examined. The paper considered the issues of the ecological state of underground water under the influence of anthropogenic (in particular, industrial production) impacts.


Formulation of the problem. Water is one of the most important resources in the world. The Volyn region has significant reserves of surface and underground water, but irrational use of water resources leads to their depletion. Furthermore, today the anthropogenic loading on natural ecosystems is increasing, this factor leads to the deterioration of the ecological state of water resources. So that, research the peculiarities of the water using and ecological state of water bodies and underground aquifers is necessary for conservation and restoration water resources of the region. Review of previous publications and studies. The problem of water use in the Volyn region was being studied by many scientists. The information base of this article includes number scientific works, published by K. I. Herenchuk, F. V. Zuzuk, L. V. Ilin, Ya. O. Molchak, R. V. Migas, M. R. Zabokrytska, V. K. Khil-chevskyi, V. O. Fesiuk, S. V. Polianskyi, T. S. Pavlovska, O. V. Ilina, M. A. Khvesyk, I. V. Sanina, H. H. Liutyi, L. I. Shevchuk and others. Moreover, statistical information about water use and state of water resources was given in the ecological passports, yearbooks of the Volyn region and Ukraine. Also, systematic observations of aquatic ecosystems are carried out by Regional water resources office in the Volyn region. Methods. The methodological base of the study is theoretical foundations of the doctrine of nature management. The authors applied mathematical-statistical, graphic and cartographic methods. Besides, methods of induction, deduction, comparative analysis and synthesis were used during the research. Results. The article is devoted to the study of water resources in the Volyn region, peculiarities of their use by the population and economy. The authors pay attention to the all sources of water in the Volyn region and characterize their distribution. It is mentioned that the most important source of water is aquifers. The authors give information about the structure of water use by type of economic activity. It is clarified that the largest consumers of water are agricultural enterprises and communal services. Agriculture consumes water resources for irrigation and other purposes, however, much water in this branch of economy is used irrationally. Also, large amount of extracted water is exploited for water supply of settlements in the Volyn region. But, only 5,5 % of the used water is consumed by industry, in particular, by food and sugar branch. Besides, the peculiarities of water usage in the administrative districts of the Volyn region are analyzed. The authors investigated that the biggest consumers of water are population and economy of Lutsk, Gorokhiv, Ivanychi and Volodymyr-Volynskiy districts, the least water usage is inherent for Shatsk, Lyubeshiv and Lokachinsky districts. Moreover, it is mentioned, that the features of water usage in the Volyn region change in time. For example, the amount of water consumption during 2000-2014 was decreasing as a result of social-economic causes. The article considers the problem of the influence of different sources of pollution on the water resources in the Volyn region. It is noted, that the most vulnerable to the anthropogenic loading are surface water bodies, they are polluted generally by untreated sewage. For example, river waters consist many pollutants, concentration of which exceeds the maximum permissible concentration. Scientific novelty and practical significance. The structure and dynamics of water consumption in the Volyn region is characterized for the first time. Particular attention is paid to the research of modern ecological state of surface and underground water resources in connection with water use and other economic activities. The results of this exploring will help to optimize water use and to conserve water resources.

The article focuses on examining the influence of fluctuations in annual precipitation amount on the quality of surface waters. Water quality was estimated with data on BOD, COD and phosphate–ion concentration within five selected regions of Ukraine. Analysis of the precipitation data (1991 – 2010) showed different regional trends. Using the statistics, determination of the interconnection between precipitation amount and water resources quality were done. The obtained regularities and associated uncertainties can be used for prediction of changes in water resource quality and as a guide for future adaptation to possible climate change.

Summary Fracturing is the necessary means of tight oil development, and the most common fracturing fluid is slickwater. However, the Loess Plateau of the Ordos Basin in China is seriously short of water resources. Therefore, the tight oil development in this area by hydraulic fracturing is extremely costly and environmentally unfriendly. In this paper, a new method using supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) (ScCO2) as the prefracturing energized fluid is applied in hydraulic fracturing. This method can give full play to the dual advantages of ScCO2 characteristics and mixed-water fracturing technology while saving water resources at the same time. On the other hand, this method can reduce reservoir damage, change rock microstructure, and significantly increase oil production, which is a development method with broad application potential. In this work, the main mechanism, the system-energy enhancement, and flowback efficiency of ScCO2 as the prefracturing energized fluid were investigated. First, the microscopic mechanism of ScCO2 was studied, and the effects of ScCO2 on pores and rock minerals were analyzed by nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) test, X-ray-diffraction (XRD) analysis, and scanning-electron-microscope (SEM) experiments. Second, the high-pressurechamber-reaction experiment was conducted to study the interaction mechanism between ScCO2 and live oil under formation conditions, and quantitively describe the change of high-pressure physical properties of live oil after ScCO2 injection. Then, the numerical-simulation method was applied to analyze the distribution and existence state of ScCO2, as well as the changes of live-oil density, viscosity, and composition in different stages during the full-cycle fracturing process. Finally, four injection modes of ScCO2-injection core-laboratory experiments were designed to compare the performance of ScCO2 and slickwater in terms of energy enhancement and flowback efficiency, then optimize the optimal CO2-injection mode and the optimal injection amount of CO2slug. The results show that ScCO2 can dissolve calcite and clay minerals (illite and chlorite) to generate pores with sizes in the range of 0.1 to 10 µm, which is the main reason for the porosity and permeability increases. Besides, the generated secondary clay minerals and dispersion of previously cemented rock particles will block the pores. ScCO2 injection increases the saturation pressure, expansion coefficient, volume coefficient, density, and compressibility of crude oil, which are the main mechanisms of energy increase and oil-production enhancement. After analyzing the four different injection-mode tests, the optimal one is to first inject CO2 and then inject slickwater. The CO2 slug has the optimal value, which is 0.5 pore volume (PV) in this paper. In this paper, the main mechanisms of using ScCO2 as the prefracturing energized fluid are illuminated. Experimental studies have proved the pressure increase, production enhancement, and flowback potential of CO2 prefracturing. The application of this method is of great significance to the protection of water resources and the improvement of the fracturing effect.

During the last few decades, a critical scarcity of water has occurred in the Middle East due to climate change and the mismanagement of water resources. The situation is complicated by the absence of an effective legislative framework at the local level as well as by the incapability and disrepute of the local water authorities. Most Iraqi citizens depend on the surface waters of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which have their sources in upstream neighbouring countries. Water crises concerning the shared waters urgently require a solution at the international level. Unfortunately, Iraq has faced several wars in a row (1980–2003), which has prevented the country from establishing its institutions. The rapid increase in the population of the transboundary countries on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, and the high demands on agriculture, are accelerating water exploitation. In this paper, the present state of water management in Iraq from the viewpoint of the legislative framework, water balance, and transboundary issues will be discussed, with special attention to Kurdistan. Many legislative documents have been established or amended by the Iraqi and Kurdistan parliaments since 2003. In 2015, the Kurdistan Government Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, in cooperation with the EU, issued a guide for environmental legislation related to all environmental components such as air, water, and soil. The recommendations on actions needed in the water management in Kurdistan will be presented; they are inspired by the Water Framework Directive (WFD) (2000/60/EC) implemented in EU member states.
