The aim of this study was to evaluate the productivity of Hypericum perforatum L. raw materials and seeds in culture conditions in the Moscow Region, as well as to predict the yield of the aforementioned indicators. Saint John’s wort variety ‘Solnechny’ served as the object of the research. As a result, we found that at the second year of vegetation, the predicted yield of the air-dried mass in the Moscow Region, taking into account the heterogeneity of the stalk, was 601 kg/ha; by the fourth year, it increased to 1079 kg/ha. The seed yield varied slightly and amounted to 80–120 kg/ha.

The results of studying the growth, development and formation of the raw phytomass of Hypericum perforatum plants of different geographic origin during the introduction in the middle taiga subzone of the Komi Republic are presented. Seven samples of Hypericum perforatum were examined, including two cultivars: Zolotodolinsky and Solnechny. A sample (Tallinn No. 885) was identified, which differed in earlier dates of the onset of phenological phases. Hypericum perforatum plants under culture conditions in the middle taiga subzone of the Komi Republic are characterized by a stable developmental rhythm. It has been determined that the number of generative shoots in Hypericum perforatum increases with age. So, in two-year-old plants this indicator was 3-4, in four-year-old plants - 18-26 pcs. per individual. It has been established that from the second year of life, with the seedling method of growing, Hypericum perforatum plants are able to form high yields of medicinal raw materials. As a result of an assessment of the productivity of samples of cultivar Solnechny and sample from Barnaul.

Aim. The purpose of this work was to determine the dose of g- and X-ray pre-sowing irradiation of seeds of Hypericum perforatum L., causing an increase in biomass and the accumulation of flavonoids in medicinal raw materials. Methods. X-ray and g-irradiation of seeds, biometric methods, flavonoids extraction, quantification of flavonoid content in extracts using spectrophotometry, qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis of extracts using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), common statistical methods for processing and analysis of data. Results. It was shown that acute X-ray pre-sowing irradiation of H. perforatum seeds at a dose of 20 Gy leads to an increase in the crop of medicinal raw material without losing its pharmaceutical value. Irradiation also increases concentration of quercetin, routine, hyperoside in herbal medicines, grown from seeds, that was chronically irradiated with g-radiation in a total dose of 1 Gy. The HPLC analysis of extracts confirmed that the qualitative composition of ethanol extracts of H. perforatum did not change due to the effect of irradiation on the seeds. Conclusions. The obtained results confirm the possibility of application of pre-sowing irradiation of seeds of H. perforatum in the range of 1–35 Gy in order to increase its productivity and increase the pharmaceutical value of the medicinal raw material. This study was carried out to test the possibility of hexavalent chromium administration through drinking water to induce the structural damage in rat�s adrenal glands and the possibility of Hypericum perforatum extract to faith against chromium aggression. Chromium induced cellular stress was determined by the expression level assessment of the Bcl2 genes family, known to modulate the apoptotic pathway. Obtained results showed that exposure to chromium altered adrenal glands morphology, by induction of apoptosis. When Hypericum perforatum extract was administered expression level of Bcl2 genes and histological lesions in adrenal glands were significantly reduced.

Hypericum perforatum L., traditionally called St. John�s Wort has been used for decades as a phyto-therapeutic herb due to antidepressant, antimicrobial and antiseptic properties. As a result, the presented study evaluates the influence of the harvesting season for the Hypericum perforatum L. plant material, which is crucial for obtaining significant amounts of active principles.

St. John s Wort (SJW) or Hypericum perforatum L. is a therapeutic plant highly used in pharmacology. Recent in vivo anti-cancer action of naphtodianthrones (NTs) has extended the research related to enrichment methodologies of SJW phyto-extracts. Therefore, the presented study pursuits the optimization of single-step extraction methodologies to obtain NTs-rich extracts from SJW.

Abstract Background Melatonin acts as a signaling hormone and entraining agent in many organisms. We studied the spatiotemporal regulation and influence of light (photoperiods, intensities, and spectral qualities) on melatonin concentration in the medicinal herb Hypericum perforatum L. Furthermore, melatonin concentrations in the leaves of eight species of the Hypericum genus were compared and analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography. Results Melatonin concentration was found to be the highest in its flowers and leaves. The leaves exhibited a rhythmic variation in melatonin concentration of approximately 24 h under both light–dark entrained (Zeitgeber time) and constant light [circadian time (CT)] conditions, with melatonin concentration peaking at approximately CT6 in the middle of the subjective day. Melatonin concentration was influenced significantly by not only photoperiods but also applied light’s wavelength and intensity. It was approximately six times higher under long-day conditions (18-h light:6-h dark) than under short-day photoperiods (10-h light:14-h dark) and was the highest (131 μg/g fresh weight [FW]) under treatment with blue light at an intensity of 45 µmol·m2/s of photons. The melatonin concentration of the two examined Hypericum spp., namely H. kouytchense Lev. and H. coris L., were approximately twice that of H. perforatum L. Conclusion Our findings provide first insights on melatonin-related functions and mechanisms in the circadian system of H. perforatum and useful resources for further melatonin-oriented research and possible applications in agriculture and pharmaceutical industries.
