Life imprisonment was introduced to Serbian Criminal legislation with the amendments of Criminal Code from 2019. These amendments replaced the former penalty of imprisonment from 30 to 40 years. Special attention was drawn by the fact that the new legislation allows the possibility of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for committing certain crimes. This legal solution is considered not to be in accordance with the Article 3 of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. Still, the prohibition of parole was introduced to Serbian criminal law in 2013, with the adoption of the Law on the special measures for the prevention of crimes against sexual freedom towards minors. However, at that time the academic community did not give the attention it deserved to the justification of this prohibition, which by itself generates many concerns. That is why, when discussing the problematics of life imprisonment and parole, and its prohibition, one has to bear in mind the previously structured legal frame, as well as the concerns that such a prohibition creates, regardless of whether it not it relates to life imprisonment or timely limited imprisonment.

The aim: based on the features of the notion of “abetting the commission of crimes established in accordance with the Convention” provided for in Part 1 of Art. 9 of the Medicrime Convention, it is necessary to offer an adequate understanding of the notion of “abetting” and define the types of criminal offenses (crimes) that are the “subject” of such abetting. Materials and methods: the research is based on an analysis of the provisions of the Medicrime Convention and the criminal law of Ukraine. The following methods were used: dialectical method; hermeneutic method; systemic-and-structural method; and comparative-legal method. Results: at the legislative level, there is a problem of designating the relevant socio-legal phenomena with adequate concepts and interpretations of these concepts. In the current criminal legislation of Ukraine, there is no definition of the concept of “abetting”, which is used in Part 1 of Art. 9 of the Medicrime Convention. Therefore, in the implementation of the requirements provided for in Part 1 of Art. 9 of the Medicrime Convention, each Party takes the necessary legislative and other measures to recognize abetting in committing any crimes, established under this Convention, as a crime, therefore we should take into account the existence of two alternative ways to explain the meaning of “abetting”: 1) to recognize at the legislative level that “abetting” and “incitement” are synonyms, and therefore the meaning of the term “abetting” can be explained by using the term “inclination”; 2) to recognize at the legislative level that the concept of “abetting” has a meaning different from the concept of “incitement”, and covers not only “inclination”, but also “coercion”, “motivation” and “encouragement”. Conclusions: the main disadvantage of using the concept of “abetting” in the text of the Ukrainian translation of the Medicrime Convention is that without an independent explanation of this concept at the legislative level, its content should be determined depending on the meaning of the term “inciter” under Part 4 of Art. 27 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine), and means inciting a person to commit any of the crimes specified in the Medicrime Convention.

The following Article analyzes recent developments of German law regarding CSR and the protection of human rights in the production sites of foreign subsidiaries and suppliers of German companies. It gives a brief overview on the National Action Plan of the Federal Government, adopted in 2016, analyzes possibilities of a direct enforcement of human rights violations before German courts and gives a survey on some relevant instruments German law uses to promote the respect of human rights by German companies (e.g. CSR transparency and public procurement law). Finally, the current debate on the adoption of a “Supply Chains Act” is briefly assessed. The author argues that the CSR debate in Germany has reached a crossroad with the Federal Government’s initiative for a “Supply Chains Act” since such Act would probably establish a supply chain due diligence and also a delictual liability of German companies for human rights violations caused by a non-compliance with its statutory duties to control its supply chain. However, the outcome of this ongoing debate still is unclear.

The human rights movement has never accepted that human rights belong to the domestic jurisdiction, but the new model of peacekeeping, which to some extent is based on a human rights component, causes severe problems for the movement, particularly because of its selectivity and its often biased implementation. This obstacle to an impartial combat against massive human rights violations and a wide range of other problems make it difficult for the movement to develop a consistent and plausible policy on peacekeeping. Although the international community may have good reasons to deploy soldiers in order to save lives and to bring an end to genocide, a supportive attitude by the human rights movement may jeopardise its principles of impartiality and non-violent campaigning and hence weaken the system of protection of human rights. But it has to be underscored that massive human rights violations will cause a moral dilemma for the movement if it cannot justify its neutral position on compelling grounds.
