This paper aims to conduct research on the influence of domestic South Korean politics on relations with the United States and North Korea. In this case, the theory of dominance of domestic political actors explains where the dominance of a group will have an influence on determining the foreign policy of a country. South Korea’s domestic politics is dominated by two groups with different ideologies in the face of the United States and North Korea. This then resulted in different actions in the face of North Korea and the United States. The differences will be explained by assessing some of the policies applied to Kim Dae Jung’s regime and Roh Moo-Hyun from a progressive group. The policy will then be compared to the policies of the regime of Lee Myung Bak from conservative groups. Differences in the group’s dominant views in South Korea have led to certain strategies for each group in the face of the opposition group. The strategy is carried out to maintain the effectiveness of the policies applied according to the ideology of each group. This research used literature study as the method by taking data from journals and reports which that discuss the national politics of South Korea. The theoretical framework of V.M Hudson, which focuses on the national circumstances, and the role of domestic actors have been applied in this research.

The year 2012 was fascinating for domestic politics and international relations in Northeast Asia. Perhaps most notably, every country in the region experienced a change of leadership. China, Russia, North Korea, South Korea, and Japan all saw new leaders begin their tenure. In addition, regional relations took a turn for the worse, with numerous countries engaging in territorial and maritime disputes, disagreeing over interpretations of their shared histories.

The research was an in-depth study concerning the events of Gwangju society’s resistance against the authoritarian Government that occurred in 1980. Problem formulation is “how has Gwangju Democratization Movement in 1980 occurred?”. Researchers conducted historical methods, including collecting writing sources through literature study, critic source, interpretation or source analysis and historiography. The results found that democracy in South Korea was hampered Confucianism ideology which then led South Korea became authoritarian Government. The movement of students and Gwangju’s society were a peaceful act, but military responded back with a violation and the Government manipulate media to cover up an event so it cannot be used as an opportunity for North Korea. Gwangju democratization movement became ‘the gate’ in other regions of South Korea to realize democracy

This paper describes the ineffectiveness of South Koreas confidence-building measures towards North Korea during the reign of Kim Dae Jung and Roh Moo Hyun through the sunshine policy. The previous studies on the sunshine policy only discussed the efforts made by the South Korean government through the sunshine policy and America's influence on the implementation in general. The studies are divided into three major categories namely: domestic politics, political economy, and regional studies, but none has discussed the causes of the ineffectiveness of the sunshine policy. By using confidence-building measures as an analytical framework, this paper will explain the variables in confidence-building measures that cause sunshine policies to be ineffective. The main argument of this paper is that there are 2 factors that cause the sunshine policy to be ineffective, namely the influence of America and the absence of political will from North Korea to achieve the goal of confidence-building measures through sunshine policy.

Subject Domestic politics in South Korea. Significance The unending North Korea crisis risks distracting attention from South Korea, vital in its own right as the world’s eleventh-largest economy and fifth-largest exporter. Politics in Seoul have stabilised after a fraught period leading to the impeachment last year of President Moon Jae-in’s now jailed predecessor, Park Geun-hye, but the country faces a raft of formidable challenges, old and new. Impacts With five separate centre-left parties, a more united political right will probably make gains in local elections in June. North Korea’s participation in the Winter Olympics carries risks and has in part backfired already. Seoul's key foreign relationships -- those with Washington, Pyongyang, Beijing and Tokyo -- will pull Moon in different directions.

South Korea’s management of the COVID-19 outbreak and its economic fallout has been largely effective. The challenges are procurement of vaccinations and addressing rising socio-economic inequalities. In addition, the Moon Jae-in administration has to stabilise domestic politics to achieve greater harmony in a highly polarised society and improve Korea’s relationships with the United States, China, Japan and North Korea, which have been stalled in one way or another. If managed well, Korea will emerge stronger from COVID-19 and consolidate its international status as a high-tech, advanced economy.

Japanese domestic politics grew more volatile and complex in 2017, as LDP electoral reversals were followed by opposition fragmentation and then conservative consolidation. Foreign policy was dominated by the security challenge of North Korea, but also involved deepened relations with the US and Europe, as well as unanticipated improvement with China and South Korea. Macroeconomic trends were positive, but structural reform proceeded only slowly. Japanese society remained slow to change.
